Gestalten is an independent publishing house based in Berlin, Germany. [1]
Gestalten was established by three friends: Robert Klanten, Markus Hollmann-Loges and Andreas Peyerl, who all moved to Berlin in the early 1990s. [2] They rapidly came into contact with the Berlin techno and rave scene, initially designing flyers, posters and record covers for music labels and events such as the Love Parade. In 1994, they conceived a book about techno-art, documenting the visual aspects of technoculture. [3]
In order to gauge the market interest, they started to produce order cards, to be distributed through techno magazines. They received over 1000 orders, through which they were able to obtain a loan, which facilitated the production and release of their first book, The Localizer 1.0. This led to the foundation of Die Gestalten publishing house in 1995. The name was later changed to gestalten. [2] The word means to shape, or to create in German.
Gestalten has been led solely by Robert Klanten since the departure of his co-founders Markus Hollmann-Loges and Andreas Peyerl in 2008. The company remains independent, with investor MairDumont and Klanten holding 50% of the shares each. [4]
Gestalten's focus shifted away from music towards books showcasing graphic design in 1998. [2] The following years continued this trend, with the majority of books covering design and art themes as well as publishing books about architecture, food culture, travel, motorbikes and bicycles. Since its conception, the publishing house has focused on the international market, publishing in English for a global audience. [5]
Gestalten has partnered with niche organizations such as outdoor brand Parks Project, [6] architecture website ArchDaily, [7] and lifestyle magazine Kinfolk. [8] The company has also collaborated with global brands including Marvel [9] and Monocle, [10] as well as leading creatives such as Stuart Humphryes [11] and Dieter Rams. [12]
Berghain is a nightclub in Berlin, Germany. It is named after its location near the border between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain in Berlin, and is a short walk from Berlin Ostbahnhof main line railway station. Sergei Sviatchenko is a Danish-Ukrainian architect, artist, photographer and curator. He is a representative of the Ukrainian New Wave, that arose in Ukraine up through the 1980s. Initiator and creative director of the Less Festival of Collage, Viborg and Just A Few Works. He has lived in Denmark since the 1990s. Sviatchenko graduated from Kharkov National University of Construction and Architecture in 1975, and in 1986 he studied a Ph.D. at the National Academy of Visual Arts and Architecture. Sviatchenko is the son of architect Evgenij Sviatchenko (1924–2004), who was professor of architecture and a member of the National Ukrainian Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, and engineer Ninel Sviatchenko (1926–2000). In 1975 Sergei Sviatchenko completed his architectural studies at Kharkov National University of Construction and Architecture. Sergei Sviatchenko is especially oriented towards architecture's modern expressions, among these are Constructivism and the contemporary European Bauhaus movement. From his teacher, Professor Viktor Antonov, Sviatchenko was introduced to the film director Andrei Tarkovsky, and particularly his film Mirror from 1975 has left a thematic footprint in Sviatchenko's more recent collage art. After having worked as an architect for a number of architectural firms in Kharkov until 1983, Sviatchenko moved to Kyiv, where he successfully graduated the master's program at Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture|Kiev National University of Construction and Architecture, having completed his Ph.D. dissertation "Means to Visual Information in Architecture". In the 1980s he was one of the founders of the Soviart Center for Contemporary Art (Soviart) in Kiev and co-organizer and curator of the first Ukrainian exhibitions of contemporary art "Kiev-Tallinn" at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute|Kiev Polytechnic Institute(1987), "Kiev-Kaunas" (1988), the first joint exhibition by Soviet and American artists (1988) and curated the first Ukrainian exhibitions in Denmark: "21 perceptions. Young Contemporary Ukrainian Artists" (1989), "Ukrainian Art 1960–80" (1990), "7 + 7" which was the first joint exhibition by Soviet and Danish artists (1990) and "Flash. A New Generation of Ukrainian Art" (1990). At the end of 1990 Sviatchenko moved to Denmark with his wife Helena Sviatchenko having been awarded an art scholarship. In the same year he began to participate in solo and group exhibitions.
Joachim Sauter was a German media artist, designer and technology entrepreneur. He was appointed Professor for New Media Art and Design at the Universität der Künste Berlin, UdK in 1991, and in 1993 he created Terravision, before pursuing a lawsuit against Google for infringing the patent. He became an adjunct professor at UCLA, Los Angeles in 2001.

Jakob Tigges is a German architect and academic "who became known through a series of artistic and provocative urban design proposals". In 2009, Tigges proposed construction of the world's largest artificial mountain, The Berg, at the site of Berlin's former Berlin Tempelhof Airport. In 2010, Tigges designed a Chicago project, ChicagoSkyScrapesBack. In 2011, his office Mila won a competition for the new exhibition of architecture at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin and Museum of Asian Art. for a proposal that displays exhibited objects hovering through the city castle’s rooms in subtle opposition to the static nature of the reconstructed architecture all around. Tigges' work overcomes the disciplinary boundaries between art, architecture and communication and have been awarded with prestigious prizes within different disciplines.
Michael Young is a British industrial designer and creative director based in Hong Kong. He works in the areas of product, furniture and interior design with studios in Hong Kong and Brussels. He is known for unconventional use of materials and manufacturing processes, and collaborations with brands such as Brionvega, Cappellini, KEF, La Manufacture, and MOKE International. He is interested in "how disruption in society always has a design response, because it usually creates a need for things that perform."
Sergei Tchoban is a German Architect and artist working in various cities in Europe. He is managing director of the architectural firm TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten and founder of the Tchoban Foundation, which has been based in the Museum for Architectural Drawing in Berlin, built for this purpose, since 2013. He is a member of the Association of German Architects (BDA) and the architectural associations in Hamburg and Berlin. Tchoban is the recipient of architectural awards and a participant in various architectural exhibitions.
