GMAA 3D Plaque

Global Music Awards Africa (also referred to as GMAA Awards or GMAA) is an annual award, presented by Smart Focus Media. [1] GMAA honors outstanding musical accomplishments in Africa, with the goal to discover the next African star. The first edition was supposed to hold on 6 March 2021, at Accra International Conference Centre in Ghana. Due to COVID-19 regulations in Ghana, it was held virtually on 20 March 2021, at AICC. The most recent ceremony was held on 16 April 2022 at Lagos Oriental Hotel in Nigeria.

History

On 6 February 2021, Global Music Awards Africa took to their social media to unveil a 3D picture of the official plaque. [2] [3]

On 19 March 2021, GMAA CEO Daniel Adofo told Music In Africa, “Our mission is to unite Africa through music. The scheme will also honor the hard work and dedication of various stakeholders in the music industry”. [4] The event is composed of 30 categories. [5]

Notable moments

2021:Ghana edition

On 23 March 2021, Gabriel Myers Hansen, a writer for Music in Africa, highlighted the ceremony. [6] At the opening edition of GMAA, held on 20 March 2021 in Ghana. The Nigerian singer Bella Shmurda, had the highest award-winnings, with his song "Cash App", winning the Global Collaboration of the Year and Global Most Popular Song of the Year. South African musician Master KG, won Record of the Year with his song "Jerusalema". Ghanaian Singer Kuami Eugene, won Album of the Year with Son of Africa, studio album. [6]

Nigerian singer Burna Boy won Global Artist of the Year. Tanzanian singer Nedy, won Songwriter of the Year. Ghanaian singer KiDi, won Global Male Vocalist of the Year. Nigerian DJ Cuppy won Global Female Vocalist of the Year, as Teni wins Global Female Act of the Year. According to Gabriel, "the former president of the Musicians Union of Ghana, Bice Osei Kuffour, hiplife veteran Reggie Rockstone, singer Nana Ama and Daniel Kofi Amoateng, were all presented with special recognition awards for their contribution to African music". 2022:Nigeria edition

On 21 December 2021, the organizers opened the nomination portal, [7] and was closed on 21 January 2022, shortly after it was recorded South African artists dominated the nominations, [8] including the Hip Hop Artist of the Year category, dominated by South Africans, and Ghanaians, on 24 January 2022. [8] At the second edition of GMAA, held on 16 April 2022 in Nigeria, the South African rapper Emtee won the Hip Hop Artist of the Year award. [9] While the Nigerian musician Rema won "Afrobeat Artist of the Year". [10]

Ghana singer Stonebwoy won 'Global Act of the Year', and his song "Greedy man", won 'Dancehall Song of the Year'. [10] KiDi song "Touch It", won 'Record of the Year'. Album of the Year was won by the Nigerian singer Wizkid, for his fourth studio album Made in Lagos , [10] while Naira Marley won 'Biggest Fanbase Award', while Mavin acts Ayra Starr bagged 'Female Artist of the Year', and DJ Big N won DJ of the Year. [10] Mercy Chinwo won 'Gospel Artist of the Year', and the South African music group Mi Casa won 'Group of the Year'. [10]

2023:South Africa edition

On 22 May 2023, the organizers opened the nomination portal and closed on 4 June 2023, shortly after The South African revealed a multitude of South African artists dominating the nomination list. [11] [12]

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known professionally as Wizkid, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. A prominent figure in the modern-day Afrobeats music scene, Wizkid is regarded as one of the biggest and most influential African artists of all time. He began recording music at the age of 11 and released a collaborative album with the Glorious Five (5), a group he and a couple of his church friends formed. In 2009, Wizkid signed a record deal with Banky W's Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E). He later rose to the limelight after releasing "Holla at Your Boy", the lead single from his debut studio album, Superstar (2011), which also spawned the singles "Tease Me/Bad Guys" and "Don't Dull".

Frank Elinam Cobbinah, commonly known by his stage name Atumpan, is a Ghanaian afrobeats and dancehall singer. Cobbinah founded his own record label which mainly signs Afro beats artists.

Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., is a Ghanaian reggae-dancehall artist. He is known by his stage name Shatta Wale, formerly Bandana. His best-known singles are "Dancehall King", "My level" and "We taking over". He is also known for "Already" from Beyoncé's Black Is King which also featured Major Lazer. His song "Dancehall King" earned him the Artiste of the Year at the 2014 edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Wale is also an actor who appeared in the films Never Say Never, The trial of Shatta Wale and Shattered Lives. Wale's 2004 recording "Moko Hoo" was nominated for a Ghana Music Award.

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu , known professionally as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer. He rose to stardom in 2012 after releasing "Like to Party", the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E (2013). In 2017, Burna Boy signed with Bad Habit/Atlantic Records in the United States and Warner Music Group internationally. His third studio album Outside (2018) marked his major-label debut.

Yemi Eberechi Alade, is a Nigerian Afropop singer, songwriter, actress and activist. Her music which incorporates Afro; Highlife, Dancehall, Pop and R&B has been of influence in many African countries and the world as she is acclaimed "Mama Africa" for this and her versatility in using different African languages and attires in her songs and music videos. She sings in English, Igbo, Pidgin, Yoruba, French, Swahili and Portuguese. Alade's father was a police commissioner of Yoruba descent, while her mother is of Igbo descent.

Vera Hamenoo-Kpeda(born 23 June 1992), better known by her stage name MzVee, is a Ghanaian singer, afropop, dancehall and R&B artiste. Her debut solo album features several hit singles including 'Borkor Borkor', 'Natural Girl' and 'Dancehall Queen'. MzVee was signed to the record label Lynx Entertainment and was the winner of the New Artiste of the Year award at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards. She parted ways with Lynx Entertainment in the year 2019. She is currently a solo artist.

Bantu is a 13-piece band based in Lagos, Nigeria. Their music is a fusion of Afrofunk, Afrobeat, highlife and Yoruba music. The group features multi-instrumentalists and singers who perform as a collective.

Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, better known by his stage name Mr Eazi, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record executive. He is the pioneer of Banku music, a fusion of sound he describes as a mixture of Ghanaian highlife and Nigerian chord progressions and patterns. Mr Eazi relocated to Kumasi in 2008 and enrolled at KNUST, where he began booking artists to perform at college parties. He showed interest in music after recording a guest verse on "My Life", a song that gained traction and became a popular record at KNUST. Mr Eazi released his debut mixtape About to Blow in 2013. He gained an international audience following the release of the Efya-assisted single "Skin Tight". His second mixtape, titled Life Is Eazi, Vol. 1 – Accra To Lagos, was released in 2017.

Eugene Kwame Marfo, who goes by the stage name Kuami Eugene is a Ghanaian High-life and Afrobeat singer-songwriter. He is signed to Lynx Entertainment and Empire Distribution and is known for several songs, including "Angela", "Wish Me Well," "Ohemaa" and many others. He won the New Artist awards in 2018 from the Ghana Music Awards and the Ghana Music Awards UK. He also received the Most Promising Artist in Africa award from AFRIMA. In 2019, Kwame Eugene received 7 nominations at the Ghana Music Awards and went on to win the awards for Album of the Year, Producer of the Year, and Highlife Artist of the Year. He was crowned Artist of the Year and High-life Artist of the Year at the 2020 Ghana Music Awards.

Joyce Akosua Twene also known as Joyce Blessing is a Ghanaian and African gospel musician.

Afrobeats, or Afro-pop or Afro-fusion, is an umbrella term to describe popular music from West Africa and the diaspora that initially developed in Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK in the 2000s and 2010s. Afrobeats is less of a style per se, and more of a descriptor for the fusion of sounds flowing out of Nigeria and Ghana. Genres such as hiplife, jùjú music, highlife and naija beats, among others, were amalgamated under the "Afrobeats" umbrella.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Juls</span> Ghanaian-British Producer

Julian Nii Ayitey Adjin Nicco-Annan, better known by his stage name Juls, is a British-Ghanaian record producer, disc jockey, and musician. He is considered one of the pioneering producers of African music in the diaspora, particularly in Afrobeats circles. He is best known for the production of songs like Bankulize and "Skin Tight" by Mr Eazi which accrued over two million views on YouTube; "Feel Alright" by Show Dem Camp, Rudebwoi Love by Stonebwoy and Gwarn by Burna Boy. He has collaborated with labels like BBnz Live, Toko Beatz, Stereofly Records, Cosmic Harmony, and Lost Ones and worked on A&R for Mr.Eazi's Life is Eazi album.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">3Music Awards</span> Annual award event in Ghana

The 3 Music Award is Ghanaian music awards ceremony held annually since 2018 to celebrate Ghanaian music. It was established by the 3Music Network with Media General TV3 as broadcasters. The Multimedia group became the media right holder in the second and subsequent edition. In 2020, the Fan fest which was scheduled to take place at the Accra Polo Grounds was cancelled and a Virtual award ceremony was held from the Fantasy Dome, Trade Fair La. This was because of the ban on public gathering due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chukwuka Chukwuma Ekweani is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer signed to Warner Music South Africa and Atlantic Records. He was formerly signed to Chocolate City, a member of Warner Music Group independent label services ADA. His international hit single "Love Nwantiti", also known as "Love Nwantiti ", was released in 2019 by Chocolate City. On 29 March 2022, the song debuted at number one, following the launch of the Billboard Afrobeats chart. On 9 May 2022, it became the first-ever African song to surpass one billion streams on Spotify and has since been deemed "the biggest hit in African history".

Raphael Camidoh Kofi Attachie known by the stage name Camidoh is a Ghanaian Afropop, R&B and Afrobeats songwriter and musician. He was nominated in the 2023 BET Awards.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sugarcane (Camidoh song)</span> Song by Camidoh

"Sugarcane" is a song by Ghanaian singer and songwriter Camidoh, featuring the Nigerian record producer Phantom, released in 2021 by Grind Don't Stop Records, through Crux Global, and MOVES Recordings. A remix, with Mayorkun, and Darkoo, featuring the Ghanaian singer King Promise, was released in 2022. The song gained popularity across TikTok, following the release of the remix.

Efe Grace is a Ghanaian singer and songwriter. She is a gospel musician. Efe Grace was nominated for the Gospel Artist of the Year award during the 2021 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Korte Dorbor Bazzie, known professionally as Kobazzie, is a Liberian singer and songwriter. Born in Voinjama, Lofa County, he was inspired to pursue a career in music after hearing Quincy B's collaborative single with Tan Tan B, titled "State of Emergency". He is the recipient of several accolades, including New Artist of the Year at the 2016 Liberia Music Awards and Afropop Artist of the Year at the 2019 Tunes Liberia Music Awards.
