Germany

Germany and Somaliland do not have formal diplomatic relations but have maintained informal contact. Germany recognizes the region of Somaliland as part of Somalia.

History

In 2002, Germany considered recognising Somaliland and establishing a military base in the country. They did not do so and the naval base was instead established in Djibouti. [1] [2] [3] German naval ships already operated from Berbera. [1] In September 2012, at the mini-summit on Somalia on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, the German government re-affirmed its continued support for Somalia's government, territorial integrity and sovereignty. [4] In 2019, the German ambassador to Kenya and Somalia visited Hargeisa and met with Muse Bihi Abdi. [5]

The Embassy of the United States of America to Somalia is a diplomatic mission of the United States in Mogadishu, Somalia from 1960 to 1991. In 1957, the US opened a consulate-general in Mogadishu—the capital of the Trust Territory of Somalia, a UN trusteeship under Italian administration. The consulate was upgraded to embassy status in July 1960, when the US recognized Somalia's independence and appointed an ambassador. The embassy served to counter Soviet influence during the Cold War and also served as a base for the United States Agency for International Development, which had a large presence in the country. In 1989, the embassy moved from a dilapidated building in central Mogadishu to a new compound on the outskirts of the city.

The Embassy of the United Kingdom in Mogadishu is the diplomatic mission of the United Kingdom in Somalia. It was led by Ambassador Ben Fender. Kate Foster became the ambassador based in Mogadishu but there were no consular services.

Somaliland and the United States do not have official diplomatic relations. While Somaliland operates a representative liaison office in Washington, D.C., it does not have formal diplomatic status under the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Both countries do maintain contact as delegations from both sides have met in the past.

Somaliland–United Arab Emirates relations refers to the relationship between the Republic of Somaliland and the United Arab Emirates. Somaliland maintains a representative (liaison) offices in the United Arab Emirates and the United Arab Emirates also maintains a representative office in Hargeisa. On 13 March 2021, Abdulla Al-Naqbi was appointed as UAE ambassador to Somaliland.
