Gill Raunta, the Indian Punjabi lyricist, screenwriter, musician and actor was born on 1 January 1991 in the village of Raunta in the Moga district of Punjab,India. Gill Raunta sometimes credited as Gurwinder Singh Gill (Since the end of the 2010s, Gill Raunta and his work have been acquiring an increasing influence on Punjabi cinema and music. He gained recognition in the late 2010s for his work in Punjabi films and music, contributing lyrics, dialogue and screenplays. Raunta is noted for his writing in the films Kaka Ji (2019) and Yes I Am Student (2021) [1] [2] [3] [4] and has collaborated with numerous Punjabi artists across genres. He is also the co-founder of Gill Raunta Productions and the author of the travelogue Hello, Main Lahore ton Bolda. [5] [6] [7] [8]
Raunta is a former farmer who ventured into entertainment business prior to which most of his early creative expression was influenced by his farming background. The music,In April 2015, during a prolonged wait in a grain market (mandi) to sell his wheat crop, Raunta penned the protest song Achhe dina ne Punjab di kasani dob ti ("Achhe din have drowned the farmers of Punjab"). [9] Sung by Davinder Sandhu and Amardeep Singh, the track criticized government policies and highlighted drug issues and rural distress in Punjab. It gained traction on social media, bringing attention to agrarian challenges. [9]
The productive career as a lyricist began at the end of the decade when Raunta began featuring in film soundtracks and in independent music ventures. His work has been described as being a combination of Punjabi folkism combined with modern style factor that tend to have a theme of identity, love, generational change and social interest. Raunta made his screenwriting debut with Kaka Ji (2019), for which he wrote the story, screenplay, and dialogue. The film, set in 1990s Punjab, explores a young man's decision to leave a gang after falling in love.
The other area of his creative activity was the sphere of screenwriting, where Raunta developed the screenplay, story, dialogs within work of Kaka Ji (2019). The story was narrated within 1990s, and the narrator is about a young man who has abandoned gang life, the life that he has after having a love affair that transformed his life. The movie established that Raunta was able to create narratives that were founded on the context of local socio-cultural settings, yet responsive to the issues of change and choice the world over. His second work, Yes I Am Student (2021) also established him in the film world. Raunta also participated in this production as a screenwriter and dialogue writer as well as a supporting actor. The film is a part of this new filmic migration, education, and youth identity and was directed by Tarnvir Singh Jagpal and produced under the banner of Sidhu Moose Wala and provided a closer examination of the expectations and misfortunes the Punjab-based international students go through.
In 2023, Raunta started the music and content production company Gill Raunta Productions with the ultimate aim of combining classic Punjabi cultural themes with modern audio-visual tricks. Raunta in turn entered the realm of literary writing and published a work of travelogue: Hello, Main Lahore ton Bolda in 2024. [13] The novel refers to the traditional cultural, historical and emotional connections between the Pakistani and Indian components of Punjab. It was initially published in Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi, and will be published in English, the book was a commercial success and was reprinted several times in the first few months of publication.
His working with artists of the mainstream and discussing the issues of identity, heritage and social change have helped Raunta to get the image of a serious cultural figure. His contribution in the field of music, film and literature is always ahead of the Punjabi cultural expression making him an indispensable figure in the current Punjabi creative industries.
