Gholamreza Aavani (born 1943) is an Iranian philosopher and emeritus professor of philosophy at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran. [1] A former head of the Institute for Research in Philosophy, Aavani is a member of the Academy of Sciences of Iran and a steering committee Member of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies. [2] [3] [4] [5] He has also served as the Kenan Rifai Distinguished Professor of Islamic Studies at Beijing University, China, and is currently a research fellow at Al-Mahdi Institute.

Biography

Born in 1943 in Semnan in Iran, Aavani graduated with a BA in philosophy in 1964 from the American University in Beirut. He received a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Tehran in 1968 and acquired his PhD in 1976 from the same university under the supervision of Seyyed Hossein Nasr. [6] Aavani has the greatest influence on expediting the process of development and expansion of Iranian philosophy. He had been the head of the Institute for Research in Philosophy from the early 1980s until his removal from the office in 2011. He is also a steering committee member of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies and the first president of the International Association of Islamic Philosophy.

Suhrawardi provided a new Platonic critique of the peripatetic school of Avicenna that was dominant at his times, and that critique involved the fields of Logic, Physics, Epistemology, Psychology, and Metaphysics.

Abdolkarim SoroushPersian pronunciation:[æbdolkæriːmsoruːʃ]), born Hossein Haj Faraj Dabbagh, is an Iranian Islamic thinker, reformer, Rumi scholar, public intellectual, and a former professor of philosophy at the University of Tehran and Imam Khomeini International University. He is among the most influential figures in the religious intellectual movement of Iran. Soroush is currently a visiting scholar at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland. He was also affiliated with other institutions, including Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, the Leiden-based International Institute as a visiting professor for the Study of Islam in the Modern World (ISIM) and the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin. He was named by Time magazine as one of the world's 100 most influential people in 2005, and by Prospect magazine as one of the most influential intellectuals in the world in 2008. Iranian philosophy or Persian philosophy can be traced back as far as to Old Iranian philosophical traditions and thoughts which originated in ancient Indo-Iranian roots and were considerably influenced by Zarathustra's teachings. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy, the chronology of the subject and science of philosophy starts with the Indo-Iranians, dating this event to 1500 BC. Illuminationism, also known as Ishrāqiyyun or simply Ishrāqi is a philosophical and mystical school of thought introduced by Shahab al-Din Suhrawardi in the twelfth century, established with his Kitab Hikmat al-Ishraq, a fundamental text finished in 1186. Written with influence from Avicennism, Peripateticism, and Neoplatonism, the philosophy is nevertheless distinct as a novel and holistic addition to the history of Islamic philosophy.

Toshio Kuroda was Professor Emeritus of the International University of Japan of Islamic studies and translated many Islamic texts into Japanese. He was part of a group of academics invited to research Islamic topics at the Imperial Iranian Academy of Philosophy in Tehran in 1974. There he studied and researched under the guidance of Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Toshihiko Izutsu and Henry Corbin.
