Gaza was an American metalcore band from Salt Lake City, Utah.
Formed in 2004, they were signed to Black Market Activities and released one extended play and three full-length albums. They are known for their complex and heavy sound, as well as their outspoken anti-religious and political views. [4] [5]
The band formed in Salt Lake City intending to be an indie rock band but, according to frontman Jon Parkin, that "lasted about half a practice". [4] According to Parkin, the band was named after "perhaps the most obvious example of religious turmoil," and he said "we don’t affiliate ourselves with either side of the conflict." [4]
The original lineup consisted of Casey Hansen on drums, Parkin on bass, and Michael Mason and Luke Sorenson on guitars. With this lineup they played their first two shows with different vocalists – first with Dustin Dransfield and then with Dreu Hudson. After their departure, Parkin switched to lead vocals, and bass player Matt Nanes was added. [6] With this lineup, the band recorded their debut EP East in 2004, which was distributed by Exigent Records. [7]
Nanes left the band after the EP release, and Chris Clement joined as bass player.
In 2006, the band signed to label Black Market Activities, on which they have released I Don't Care Where I Go When I Die .
Clement was unable to tour and turned bassist role fully over to Bird Eater band mate Anthony Lucero, who retained the spot for the duration of the project. Gaza’s new permanent lineup recorded He Is Never Coming Back . After the release of He Is Never Coming Back, Sorenson left the band, leaving them as a four-piece group. The final lineup recorded No Absolutes in Human Suffering . [8]
In late 2012, an unnamed woman alleged that a member of Gaza had raped her, later identifying the member as vocalist Jon Parkin. In January 2013, the band posted a statement denying the allegations and the matter was later resolved by the two parties. [9] Despite resolving the issue, the band later announced that it would be breaking up, with the other members citing tension between them and Parkin. [10] Bassist Anthony Lucero stated:
It started to become really frustrating, and tours were getting cancelled, and all kinds of stuff was happening, so when that stupid, horrible shit blew up on the Internet, then it had reached the point where the three of us said that we'd had enough of this, it's done, and so we decided to actually kick Jon [Parkin] out of the band. Then we sat with Gaza for a while, trying to figure out what we were going to do, and eventually it felt like the only right thing to do was just start from scratch. [11]
In May 2013, Michael Mason, Casey Hansen and Anthony Lucero started a new band called Cult Leader. [12]

Blue Öyster Cult is an American rock band formed on Long Island in Stony Brook, New York, in 1967. The band has sold 25 million records worldwide, including 7 million in the United States. The band's fusion of hard rock with psychedelia, and penchant for occult, fantastical and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, had a major influence on heavy metal music. They developed a cult following and, while achieving mainstream hits like "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" (1976) and "Burnin' for You" (1981), their commercial success was limited. Both songs, and others such as "Godzilla" (1977), remain classic rock radio staples. The band were early adopters of the music video format, and their videos received heavy rotation on MTV in its early period.
Melvins are an American rock band formed in 1983 in Montesano, Washington. Their early work was key to the development of both grunge and sludge metal. Primarily a trio, they have also performed as a quartet, with either two drummers or two bassists. Since 1984, vocalist and guitarist Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover have been constant members.
Guided by Voices (GBV) is an American indie rock band formed in 1983 in Dayton, Ohio. It has made frequent personnel changes but always maintained the presence of principal songwriter Robert Pollard. The most well-known lineup of the band consisted of Pollard, his brother Jim, Mitch Mitchell, Tobin Sprout, Kevin Fennell (drums), and bassist Greg Demos. Noted at first for its lo-fi aesthetic and Portastudio four-tracks-to-cassette production methods, Guided by Voices' music was influenced by early post–British Invasion garage rock, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, punk rock and post-punk. The Chariot was an American hardcore punk band from Douglasville, Georgia, that existed from 2003 to 2013. The last lineup consisted of drummer David Kennedy, vocalist and bandleader Josh Scogin, and guitarists Brandon Henderson and Stephen Harrison. The band experienced frequent lineup changes since its inception, with Scogin being the only original member. The band played an abrasive style of metalcore that did not adhere to typical stylings popular among their contemporaries such as melodic/abrasive dynamics and harmonic vocals. Nothing for Us Here is the debut EP by the American rock band Cult Leader. The EP was released on April 15, 2014 through Deathwish Inc. Cult Leader created Nothing for Us Here in about a week and were planning on self-releasing it. After sending a copy to their friend Jacob Bannon of Converge to see what he thought of it, Bannon suggested releasing the EP through his own label, Deathwish. The title of the EP has a few different meanings for Cult Leader. Vocalist Anthony Lucero said one meaning is about the end of his previous band Gaza and how "everything we worked for was just falling apart," and it's also a reference to "the breath of the death: the moment when there's no more life left in you and you have to face oblivion." Lucero also created the album's artwork.
Useless Animal is an extended play by the American rock band Cult Leader. Released through Deathwish Inc. on June 16, 2015, the EP features two exclusive tracks and one original composition titled "Gutter Gods" that would later be released on the band's 2015 debut album, Lightless Walk. Useless Animal was recorded in late 2014 by Andy Patterson, who previously recorded Gaza's 2009 album, He Is Never Coming Back—the now-defunct band that featured three members and gave birth to Cult Leader.
