Gitte Jensby Sunesen Vilhelmsen (born 11 December 1971) is a former Danish team handball player, Olympic champion and World champion. She received a gold medal with the Danish national team at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. [1] Additionally, She is a two times European Champion; from 1994 and 1996 and World champion from 1997.

Sunesen played her entire career at Danish club GOG Håndbold. During her career she won the Danish league three times and the Danish Women's Handball Cup two times. [2] She debuted for the Danish national team in 1991 at the age of 21.

She missed the 2000 Olympics due to a knee injury suffered a month prior to the tournament in a friendly match against Norway. [3] She retired from playing handball in 2003 due to knee injuries. [4] [5] In 2015 she was hired as goalkeeping coach at Odense Håndbold. [6]

Private life

During the last few years of her playing career as well as after her retirement she has worked as a primary school teacher. [4] She is married to fellow handball player Keld Vilhelmsen. Her child Lasse Vilhelmsen is also a handball player. [7]

GOG is a professional handball club based in the small town of Gudme on Funen, Denmark. The club is one of the most successful in the history of Danish handball having won the Danish Handball Championship 9 times and the Danish Handball Cup a record 12 times. Currently GOG competes in the men's Danish Handball League.

Jan Pytlick is a Danish handball coach, and trains Saudi Arabia national team. He was head coach for the Danish women's national handball team from 1998 to 2006, and again from 2007 to 2014. Pytlick has led the women's national team to victory in two Summer Olympics, as they became Olympic Champions in 2000, and again in 2004. After the team's flop at the 2014 European Women's Handball Championship, DHF and Pytlick agreed to end cooperation.

Odense Håndbold is a Danish professional women's handball team, that plays in Damehåndboldligaen, Denmark's premier women's handball league. It was created in August 2009 and took over GOG Svendborg TGI's license for the league, which was published in a press meeting August 27, 2009 in Odense Idrætshal. They changed their name to Odense Håndbold before the beginning of the 2016/2017 season.
