The Gold Coast Cougars were the re-branded Daikyo Dolphins after major sponsor Daikyo had to end sponsorship of the team due to financial problems with the Australian arm of the company.

The Daikyo Dolphins were formerly the Gold Coast Clippers, a foundation team in the now defunct Australian Baseball League. The Clippers changed their name to the Daikyo Dolphins following the signing of a major sponsorship deal with Japanese real estate development company Daikyo to create one of the strongest teams in ABL history. Daikyo ended its sponsorship of the club due to financial troubles in Australia, and after a season of being known as the Gold Coast Dolphins in 1992/93, the club changed its name again to the East Coast Cougars as of the 1993/94 season.

The Parramatta Patriots were one of the eight foundation teams of the now defunct Australian Baseball League. They disbanded after the 1990–91 season due to heavy financial losses and were replaced by the Sydney Blues in the following season.

The Sydney Metros were one of the eight foundation teams of the now defunct Australian Baseball League. They disbanded after the 1989–90 season due to heavy financial losses and sold their licence to the Sydney Wave.

The Sydney Wave were formed after the first Australian Baseball League championship purchasing the Sydney Metros licence. Gary Nilsson is a former Australian baseball player who played as a pitcher for the Lakeland Tigers in 1984 and in the Australian Baseball League from 1989 to 1996. He is the brother of former All-Star, Dave Nilsson as well as former minor leaguer Bob Nilsson. His son is Mitch Nilsson, currently contracted to the Cleveland Indians and nephew Jay Nilsson, former Gulf Coast Indians player. The Adelaide Giants are a professional baseball team that plays in the Australian Baseball League. They are one of the six foundation franchises of the league, in its first incarnation from 1989 to 1999. The team adopted the name Bite or Adelaide Bite when the league relaunched in 2010, officially Adelaide ETSA Bite, when the South Australian power company ETSA Utilities became its major sponsor.
