Government Medical College, Idukki (abbreviated GMCI) is a government medical college in Kerala, India. Established in 2014, the campus is located in Cheruthoni, Idukki. The institute is affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences, Thrissur and its MBBS programme is approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) since 2022.
The medical college was established in 2014 and had permission to admit 50 students. [1] But in 2017, the Medical Council of India denied accreditation due to lack of proper infrastructure and facilities and the college could not admit new students. The existing students were shifted to other medical colleges. [2] In 2022, the National Medical Commission granted approval for admitting 100 students for MBBS. [3] [4]
On November 15, 2022, the college commenced classes for first year MBBS students. 77 students secured admission in the college. [5]

Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 was an Indian legislation that provided for the constitution of the Medical Council of India (MCI). The Act was repealed on 25 September 2020 and the MCI was dissolved on the same date. The standard entry-to-practice degree in modern evidence-based medicine in India is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Alternative systems of Medicine in India are Ayurveda (BAMS), Unani (BUMS), Siddha(BSMS), Homeopathy (BHMS). M.B.B.S. a credential earned upon completion of a five-and-a-half-year undergraduate program. The curriculum is divided into one year of preclinical studies in general science subjects and three and a half years of paraclinical and clinical studies, followed by a one-year clinical internship. Before beginning the internship, students are required to pass several examinations, the final one of which is conducted in two parts. Postgraduate education in medical specialties typically takes 3 additional years of study after the MBBS and concludes with the award of a Master of Surgery or Doctor of Medicine(MD). Medini Rai Medical College and Hospital, Palamu is a full-fledged tertiary referral Government Medical college. It was established in the year 2019. The college offers the degree Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS).
However, the college had not admitted new batches after the first and second year MBBS students were shifted to other medical colleges after the MCI denied permission in 2017 due to 'lack of clinical facilities'.
