Gateway Communications, also known as Gateway Carrier Services was a telecommunication business division . It was acquired by PCCW Global, a division of HKT Limited in 2012. HKT Limited itself was a subsidiary of PCCW. Gateway Global Communications owns one of the largest pan-African telecommunications networks, supplying Africa's foremost mobile operators and ISPs.[ citation needed ]

History

Gateway Communications provided satellite cellular backhaul; international and regional voice and mobile broadband solutions to Africa. They sold voice and data services to enterprises in 40 countries in sub Saharan Africa.[ citation needed ] Gateway Communications use satellite, sub sea cable (including SEACOM), wireless and fibre connectivity.[ citation needed ]

Gateway Communications was the first company to invest in SEACOM, which is bringing 1.28 Tbit/s of capacity to the continent.[ citation needed ]

In 2007, Gateway Communications used Comtech EF Data's CDM-Qx Satellite Modem for their transponder services. [3] Gateway received an award that known as "Excellence in Innovative Cellular Backhaul Services", from Intelsat in 2008. [4]

Gateway[ sic ] was bought by Vodacom in August 2008 for US$700 million. [5] Vodafone became the indirect parent company of Gateway Communications in December 2008, after Vodafone increased its shares in Vodacom from 50% to 65%. [6]

In August 2008, Gateway established a regional office for Central Africa in Cameroon. [7]

After the takeover, Vodacom spin off Gateway Communications' business services division, [8] Gateway Business Africa. In 2009, it was announced that the business services division would be merged with Vodacom Business. [8]

In 2010, Gateway Communications was expanded into Guinea and Senegal. [9]

In June 2012 Vodacom sold the division Gateway Carrier Services[ sic ], including several subsidiaries that named after Gateway Communications, [10] [11] to PCCW Global for a fee of US$26 million [10] [12] [13] (HK$268 million). [11] PCCW Global was the international business division of Hong Kong Telecom (HKT), a Hong Kong telecoms provider.

In the same year, the assets were transferred to Gateway Global Communications which is now operating as a carrier services company, wholly owned by PCCW Global.[ citation needed ] Gateway Global Communications was formerly known as PCCW Global (UK) Limited. [14]

Gateway Business Africa (GBA) provides pan-African data hosting services and telecommunications services in 42 sub-Saharan countries and employs 350 people in Africa.
It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the South Africa mobile phone company Vodacom, Gateway Business is the brand name of Vodacom Business Africa, the statutory entity under which it operates. They have offices in Angola, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, France and the UK.

Phase 3 Telecom is an aerial fiber-optic network infrastructure provider, providing connectivity, network management, and data storage services to wholesale, enterprise, and retail customers across West Africa. The company was incorporated in 2003 and is headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria. Licensed by the Nigerian Communications Commission in 2006 - the company in 2014, 2018, and 2022, added more kilometers to its existing coverage area with footprint expansion of its backbone, enterprise network, and broadband services. Phase operates 6,000 kilometres (3,700 mi) and counting open-access aerial fiber-optic network. The company, for over two decades has been vital to growth in Africa's growing ICT market, implementing the Wire Nigeria Project—conceived by the Nigerian Communications Commission to help provide broadband communications access to rural communities. Phase 3 has a broad range of wholesale and enterprise clients including Glo, MTN, 9Mobile, Ntel, Airtel, Smile Communications, World Bank, Julius Berger, Unity Bank, etc. Some of the African countries where the company currently has partner operations include Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and the Republic of Niger.

The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) was formed in 2016 as an engineering-focused, collaborative methodology for building and deploying global telecom network infrastructure, with the goal of enabling global access for all.
