Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury is a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member from Chittagong-6 and Chittagong-7 constituencies. [1]

Career

Chowdhury's candidacy in the 2008 election was cancelled by the returning officer of Bangladesh Election Commission as a court order that cleared him a loan defaulting case did not reach the commissions office before the deadline. [2]

In November 2009, Chowdhury's residence was attacked allegedly by Awami League activists. [3]

On 20 May 2010, Chowdhury collected nominations papers to contest the Chittagong City Corporation mayoral elections. [4] In September 2010, an arrest warrant was issued against him and his brother, Saifuddin Quader Chowdhury, on a bad check case. [5]

Two of Chowdhury's followers were lynched by a mob when they were fleeing after shooting a local Jubo League leader on 24 October 2013. [6]

Chowdhury is a vice chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party as of August 2016. [7] [8] He is the former president of the Chittagong District (north) unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. [9] He is a director of QC Container Line Ltd and QC Shipping Ltd, both of which are family-owned companies. [10] He is also a director of Dacca Dyeing. [11]

On 3 June 2018, Chowdhury secured bail in two cases, one over threatening Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and another over vandalizing cars, from the High Court Division. [12]

On 30 October 2019, Chowdhury was sentenced to three years imprisonment for making derogatory comments about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. [13] He went on the run after securing a bail from the High Court Division. [13]

Personal life

Chowdhury's father, Fazlul Quader Chowdhury, was the speaker of the parliament of Pakistan. [14] His brother, Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, was a former member of parliament and convicted war criminal. [15] [16] He has three other brothers, and Salman F. Rahman is his cousin. [10]

The 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis began as a caretaker government (CTG) assumed power at the end of October 2006 following the end of term of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party administration. The BNP government increased the chief justice's retirement age in an unconstitutional way to bias the appointment of the head of the caretaker government. CTG manages the government during the interim 90-day period and parliamentary elections. Political conflict began with the alleged appointment of a Chief Advisor, a role which devolved to the President, Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed. The interim period was marked from the beginning by violent protests initiated by the Awami League named Logi Boitha Andolan, with 40 people killed and hundreds injured in the first month. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party had its own complaints about the process and the opposition.

Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi politician, minister and six-term member of Jatiya Sangsad and member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee, who served as the adviser of parliamentary affairs to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in from 2001 to 2006. On 1 October 2013 he was convicted of 9 of 23 charges and sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh for crimes during the 1971 Bangladesh War of Independence. However, limitations placed on his defense testimony were called "disturbing" and the trial called politically motivated.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is an ongoing tribunal in Bangladesh that aims to investigate and administer justice regarding the war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and crimes against peace committed by Pakistan army and their local collaborators Razakar, Al-Badr, Al-Shams during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. In 2008's public election, one of the principal electoral manifestos of the Awami League was to initiate the trial process of war criminals. As promised, a member of parliament from Awami League submitted the proposal of the trial of war criminals on 29 January 2009 in National Parliament and the proposal was accepted unanimously. Finally after 39 years of Liberation of Bangladesh, on 25 March, the tribunal, attorney panel and investigation organization was formed for the trial of the ones accused of war crimes.

His party alleges the charges were falsely given, along with those against Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman, and many other senior party members.

Bangladesh Television Chattogram or Bangladesh Television Chittagong, branded on-air as BTV Chittagong or BTV Chattogram, sometimes known as CTV, is a BTV-affiliated television station broadcast from Chittagong, serving southeastern Bangladesh. It is the network's first and currently the only regional television station. It was launched in 1996 and initially broadcast for one and a half hour, but the broadcast schedule significantly increased over time. It broadcasts on a full-day basis daily on both terrestrial and satellite television. BTV Chittagong started broadcasting on satellite television in 2016. It is also a nationwide terrestrial television station along with BTV Dhaka and Sangsad Television, as it reaches 75% of the area of Bangladesh terrestrially.
