Gireesh Kumar Sanghi (born 8 March 1955) is an industrialist and politician. He was a Member of the Parliament of India for the Indian National Congress party representing Andhra Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament.

Sanghi obtained a BA in political science from Osmania University. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in June 2004 and served until June 2010, [1] actively involved in several committees. In February 2015 he left the Congress party and joined the BJP. [2] [3]

He is a joint-owner and director of a conglomerate of companies that includes Sanghi Textiles and A.G.A. Publications, the publisher of Telugu-language newspaper Vaartha and Hindi Swatantra Vaartha. [4] [5] [6]

A controversy arose in 2016 about Sanghi's unauthorised use of a government bungalow. [7] Sanghi was entitled to rent and use the bungalow while a member of the Rajya Sabha. However, upon ceasing to serve, he forfeited that right. However he continued to use the bungalow for over 5 years after his departure. Additionally, he failed to pay the rent due, leaving him liable for roughly ₹23,00,000. [7] There were also complaints that he had made significant unauthorised changes to the government-owned bungalows, such as converting it into a two floor accommodation. [7]

Rajya Sabha elections were held in India in 2015 to elect eight members of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. Five by-elections were also held. The regular elections were held to fill seats in the States of Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Pondicherry.

Rajya Sabha elections were held in 2018 to elect the 65 retiring members of the Rajya Sabha, Indian Parliament's upper chamber. There were, as routine, three such elections held among relevant State and Union Territory legislators by single transferable vote (STV) and Open Ballot: on 16 January to elect 3 members from Delhi and 1 member from Sikkim; on 23 March to elect 58 members from 16 States; and lastly on 21 June to elect 3 members from Kerala. Being even-numbered, 2018 was a year in which about 30% of the State Legislature-elected 233-seat component of the body is elected. The other 12 seats of the body are appointed by the President.

2020 Rajya Sabha elections is the set of indirect elections by the members of State legislatures of India, to elect new members to fill vacancies in the Rajya Sabha – the upper house of the Parliament of India. The elections are held annually and throughout the year on an ad hoc basis. The elections in 2020 are for a total of 73 seats of which 55 of them were to be elected by March 26. The remaining were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Election Commission of India later announced all the elections for the remaining 24 Rajya Sabha seats were to be held on 19 June 2020.
