Global Thinkers Forum (GTF) is a non-profit, London-based organisation and was incubated at Oxford University's Said Business School in 2011. It was created to "help our societies and leaders navigate a very complex world".[ citation needed ] GTF launched in 2012 in Amman, Jordan.

History

GTF was founded in 2012 by Elizabeth Filippouli.[ citation needed ] The 1st GTF and inaugural GTF Awards for Excellence took place in Amman, Jordan (6-8 October 2012) discussing the role of the modern Arab woman, in the MENA region and globally. [1] GTF convened some 350 international executives under the patronage of Queen Rania of Jordan [2] [3] and with the support of the King Abdullah II Fund for Development. GTF was incubated at Oxford Said Business School as an initiative to create new thinking and effect positive change for the world. [4] Speakers and audience at GTF 2012 discussed issues such as the Arab Spring and the role of women in social transformation. [5]

In 2013 Global Thinkers Forum organized its annual event and the GTF 2013 Awards for Excellence in Athens, Greece under the theme 'Leadership & Collaboration'. Among the GTF 2013 speakers in Athens were the High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilizations Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Marianna V. Vardinoyiannis, Geir Lippestad, the defense lawyer for the Norwegian right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik who shared his experience about the impact of terrorist activities in Norway, Professor Tu Weiming, Stephen Cole, Ali Aslan, Hani Masri. [ citation needed ] The 2nd Forum opened with a keynote by the High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilizations H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al Nasser, highlighting the importance of leadership responsibility at an international level. [6] The event was held under the auspices of the Mayor of Athens Yorgos Kaminis [7] Discussions on matters concerning Leadership, Collaboration and Cultural Understanding were held within the framework of the Forum. In 2014 GTF hosted its Awards in Dubai, UAE on 28 November 2014 under the theme: 'Arab Women as Changemakers-A Celebration of Achievements'. [9]

In 2015 GTF co-hosted a Forum in Athens, Greece in partnership with Carnegie Council under the theme 'Democracy & Values', [10] creating conversations around leadership and accountability, the issue of collective liability and ethical business. [11] The event was attended by 150 Academics, CEOs, public officials and entrepreneurs and was held under the auspices of the Municipality of Athens,. [12]

Organization

Global Thinkers Forum also creates smaller events such as workshops and roundtable discussions, promoting women's [13] and youth empowerment. In April 2014, Global Thinkers Forum and Google UAE co-hosted an event dedicated to women entrepreneurs & innovation in the Google offices in Dubai, in partnership with Oasis500 and Google. [14] The event featured eight young women pitching to a crowd of MENA investors [15] In July 2014 GTF hosted the State Department's Special Representative for Commercial and Business Affairs (CBA) Lorraine Hariton in London, for a conversation on international business development, moderated by Bloomberg's Stryker McGuire. [16]

Five-year goals

GTF's mission (five-year goals 2012-2016)is cited to 'nurture leadership talent among women and youth'. As part of this commitment the think tank maps, links, collects and integrates information from across the international system, creates events that help share knowledge and establish common best practices in governance, business, society. [17]

GTF also produces publications [18] and engages its members in sector-specific initiatives. In 2014 GTF partnered with UN Women to help advance the Beijing +20 platform and create conversations on Women's Rights in the MENA region. [19]

Funding sources and membership

GTF is funded by sponsors from the private sector, grants, donations and through annual memberships.[ citation needed ]

Advisory board

The GTF Advisory Board steers the overall strategy, direction and effectiveness of the organization. Notable members of the GTF Boards include: Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Saskia Sassen, Muna AbuSulayman, Salim Amin, Queen Sylvia of Buganda, Roya Mahboob, Victoria A. GTF Awards for Excellence

Ibrahim Abouleish was an Egyptian philanthropist, drug designer and chemist. He began his chemistry and medicine studies at the age of 19 in Austria. During this time he was granted patents for a number of new medicines, especially for osteoporosis and arteriosclerosis.

Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser is a Qatari diplomat and the former permanent representative of Qatar to the United Nations, appointed on 11 September 1998. Prior to this office at the United Nations, Al-Nasser had served as the ambassador to Jordan from 1993. He worked for his country's foreign affairs department beginning in November 1972. He was the President of the Sixty-sixth session of the United Nations General Assembly from 14 September 2011 to 18 September 2012.

Ameera bint Aidan bin Nayef Al-Taweel Al-Otaibi is a Saudi Arabian philanthropist and former princess. Born to the Otaibi tribe with no affiliation to the Saud dynasty, Ameera was married to Prince Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud, and assumed the role of Vice Chairperson of Al-Waleed bin Talal Foundation. INJAZ Al-Arab is a non-profit organization for education and training in workforce readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship across the Arab World. INJAZ Al-Arab is the Regional Operating Center of JA Worldwide (JAW), one of the largest global non-governmental organizations dedicated to addressing fundamental social and economic challenges faced by young people. INJAZ Al-Arab is also an active participant in the United Nations Global Compact. Over 5 million students have participated in a broad base of entrepreneurship training opportunities aimed at developing basic business skills to start and run their own businesses while obtaining soft skills increasingly demanded by the private sector. Since its inception, INJAZ Al-Arab has built a network of over 100,000 classroom volunteers, who are leaders from the corporate world. INJAZ Al-Arab has a Regional Board of Directors, which comprises 24 executives that manage some companies and institutions, as well as a team of staff, led by Akef Aqrabawi, President and CEO of the Middle East/North Africa for JA Worldwide.

Scott Shuster is a US broadcast journalist and a professional business and international policy event moderator and interviewer of C-suite and business unit executives at corporate events. For many years a foreign correspondent of ABC News (US), one of the early producers of All Things Considered at NPR, National Public Radio, and later the editorial director for live events within the BusinessWeek Group of The McGraw-Hill Companies, Shuster has conducted over 5000 live interviews of management leaders before audiences of their business peers at corporate, industry, professional, and governmental policy and investment events around the world.

Sofana R. Dahlan is an accomplished Saudi lawyer and social entrepreneur. She holds the prized distinction of being among the first three female lawyers to have been granted the permit to practice law in Saudi Arabia and has served as a legal consultant in different parts of the Arab world including Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Kuwait. Dahlan was also the Vice Governor for Entrepreneurship Advancement at the Small and Medium Enterprises Authority of Saudi Arabia from 2016 to 2017, making her the first Saudi female senior economic policymaker. Most recently she has enrolled at King's College, London in order to pursue a PhD in Culture Media and Creative Industries specialising in: The Obstacles Facing the Development of Creative Industries in Saudi Arabia: A Deep Dive into Intellectual Property Infringement and its Implications.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Safwan M. Masri</span>

Safwan M. Masri is a Jordanian professor, senior academic administrator, global educator, and scholar of education in the Arab World. He is the current Dean of Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President for Global Centers and Global Development at Columbia University and was head of Columbia Global Centers (2011-2022) as well as director of Columbia Global Center in Amman since its founding in 2009.
