Useless Animal is an extended play by the American metalcore band Cult Leader. Released through Deathwish Inc. on June 16, 2015, [2] the EP features two exclusive tracks (the original composition "Useless Animal," and the cover song "You Are Not My Blood") and one original composition titled "Gutter Gods" that would later be released on the band's 2015 debut album, Lightless Walk . [3] Useless Animal was recorded in late 2014 by Andy Patterson, [2] who previously recorded Gaza's 2009 album, He Is Never Coming Back [4] —the now-defunct band that featured three members and gave birth to Cult Leader.

Critical reception

Music critics noted the first two tracks, "Useless Animal" and "Gutter Gods," sounded both familiar and exemplary of Cult Leader's signature sound. Writing for Exclaim , Denise Falzon gave the EP a nine-out-of-ten and called these two tracks: "raw, chaotic attacks of heavy, grinding noise filled with furious, tormented aggression." [5] Writing for SLUG Magazine , Megan Kennedy praised the EP and said these two tracks, "are short tracks, like brutal slashes with rusty blades, but there is so much energy and atmosphere in their frantic, ugly rhythms." [6] Many critics highly praised the EP's B-side "You Are Not My Blood," a cover song originally by the indie/folk collaboration between Mark Kozelek and Desertshore from their eponymous 2013 album, Mark Kozelek & Desertshore . Cult Leader was joined on the cover song by Kim Pack and Sarah Pendleton of the fellow Salt Late City-based doom/sludge metal band SubRosa, who Falzon called "superbly talented." [5] She elaborated that the track, "pairs surprisingly well with the jarring, distorted hostility of the first two numbers, and takes Useless Animal to another level entirely. [5] Kennedy called the song "the stand-out track" of the EP, described Anthony Lucero's singing vocals as "an enjoyable surprise" and said the additional Subrosa members helped Cult Leader "showcase their range with this deep, brooding dirge." [6] Michael Nelson of Stereogum described the song as, "a dirge-y, doom-y thing that pretty seamlessly combines both Cult Leader and SubRosa's sounds, actually—and pays fitting homage to Kozelek's sound, too." [7]

Nothing for Us Here is the debut EP by the American rock band Cult Leader. The EP was released on April 15, 2014 through Deathwish Inc. Cult Leader created Nothing for Us Here in about a week and were planning on self-releasing it. After sending a copy to their friend Jacob Bannon of Converge to see what he thought of it, Bannon suggested releasing the EP through his own label, Deathwish. The title of the EP has a few different meanings for Cult Leader. Vocalist Anthony Lucero said one meaning is about the end of his previous band Gaza and how "everything we worked for was just falling apart," and it's also a reference to "the breath of the death: the moment when there's no more life left in you and you have to face oblivion." Lucero also created the album's artwork.

Lightless Walk is the debut studio album by American metalcore band Cult Leader. The album was released on October 16, 2015 through Deathwish Inc. and produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge. The track "Gutter Gods" previously appeared on Cult Leader's 2015 EP Useless Animal.

Oathbreaker is a Belgian band from Flanders, formed in 2008 and currently signed to Deathwish Inc. The band consists of guitarists Lennart Bossu and Gilles Demolder, drummer Wim Coppers, and vocalist Caro Tanghe who performs both screamed and sung vocals. They are a part of Church of Ra, an artistic collective started by Amenra, a band of which Lennart and Caro are also members. Like Amenra, Oathbreaker emerged from the Belgian underground hardcore punk scene but integrated extreme metal and art music aesthetics.
