  1. "She Fell In Love"

Gleesh is a mixtape by American rapper Fat Trel. It was released on April 1, 2014, by Maybach Music Group and his own label, Slutty Boyz, and also released for digital download on LiveMixtapes. [1] The mixtape features guest appearances from Maybach Music labelmates Rick Ross, Wale, Rockie Fresh, Stalley, and Tracy T, alongside other features including Rich Hil, P-Wild, and Boosa Da Shoota. It also features production from Young Chop, Harry Fraud, No Credit, Izze The Producer, and All Star, among others. [2] And, the mixtape was supported by a sole single: "She Fell In Love". [3]

Contents

Gleesh received mixed to positive reviews from music critics. [4] In 2018, Gleesh was re-released as a retail commercial mixtape, exclusively on streaming platforms (such as Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal and Amazon Music) in its entirety, which excluded two songs: "Shoot (Remix)" and "In My Bag". Release and promotion

Singles

The mixtape's one and only lead single, "She Fell In Love", was released on December 10, 2013. [3] The song was produced by Izze The Producer. [3] The music video for the song was released on March 14, 2014 on YouTube, two months prior after the song was released, and a month before the mixtape's release. [9]

Music videos

The music video for the song, "Rich As Fuck", was released on April 14, 2014, two weeks after the mixtape's release. [10] The second music video, "Walkin Thru My Hood", was released on October 2, 2014. [11] The third music video, "Rest In Peace", was released on January 31, 2015. [12] And, the fourth and last music video, "What We Doing", was released on March 10, 2015, on the official WorldStarHipHop channel on YouTube. [13]

Critical reception

Gleesh received generally mixed to positive reviews from music critics. BET stated that Fat Trel's the mixtape features "the same fight-night beats that helped make MMG the force it is today. Like before, one of Trel's greatest strengths is his ability to tailor his flows to match different tempos". [14] Plus, BET commented that Fat Trel may be "signed to a major label", but he still "keeps it street" on songs like his mixtape's opening track, "Datz Kool", which started out with Trel raps: "Fuck police, I smoke like I ride and I ride like a G / And if I'm in the Chi, I'ma ride to the D with a 9 on my side". [14] Next, BET commented, "Being from where some of the locals call the "midieast", his sound reps for the East and bangs like the South, as does his bars". BET praised three songs from the mixtape, "Walkin' Thru My Hood", "How You Feel", and "What We Doing", stating that they combine "melodic undertones with hard-hitting bass and feverish snare". [14] Plus, BET also commented, "trap music fans will feel at home here". And, finally, BET also praised the song, "Rest In Peace", stating that it's "one of the most important tracks for Trel – a rare showing of his raw and emotional side. [14] Whereas much of the tape is simply another good effort for him – a filler of street tales, women and substance-laced party nights, his usual lane – this one, perhaps, is a glimpse of what's to come once he gets his mind in album mode". [14]

XXL's Max Goldberg commented: "This is the first project from Fat Trel since he joined forces with MMG empire. Although he's working under new guidance, he doesn't stray far from comfort zone. [15] That's not a bad thing". Plus, the critic says that the mixtape is so "effective", because Trel "establishes his subjects early on – life on the streets of Washington, D.C., his experiences with drugs, and lots of thoughts of thots – and delivers it an entertaining way over excellent contributions from producers like Harry Fraud, Young Chop, and All Star". [15] Next, the critic commented that the mixtape is a "testament" to both the beat selection and Trel's skill that a "soul-sampling head-bobber" like "Fresh" doesn't sound out of place next to the drum heavy banger "In My Bag" or the toned-down drug rap sounds of "Treez & Liquor". [15] The critic praised the song "In My Bag" by stating that it "boasts a similarly simple line that is made excellent by Trel's flow". Also, the critics says that the lyrics: "Sometimes I smoke, sometimes I drink, sometimes I pop the pink / I might wake up and got no shirt I might just rock a mink", "isn't inherently an exciting rhyme but Trel makes it infectious". [15] The critic gave a critic review on three songs from the mixtape, "Buku Chips", "Real", or "Shoot", stating they came off as "generic and unexciting", but the song "Real" serves as a "reminder that the shadowy illuminati overlords who obviously control all rap music need to implement a rule so that any song with a boast about doing anything, "one time for the real ni**as", must be exceptionally creative or else never reach the light of day". And, finally, the critic praised the mixtape stating that it was a "crucial project" for Fat Trel, and he "ultimately succeeded". [15]

Controversy

Fat Trel received backlash and was threatened with a lawsuit from the FOX TV show, Glee, for the original artwork cover, where it features one of the show's characters crying and covered in seminal fluid. [16] [17] During an interview with HotNewHipHop , Fat Trel recalled about being approached about the controversial cover art and says that he was told that it was disrespectful and "belittled their character". [16] [17] Fat Trel says:

Basically, they just felt disrespected. They felt like I downsized their character. You know what I mean? So, that's just what it is. It is what it is, man. Like you said, that's Fat Trel for you. You feel me? We make bitches cry. We skeet on bitches faces. That's what the fuck we do. You feel me? [18]

Fat Trel eventually ended up changing the artwork cover to a pinkish tinted cover of himself. [16]
