Gladiators Legion is an American esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the Los Angeles Gladiators of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team is owned by Stan Kroenke and Josh Kroenke of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, based in Los Angeles, California, and plays in the North American East region of OWC. In December 2019, the team announced that they would not be competing in the 2020 season of Contenders.

Franchise history

On February 15, 2018, the Los Angeles Gladiators formally announced their academy team would go under the name "Gladiators Legion" for Overwatch Contenders North America and revealed their 6-player 2018 Season 1 roster, led by head coach Gannon "RaptorZ" Nelson. [1]

In their first season of play, Legion posted a 4–1 record in the group stages, but fell to the Houston Outlaws' academy team OpTic Academy in the quarterfinals of the playoffs. [2] The following season, the team, again, qualified for the playoffs but lost to San Francisco Shock's academy team NRG Esports in the quarterfinals. [3] Gladiators Legion did not qualify for the 2018 Season 3 playoffs.

Prior to 2019 Season 1, the team announced popular Twitch streamer and former OWL player Félix "xQc" Lengyel was signed to the team as a substitute main tank. [4] Additionally, Thomas "maid" Mok was signed as the team's new head coach. [5] Gladiators Legion posted a 3–4 record for the group stages of the season, and qualified for the playoffs. The team defeated Chicken Contendies in the quarterfinals, defeated Mayhem Academy in the semifinals, and faced Philadelphia Fusion's academy team Fusion University in the finals; [6] Gladiators lost the match by a score of 1–4. [7] Following the regional finals, the team fell to ATL Academy in a qualifier match for the Atlantic Showdown, an interregional double-elimination tournament. [8] In 2019 Season 2, the Legion started the season with a 2–0 record, but it was followed by five consecutive losses to give the team a 2–5 record for the regular season. However, due to a map differential tiebreaker, the Legion qualified for the NA East playoffs as the final seed. [9] The team won their quarterfinal and semifinal match, but they fell to ATL Academy in the finals match. [10] Finishing in 4th place in the region, the team qualified for The Gauntlet, an interregional tournament. While they were able to make it past the group stages, the team fell in a sweep to Talon Esports in their first match of the knockout stage, eliminating them from the tournament. [11]

On December 5, 2019, the team announced that they would not be competing in the 2020 season of Contenders, making them the fourth academy team to drop out of the league in 2019. [12]

The series acts as the development league for aspiring Overwatch League (OWL) professionals. Founded in 2017, Contenders was created in part to consolidate existing regional tournaments into a structure to support the Overwatch League, including the Overwatch Apex tournament, Overwatch Premier Series, and Overwatch Pacific Championship.

Atlanta Reign is an American professional Overwatch esports team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Reign compete in the Overwatch League (OWL) as a member of the league's West region.

British Hurricane

British Hurricane is a British esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the London Spitfire of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team is based in London, United Kingdom and plays in the Europe region of OWC. Since inception, Hurricane has gone on to claim two regional and one interregional championships. In December 2021, the team announced that they would not be competing in future Contenders seasons.

The 2018 Los Angeles Gladiators was the first season of the Los Angeles Gladiators's existence in the Overwatch League. The team finished with a regular season record of 25–15 – the fourth best in the Overwatch League.

The 2019 Boston Uprising season was the second season of Boston Uprising's existence in the Overwatch League.

The 2019 Dallas Fuel season was the second season of the Dallas Fuel's existence in the Overwatch League and was their first full season under head coach Aaron "Aero" Atkins. The team looked to improve on their disappointing 12–28 record from 2018, where they did not qualify for the season playoffs.

The 2019 Los Angeles Gladiators season was the second season of Los Angeles Gladiators's existence in the Overwatch League and their second season under head coach David "dpei" Pei. The Gladiators looked to improve upon their 2018 season, when they qualified for the season playoffs but fell in the quarterfinals to the London Spitfire.

LGE.Huya Chinese Overwatch team

LGE.Huya, or simply LGE, is a Chinese esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC). The team is owned by LinGan e-Sports Club, based in Nanchang, China, and plays in the China region of OWC. Since inception, LGE was won two regional titles. LGE partnered with the Chengdu Hunters of the Overwatch League (OWL) to play as an academy team in 2019.

Fusion University

Fusion University (FU) is an American esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the Philadelphia Fusion of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and plays in the Europe region of OWC. Fusion has won four consecutive North America Contenders titles and most recently won the 2019 Atlantic Showdown. The team began competition in the North America region of OWC and moved to the Korea division in 2019. Prior to the 2020 season, Fusion University disbanded. They returned to competition for the Europe 2021 season.

ATL Academy

ATL Academy was an American esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the Atlanta Reign of the Overwatch League (OWL). The franchise played its first two seasons as Last Night's Leftovers before becoming an OWL affiliate team. The team is based in Atlanta, Georgia and plays in the North America East region of OWC. Atlanta won their first Contenders regional title in Season 2 of 2019 in a 4–1 victory over Gladiators Legion. In March 2020, ATL Academy was disbanded.

Team CC Chinese esports team

Team CC is a Chinese esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the Shanghai Dragons of the Overwatch League (OWL). The franchise was initially two teams, VPGAME.ZZ and VPGAME.ONE, before they were acquired by Invictus Gaming and rebreanded to iG.Fire and iG.Ice, respectively. Subsequently, the two Invictus teams were acquired by NetEase CC, a live video streaming platform based in Guangzhou, China, and consolidated into the single team Team CC. The team plays in the China region of OWC. Since inception, Team CC has won one regional title and one interregional title.

XL2 Academy American Overwatch esports team

XL2 Academy is an American esports team for the video game Overwatch that competed in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) as an academy team for the New York Excelsior of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team is based in New York City, New York and plays in the North America West region of OWC. Since inception, XL2 has qualified for the playoffs in every season of play. The team has taken a hiatus from OWC play as of November 2019.

Uprising Academy American Overwatch team

Uprising Academy is an American esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the Boston Uprising of the Overwatch League (OWL). The franchise played its first four seasons as Toronto Esports; shortly after being purchased by the Kraft Group, the team rebranded as Uprising Academy due to a naming rights issue with Toronto Defiant. The team is based in Boston, Massachusetts and currently plays in the North American region of OWC.

Team Envy <i>Overwatch</i> Overwatch team representing Team Envy

The Team Envy Overwatch team represented Team Envy, an American esports franchise, in the video game Overwatch. Originally competing under the name Team EnVyUs, the team won multiple regional and international competitions before being transferred to the Dallas Fuel franchise of the Overwatch League (OWL) by their parent organization, Envy Gaming. The franchise reestablished its Overwatch division in 2018 and currently competes in the North America West region of Overwatch Contenders (OWC) as an academy team for the Dallas Fuel. The division disbanded in April 2020.

The 2020 Los Angeles Gladiators season was the third season of Los Angeles Gladiators's existence in the Overwatch League and their third season under head coach David "dpei" Pei. The Gladiators planned to host two homestand weekends in the 2020 season, but all homestand matches were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
