Gerry De La Cruz is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s. De La Cruz played for Canberra in the NSWRL competition. De La Cruz was a foundation player for Canberra playing in the club's first ever game.

Background

De La Cruz was born in Innisfail, Queensland to a mother of Aboriginal and Sri Lankan heritage and father of Torres Strait Islander and Filipino heritage. De La Cruz spent his early life in Darwin, Northern Territory. He was the first person of Filipino ancestry to play first grade rugby league in Australia. [2]

Playing career

De La Cruz played in Canberra's first ever game which was in Round 1 1982 against South Sydney at Redfern Oval. The match finished in a 37–7 loss with De La Cruz scoring the club's first ever try described by one Sydney paper as 'a bewildering try'. [3] De La Cruz only played four senior games for the Canberra side with injury cutting short his career. In the first season he broke his arm in a tackle against Parramatta and utility Paul Taylor, but not before he scored that groundbreaking try. A few years later, Canberra stalwart Don Furner, his former coach, paid de la Cruz the ultimate compliment. ‘If you did not break your arm you could have been anything in rugby league’. [4] Canberra went on to finish last in their inaugural season winning only a total of 4 matches. As of 2020, this is the last time Canberra have finished last. [5] [6]

The 1989 NSWRL season was the 82nd season of professional rugby league football in Australia. Sixteen clubs competed for the New South Wales Rugby League's J.J. The 2019 NRL Grand Final was the conclusive and premiership-deciding game of the 2019 National Rugby League season and was played at Sydney's ANZ Stadium. The match was contested between defending premiers the Sydney Roosters and the Canberra Raiders. The match was won by the Sydney Roosters 14–8 in a tight contest to claim their 15th premiership title, making them the first club in 26 years to win consecutive premierships in a unified competition since the Brisbane Broncos in 1993, and the first Sydney Roosters side to win consecutive titles since 1975. The Clive Churchill Medal was awarded to Raiders five-eighth Jack Wighton as the game's man of the match.

Scott Gale (1965-2004) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. Nicknamed "Mr Midnight" he played for the Western Suburbs, Eastern Suburbs, Balmain, North Sydney and the Canberra Raiders in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition and Hull F.C. in England. His sister Tarsha Gale was the first captain of NSW in Women's Rugby League.

Paul Elliott is an Australia former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s. He played for Illawarra and Canberra in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition.
