Gel is an American hardcore punk band from New Jersey. Formed in 2018 as a side project of powerviolence band Sick Shit, Gel has released one full-length album, two EPs, one demo, and one split mini album. An article by NME credited them for "shaping the sound of hardcore in 2023". [1]

History

Gel has its origins in New Jersey powerviolence band Sick Shit, which was founded by guitarist Bobko and drummer Zach Miller. Sami Kaiser joined soon after. When Sick Shit's bassist departed from the group, the role was filled by Anthony Webster, who soon after switched to guitar. This lineup of Sick Shit began Gel in 2018 as a side project in order to pursue a more traditional hardcore punk style. [2] [3] Gel released their debut self-titled EP in 2019. [4] That same year, the band released a tape called HC For The Freaks. [4] The band released their second EP in 2021 titled Violent Closure. [4] Gel also released a standalone single in 2021 called "Mental Static". [5] In 2022, Gel released a split, Shock Therapy, with the band Cold Brats. [6] The band's debut album, Only Constant , was released on March 31, 2023. [7] [8] The album received positive reviews. [9] [10]

Musical style

Gel play a style of traditional, fast hardcore punk. [1] [11] Their music sometimes makes use of elements of post-punk [12] and D-beat. [11] Unlike the predominant style in hardcore during the 2010s and 2020s, Gel's music leans heavily on the genre's punk rock roots. [10] Revolver magazine called their "fast, noisy and uncompromisingly energetic" style as "filling the void that's been empty in the broader hardcore landscape since the early days of Trash Talk". [13]

Extortion is an Australian hardcore punk band from Perth, Western Australia. Formed in 2005, they are active in the Australian hardcore scene. They are heavily influenced by powerviolence bands such as Siege, Negative FX, No Comment and Infest however the band considers themselves a Hardcore band with a Powerviolence influence.

Beatdown hardcore is a subgenre of hardcore punk with prominent elements of heavy metal. Beatdown hardcore features aggressive vocals, gang vocals, heavy guitar riffs and breakdowns and lyrics discussing unity, brotherhood, volatile interpersonal relationships and machismo. The genre has its origins in late 1980s New York hardcore bands such as Breakdown, Killing Time and Madball, and was pioneered in the mid-1990s by bands like Bulldoze, Terror Zone and Neglect. The definition of the genre has expanded over time to incorporate artists increasingly indebted to metal, notably Xibalba, Sunami and Knocked Loose.

Vein.fm is an American metalcore band from Boston that formed in 2013. They are known for their frequent tours and have performed shows with groups such as Code Orange and Twitching Tongues while in Europe. In 2017 the band was signed onto Closed Casket Activities, who would issue their first full-length work Errorzone to positive reception among critics, even appearing on Revolver's early "Best Albums of 2018" list. The album also managed to peak at number 21 on Billboard's Hard Rock album chart. In July 2020, after the release of their remix album, the band announced it changed its name to Vein.fm.

Sunami is an American hardcore punk band formed in San Jose, California in 2019. Originally intended as a short-lived joke band by members of various San Francisco Bay Area hardcore bands, Sunami sought to parody the ignorant style of many hardcore bands on their 2019 demo Demonstration. However, after gaining notoriety for their violent debut live performance, the band continued past their planned time frame. They have since released three EPs, with their debut self-titled album being released on June 14, 2023. A 2023 article by Revolver credited them as "in the upper echelon of bands dominating the hardcore zeitgeist".

Gulch was an American hardcore punk band formed in Santa Cruz, California in 2016. The band released only one studio album Impenetrable Cerebral Fortress (2020), as well as two EPs and one demo tape. They performed their final live performance on July 31, 2022, at the peak of their popularity. The New York Times credited them as one of the driving forces of American hardcore's "Rennaissance" in the 2020s.

Beginning without a set musical style, the 2015 hiring of vocalist Sammy Ciaramitaro and bassist-turned-guitarist Cody Chavez led the band to embrace a crossover thrash sound. They have released two demos, three EPs and two full length albums. The New York Times credited them as a driving force of American hardcore's "renaissance" in the early 2020s.
