Fusion University (FU) was an American esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the Philadelphia Fusion of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and plays in the Europe region of OWC. Fusion has won four consecutive North America Contenders titles and most recently won the 2019 Atlantic Showdown. The team began competition in the North America region of OWC and moved to the Korea division in 2019. Prior to the 2020 season, Fusion University disbanded. They returned to competition for the Europe 2021 season.

Franchise history

On January 29, 2018, the Philadelphia Fusion formally announced their academy team would be named Fusion University and begin competition in the North American region of Overwatch Contenders. [1]

In their first season of play, FU posted a perfect 5–0 record en route to qualify for the playoffs, where they capped off the season with victory over Toronto Esports to claim the 2018 Season 1 North America title. [2] [3] Following the win, the team fell to the Contenders Europe Champions British Hurricane in the 2018 Atlantic Showdown by a score of 1–3. [4] The following season, Fusion University again posted perfect a 5–0 record in the group stages and defeated XL2 Academy in the 2018 Season 2 North America Grand Finals to win back-to-back regional titles. [5] For the third season of 2018, the team, again, did not drop a match and defeated ATL Academy in the North America Grand Finals, taking home their third regional title in three seasons. [6]

Fusion competed in the North America East region for season one of 2019. Going into their last match of the group stages, FU had a 6–0 record and was set to face Mayhem Academy; Mayhem won the match 3–1, snapping Fusion's 30-game win streak. [7] As the second seed, the team had a first-round bye for the first week of the playoffs, and went on to defeat Gladiators Legion in the finals to claim their fourth consecutive North America Contenders title. [8] As the North America champions, Fusion qualified for the 2019 Atlantic Showdown, an interregional double-elimination tournament. The team did not lose a single match, and dropped only one map throughout its entirety, to claim the title of Atlantic Contenders Champions. [9]

After winning the first Atlantic Showdown, Fusion University announced that they would be moving from the North American division to compete in Korean Trials; the move was reportedly made to abide by the new region lock rules, which were implemented in 2019 Season 1, though FU was given a season-long grace period. [10] The team qualified for Korea Contenders, but they struggled in the group stages, posting a meager 3–4 record. FU qualified for the Korea regional playoffs, but they fell in the quarterfinals to RunAway. [11]

In December 2019, T1, who is also owned by Comcast Spectacor, became the Philadelphia Fusion's academy team and took Fusion University's spot in Contenders Korea. [12]

In May 2021, Fusion University announced that it was returning to Overwatch Contenders as the second academy team for the Philadelphia Fusion. [13] The team competed in the Europe division during the June 2021 tournament, placing 4th in the tournament after losing to British Hurricane 3–1 on June 17. The team disbanded after the tournament ended. [14]

The Excelsior compete in the Overwatch League (OWL) as a member of the league's West region. Founded in 2017, the team is one of twelve founding members of the Overwatch League and is the first professional esports team to represent the city of New York. The team is owned by Andy Miller, co-owner of the Sacramento Kings and NRG Esports. The Shock have won three midseason tournament titles, qualified for three season playoffs, won two back-to-back OWL Grand Finals, making them one of the winningest franchise's in OWL history.

Overwatch Contenders Overwatch esports league

Overwatch Contenders (OWC) is an international esports league for the video game Overwatch that is organized by Blizzard Entertainment. The series acts as the development league for aspiring Overwatch League (OWL) professionals. Founded in 2017, Contenders was created in part to consolidate existing regional tournaments into a structure to support the Overwatch League, including the Overwatch Apex tournament, Overwatch Premier Series, and Overwatch Pacific Championship.

London Spitfire British professional esports team

London Spitfire is a professional Overwatch team representing the city of London, United Kingdom. The Spitfire compete in the Overwatch League (OWL) as a member of the league's West region. Founded in 2017, London Spitfire is one of the league's twelve founding members and is one of two professional Overwatch teams representing a European city. The team is owned by Jack Etienne and the esports organization Cloud9, who also own British Hurricane, an academy team for the Spitfire that competed in Overwatch Contenders (OWC).

Philadelphia Fusion American professional esports team

Philadelphia Fusion is an American-based professional Overwatch esports team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Fusion compete in the Overwatch League (OWL) as a member of the league's East region. Founded in 2017, Philadelphia is one of the league's twelve founding members and is the first professional esports team based in Pennsylvania. While the team competes in South Korea, Fusion Arena, a 3,500-seat dedicated esports arena in south Philadelphia, is planned to serve as the Fusion's permanent home. The team is owned by Comcast Spectacor, who also own Fusion University and T1, academy teams for the Philadelphia Fusion that compete in Overwatch Contenders.

Toronto Defiant Canadian professional esports team

Toronto Defiant is a Canadian professional Overwatch esports team based in Toronto, Ontario. The Defiant compete in the Overwatch League (OWL) and are a member of the league's West region. Founded in 2018, Toronto began play as one of eight expansion teams in 2019 and is one of two professional Overwatch teams based in Canada. The team is owned by OverActive Media, who also owned the Montreal Rebellion, a former academy team for the Defiant that competed in Overwatch Contenders (OWC).

Guangzhou Charge Chinese professional esports team

Guangzhou Charge is a Chinese professional Overwatch esports team based in Guangzhou, China. The Charge compete in the Overwatch League (OWL) as a member of the league's East region. Founded in 2018, Guangzhou Charge began play as one of eight expansion teams in 2019 and is one of four professional Overwatch teams based in China. The team is owned by Nenking Group and is managed by the esports brand of Nenking, Ultra Prime Esports.

British Hurricane

British Hurricane was a British esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the London Spitfire of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team was based in London, United Kingdom and played in the Europe region of OWC. Since inception, Hurricane won two regional and one interregional championships. In December 2021, the team announced that they would not be competing in future Contenders seasons.

Gladiators Legion

Gladiators Legion is an American esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the Los Angeles Gladiators of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team is owned by Stan Kroenke and Josh Kroenke of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, based in Los Angeles, California, and plays in the North American East region of OWC. In December 2019, the team announced that they would not be competing in the 2020 season of Contenders.

LGE.Huya Chinese Overwatch team

LGE.Huya, or simply LGE, is a Chinese esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC). The team is owned by LinGan e-Sports Club, based in Nanchang, China, and plays in the China region of OWC. Since inception, LGE was won two regional titles. LGE partnered with the Chengdu Hunters of the Overwatch League (OWL) to play as an academy team in 2019.

ATL Academy

ATL Academy was an American esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the Atlanta Reign of the Overwatch League (OWL). The franchise played its first two seasons as Last Night's Leftovers before becoming an OWL affiliate team. The team is based in Atlanta, Georgia and plays in the North America East region of OWC. Atlanta won their first Contenders regional title in Season 2 of 2019 in a 4–1 victory over Gladiators Legion. In March 2020, ATL Academy was disbanded.

Montreal Rebellion

Montreal Rebellion was a Canadian esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the Toronto Defiant of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team was owned by OverActive Media, based in Montreal, Quebec, and played in the North America region of OWC.

XL2 Academy American Overwatch esports team

XL2 Academy is an American esports team for the video game Overwatch that competed in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) as an academy team for the New York Excelsior of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team is based in New York City, New York and plays in the North America West region of OWC. Since inception, XL2 has qualified for the playoffs in every season of play. The team has taken a hiatus from OWC play as of November 2019.

Uprising Academy American Overwatch team

Uprising Academy is an American esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC) and an academy team for the Boston Uprising of the Overwatch League (OWL). The franchise played its first four seasons as Toronto Esports; shortly after being purchased by the Kraft Group, the team rebranded as Uprising Academy due to a naming rights issue with Toronto Defiant. The team is based in Boston, Massachusetts and currently plays in the North American region of OWC.

The Team Envy Overwatch team represented Team Envy, an American esports franchise, in the video game Overwatch. Originally competing under the name Team EnVyUs, the team won multiple regional and international competitions before being transferred to the Dallas Fuel franchise of the Overwatch League (OWL) by their parent organization, Envy Gaming. The franchise reestablished its Overwatch division in 2018 and currently competes in the North America West region of Overwatch Contenders (OWC) as an academy team for the Dallas Fuel. The division disbanded in April 2020.

The One Winner Chinese Overwatch team

The One Winner, or simply T1w, is a Chinese esports team for the video game Overwatch competing in Overwatch Contenders (OWC). The team is a former academy team for the Guangzhou Charge of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team was founded under the name Miracle Team One; after the formation of T1w Esports Club, the owner of the team, the team rebranded to The One Winner and rebranded, again, to T1w.GZA after becoming the academy team for the Charge. T1w plays in the China region of OWC, and since inception, they have won one OWC regional title and multiple other major tournaments not affiliated with Overwatch Contenders.

RunAway Former South Korean esports team

RunAway was a South Korean esports team, best known for their Overwatch division that competed in Overwatch Apex and Overwatch Contenders (OWC). The team was founded in 2016 by Yoon "Runner" Dae-hoon and is co-owned with his wife Lee "Flowervin" Hyun-ah. RunAway has competed in numerous major tournaments and fielded the team that would become the Vancouver Titans of the Overwatch League (OWL). The team's Overwatch division competed in the Korea region of OWC, and since inception, they won three OWC regional titles and four NetEase Esports X Tournament (NeXT) titles. They expanded into League of Legends in late 2019 before shutting down the division shortly afterwards. In June 2021, RunAway disbanded its Overwatch division.

The 2020 Philadelphia Fusion season was the third season of the Philadelphia Fusion's existence in the Overwatch League and their first under head coach Kim "KDG" Dong-gun. The Fusion planned to host three homestand weekends in the 2020 season, with the first two taking place at The Met in Philadelphia and the third at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. While their first homestand weekend took place, all following homestand events were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2020 Overwatch League Grand Finals 2020 Overwatch League championship match

The 2020 Overwatch League Grand Finals was the third championship match of the Overwatch League (OWL), which took place on October 10, 2020. The series was the conclusion of the 2020 Overwatch League playoffs and was played between the San Francisco Shock and Seoul Dynasty.

Alarm (gamer) South Korean professional Overwatch player

Kim Kyeong-bo, better known by his online alias Alarm, was a South Korean professional Overwatch support player in the Overwatch League (OWL). He began his career in 2016, signing with BK Stars, and later played for Lunatic-Hai and Fusion University of Overwatch Contenders (OWC). In his time with Fusion University, Kim won four OWC regional championships and won the OWC interregional Atlantic Showdown tournament.
