Gary Robert Tuck (born September 6,1954) is an American former professional baseball player,coach,and manager. He played one game in Minor League Baseball as a catcher in 1978. He has coached in the minor leagues and in Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees,Florida Marlins,and Boston Red Sox.
Tuck was born in Amsterdam,New York,and graduated from Indiana University. [1] Tuck has 23 years of professional coaching experience. He started his baseball career as a catcher for the Montreal Expos organization and played for them during three minor league seasons. Following his playing retirement,he served as an assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame in 1980,and Arizona State University in 1981.
After winning an NCAA championship with Arizona State,Tuck was hired to coach for the nearby Tucson Toros,a Minor League affiliate of the Houston Astros. Tuck spent eight years in the Astros organization. In 1986,he managed the Double-A Columbus Astros to a league championship, [2] winning Southern League Manager of the Year honors. [3]
By 1989,Tuck was a coach on the New York Yankees Triple-A team,the Columbus Clippers. In 1991,he was the manager of the Watertown Indians,the Single-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, [4] a job he held before switching to a Scout for the Indians from 1992 to 1995.
Tuck rejoined the Yankees in 1996 as the manager of the Single-A Oneonta Yankees,where he spent the next two seasons. [5]
With the Yankees,Tuck served as the bullpen coach for the start of the 1990 season under manager Bucky Dent. Tuck,along with Dent,hitting coach Champ Summers and third base coach Joe Sparks,were all fired by the Yankees on June 7,1990 after an 18-32 start to the season. [6]
Tuck worked with Jorge Posada as a young player,and prepped him to eventually take over for starting catcher Joe Girardi. Posada's workload increased from 60 games in 1997 to 111 and 112 the next two seasons. [7] He eventually took over the starting role in 2000.
Tuck won World Series rings as the team catching instructor in 1998 and 1999. [8] He was not retained following the 1999 season.
Tuck returned to the Yankees prior to the 2003 season and spent the next two years as catching instructor. [8] The team defeated the Red Sox in the 2003 American League Championship Series,and lost to them in the 2004 American League Championship Series. [9]
He spent the 2005 season out of baseball.
In 2006,Joe Girardi was hired as the Marlins manager,and he hired Tuck as his bench coach. [10] He was known for writing the lineup card in calligraphy. [11] Girardi was fired following the season despite winning Manager of the Year.
In November 2006,the Boston Red Sox hired Tuck as their new bullpen coach. [1] [9] He joined pitching coach John Farrell and hitting coach Dave Magadan as new members of the Red Sox coaching staff for the 2007 season. He earned another World Series ring as a member of Boston's 2007 championship team. Tuck also served as an organization-wide catching instructor during spring training. [1] The Red Sox won the 2007 World Series with Tuck on the coaching staff. In his final season,he was noted for clashing with manager Bobby Valentine. [12]
On January 29,2013,he notified the Red Sox that he intended to retire effective immediately,ending his six-year tenure with the team. [13] He spent the 2013 season out of baseball.
Tuck rejoined the Yankees as their bullpen coach during the 2013–14 offseason. [14] The team moved from the ninth best bullpen in 2013,to eighth best under Tuck. [15] [16] Despite the bullpen's success,the Yankees missed the postseason for their second consecutive year. Following the 2015 season,Tuck was let go by the Yankees. [17]

He previously played in MLB for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2009. As a player,Boone is most recognized for his 2003 campaign with the Yankees,during which he hit the winning walk-off home run of the 2003 American League Championship Series.
Jason Andrew Varitek,nicknamed "Tek",is an American professional baseball coach and former catcher. He is the game planning coordinator,a uniformed coaching position,for the Boston Red Sox. After being traded as a minor league prospect by the Seattle Mariners,Varitek played his entire 15-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Red Sox. A three-time All-Star and Gold Glove Award winner at catcher,as well as a Silver Slugger Award winner,Varitek was part of both the 2004 World Series and 2007 World Series Championship teams,and was viewed widely as one of the team's leaders. In December 2004 he was named the captain of the Red Sox,only their fourth captain since 1923. He was a switch-hitter.
Darrell Dean Johnson was an American Major League Baseball catcher,coach,manager and scout. As a manager,he led the 1975 Boston Red Sox to the American League pennant,and was named "Manager of the Year" by both The Sporting News and the Associated Press.
Jorge Rafael Posada Villeta is a Puerto Rican former professional baseball catcher who played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees. Posada recorded a .273 batting average,275 home runs,and 1,065 runs batted in (RBIs) during his career. A switch hitter,Posada was a five-time All-Star,won five Silver Slugger Awards,and was on the roster for four World Series championship teams.
William Grady Little is an American former manager in Major League Baseball,currently working in the front office of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He managed the Boston Red Sox from 2002 to 2003 and the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2006 to 2007. He was inducted into the Kinston,North Carolina,Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001,Charlotte Baseball Hall of Fame 1985 and was inducted into the Hagerstown Suns Hall of Fame on April 13,2009.
The Auburn Doubledays are a collegiate summer baseball team of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) that is located in Auburn,New York. From 1958 to 2020,they were members of Minor League Baseball's New York–Penn League (NYPL). They have played their home games at Leo Pinckney Field at Falcon Park since 1995. They previously played at the original Falcon Park,which was built in 1927 on the same site. The team is owned and operated by Auburn Community Baseball.
Joseph Elliott Girardi is an American sports broadcaster and former professional baseball player and manager in Major League Baseball (MLB). Girardi played the catcher position for the Chicago Cubs,Colorado Rockies,New York Yankees,and St. Louis Cardinals during a big league playing career that spanned from 1989 to 2003. He won three World Series championships with the Yankees in the 1990s and served as the catcher for both Dwight Gooden's no-hitter and David Cone's perfect game.
Kevin Forrest Cash is an American professional baseball manager and former player who is the manager of the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball (MLB). Previously,Cash played catcher in MLB for the Toronto Blue Jays,Tampa Bay Devil Rays,Boston Red Sox,New York Yankees,and Houston Astros. As a player,Cash was listed at 6 feet 0 inches (1.83 m) and 200 pounds (91 kg);he batted and threw right-handed. He was the bullpen coach for the Cleveland Indians before being hired as the Rays' manager in December 2014. Cash was the American League Manager of the Year in 2020 and 2021,the first AL manager to win the award consecutively. He entered the 2024 season as the longest-tenured manager in MLB.
Joshua David Bard is an American former professional baseball catcher. He is the bullpen coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played in MLB as a catcher for the Cleveland Indians,Boston Red Sox,San Diego Padres,Washington Nationals and Seattle Mariners from 2002 to 2011. Bard was a switch-hitter who threw right-handed during his playing career.

The 2009 New York Yankees season was the 107th season for the New York Yankees franchise. The Yankees opened their new Yankee Stadium on April 3,2009,when they hosted an exhibition game against the Chicago Cubs. The new stadium hosted its first regular season game on April 16,when the team played against the Cleveland Indians and their first playoff game against the Minnesota Twins in the ALDS on October 7,2009. The Yankees swept the Twins in three games to win the divisional series. They won their 40th American League pennant on October 25,defeating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 6 games to advance to the World Series,where they defeated the defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies in six games to win their 27th World Series title on November 4. The Yankees finished the regular season with 103 wins and 59 losses,the best record in the majors.
The 2011 New York Yankees season was the 109th season for the New York Yankees franchise. The Yankees began the season at home against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday,March 31. The Yankees clinched a playoff berth in the first game of a doubleheader on September 21,and clinched the American League East title in the second game. The Yankees season ended on October 6 when they lost a deciding Game 5 of the 2011 American League Division Series to the Detroit Tigers 3–2. It was the first time since 2007 that the Yankees lost an elimination game at home.
Antonio Francisco Peña Padilla is a Dominican former professional baseball player,manager and coach. He played as a catcher in Major League Baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates,St. Louis Cardinals,Boston Red Sox,Cleveland Indians,Chicago White Sox,and Houston Astros. After his playing career,Peña was the manager of the Kansas City Royals between 2002 and 2005. He was most recently the first base coach for the New York Yankees. A four-time Gold Glove Award winner,Peña was known for his defensive abilities as well as his unorthodox squat behind home plate.
