Germany competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, winning once again the most total medals of any nation. The National Olympic Committee of Germany nominated a total of 162 (164) athletes to compete, as the 5th largest team, in all 15 of the Winter Olympic sports.
For the swimming competitions at the 2008 Olympics the following qualification systems were in place.

Farida Hisham Osman is an Egyptian competitive swimmer who specializes in butterfly and freestyle events. She is an All-Africa Games gold medalist and Egyptian national champion and record-holder. Osman is the fastest female swimmer in Egypt and Africa, she is currently coached by Teri McKeever. Osman holds the senior national records for all the butterfly, freestyle and backstroke events, as well as African records in the 50m and 100m butterfly.
The diving competitions at the 2012 Olympic Games in London took place from 29 July to 11 August at the Aquatics Centre within the Olympic Park. It was one of four aquatic sports at the Games, along with swimming, water polo and synchronised swimming.
Silvia Fröhlich is a German rower who won a gold medal in the coxed fours at the 1980 Summer Olympics. She also won two gold and three silver medals at the world championships of 1978–1983, most of them with Marita Sandig. After retiring from competitions, she worked as a dentist.

Patrick Follmann is a German sailor, who specialized in two-person dinghy (470) class. He represented Germany, along with his partner Ferdinand Gerz, at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and has also been training throughout most of his sporting career at Deutscher Touring Yacht Club in Tutzing. He also obtained a career best result with a single victory for the German squad in the men's 470 class at the 2012 Kiel Week Tournament in Kiel. As of September 2014, Follmann is ranked no. 147 in the world for two-person dinghy class by the International Sailing Federation.

It was the nation's eighteenth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympic Games, except for 1920 and 1924 due to the nation's role in World War I, and 1948 for the nation's role in World War II. From 1956 through 1964, Germans competed as part of the United Team of Germany (UTG); in 1968, the team was split into two teams West Germany and East Germany. West Germany boycotted the 1980 games as part of the American-led boycott, and then returned in 1984. East Germany boycotted the 1984 games as part of the Soviet-led boycott, and in 1988, East Germany returned for the last time. One year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, West and East Germany re-united as one country with their reunification in 1990, and it has participated in every Summer Olympics since 1992 games in Barcelona.
