The county is subdivided into three districts: the Central District, Mirza Kuchek Janghli District, and Tulem District. The county has three cities: Sowme'eh Sara, Marjaghal, and Gurab Zarmikh.

Sport Club Damash Gilan, commonly known as Damash Gilan, also spelled Damash Guilan, is an Iranian football club based in Rasht, Gilan, that competes in the Azadegan League. The club was founded in 1960 as Taj Rasht Football Club.

The 2009–10 Hazfi Cup was the 23rd season of the Iranian football knockout competition. Zob Ahan Isfahan was the defending champion.

The 2010–11 Hazfi Cup was the 24th season of the Iranian football knockout competition. Persepolis was the defending champion.

2016–17 Hazfi Cup Football tournament season

The 2016–17 Hazfi Cup was the 30th season of the Iranian football knockout competition. Zob Ahan Isfahan, the defending champions, were eliminated by Tractor Sazi in the semi final in extra time. The competition started on 12 September 2016, and the final was played on 11 May 2017. Naft Tehran defeated Tractor Sazi at the final and earned their first title.

2017–18 Hazfi Cup Football tournament season

The 2017–18 Hazfi Shield Cup was the 31st season of the Iranian football knockout competition. The competition begin in August 2017 and the final was played on May 3, 2018. Mehdi Sharifi, then center forward for Persian side Tractor SC was the Cup's top scorer with five goals. The Cup was won by Esteghla FC in a 1–0 victory over Khooneh Be Khooneh. The Finals only goal was be scored by Mame Thiam, an Esteghlal forward in the 35' minute of the game. This was Esteghlal seventh Hazfi Cup title.

2018–19 Hazfi Cup Football tournament season

The 2018–19 Hazfi Cup was the 32nd season of the Iranian football knockout competition.

Gilan Derby or Classic Gil is a three-way derby between soccer teams in Rasht and Anzali in Gilan province. These matches are one of the most sensitive sporting events in Iran. The first derby occurred in 1976, with the confrontation between Sepidrud and Malavan in the first round of the Hazfi Cup. This game ended in favor of the students of Bahman Salehnia with two goals from Ghafour Jahani and Aziz Espandar.

The 2019–20 Hazfi Cup was the 33rd season of the Iranian football knockout competition.

The 2021 Hazfi Cup was the 34th season of the Iranian football knockout competition. Foolad won the competition after deafiting Esteghlal in the final.

Shahrdari Astara is one of the representatives of Gilan province in the Azadegan League. This team has also participated in the Hazfi Cup competitions.
