Sizeni Grace Pampiri-Bothman is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from November 2010 to May 2014. She has been a member of the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party (SACP) since 2012.
Before joining the National Assembly,Bothman served in the North West Provincial Legislature,where she was the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports,Arts and Culture from May 2009 to August 2010. Her dismissal from the Executive Council,effected by Premier Maureen Modiselle,was highly unpopular with both the SACP and the Congress of South African Trade Unions and therefore severely undermined the ANC's relations with its Tripartite Alliance partners in the North West.
Pampiri-Bothman was formerly a prominent activist in the South African Commercial,Catering and Allied Workers Union,an affiliate of the ANC-aligned Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), [1] and she later served as a local councillor in Klerksdorp in the North West. [2] She was also a prominent member of the South African Communist Party (SACP) in the North West. [1]
Pursuant to the 2009 general election,Pampiri-Bothman was elected to represent the ANC in the North West Provincial Legislature,and on 8 May 2009,North West Premier Maureen Modiselle announced that she would join the North West Executive Council as a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports,Arts and Culture. [2] [3] Her appointment was viewed as reflective of an intentional strategy to strengthen the Tripartite Alliance by including representatives of the SACP in the provincial executive. [1]
On 16 August 2010,Modiselle abruptly announced that she had fired Pampiri-Bothman from the Executive Council with immediate effect,"for defiance and showing disrespect and disdain to the highest office in the province [ the office of the Premier]". [4] Modiselle said that Pampiri-Bothman's had demonstrated behaviour which could be "very detrimental and catastrophic" to service delivery and said that she was ordering an external audit to investigate allegations that Pampiri-Bothman's department had misused public funds and awarded tenders irregularly. [5] The press statement noted that Pampiri-Bothman was the second North West MEC to be fired outright since the end of apartheid in 1994 (the other was Mmamokwena Gaoretelelwe). [4] Finance MEC Louisa Mabe was appointed to fill her portfolio in an acting capacity. [4]
Modiselle's office continued to imply that Pampiri-Bothman's dismissal was related to corruption or other serious misconduct, [6] while Pampiri-Bothman's supporters claimed that she was fired because she had been intending to order her own investigation into allegations of improper tender awards in the provincial government. [1] The provincial COSATU leadership,for example,claimed that Pampiri-Bothman had sought to investigate alleged corruption during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. [5] COSATU claimed that Pampiri-Bothman had been removed on factional grounds and that it had been insufficiently consulted on the decision beforehand. [5]
Likewise,though the opposition Democratic Alliance welcomed Pampiri-Bothman's dismissal, [5] it severely increased tensions between the provincial ANC and the provincial SACP. The provincial SACP leadership viewed Pampiri-Bothman's removal as connected to a broader project of purging SACP members (notably national politician Gwede Mantashe) from leadership positions ahead of the ANC's 52nd National Conference,scheduled for December 2012. [1]
After she was dismissed from the Executive Council,Pampiri-Bothman resigned from the North West Provincial Legislature,and on 2 November 2010 she was sworn into an ANC seat in the National Assembly,the lower house of the South African Parliament,where she filled a casual vacancy. [7] She completed the legislative term in the seat but did not stand for re-election in 2014. [7] However,during the legislative term,in 2012,Pampiri-Bothman was elected for the first time to the Central Committee of the SACP, [8] and,even after retreating from frontline legislative politics,she remained a member of the committee,gaining re-election in 2017 and 2022. [9]
Madoda Sambatha is a South African politician serving as the North West MEC for Health since 2018. He has served as a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress (ANC) since 2014. He was the MEC for Public Works and Roads from 2014 to 2017. Sambatha is also the provincial secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP).
Mmoloki Saviour Cwaile is a South African politician who served as the North West MEC for Cooperative Governance,Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs from November 2020 to August 2021. A member of the African National Congress,he has been a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature since February 2019. Cwaile had previously served as the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Premier,Finance,Cooperative Governance,Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs in the legislature.
Happy Joyce Mashamba was a South African politician and veteran of the African National Congress (ANC). At the time of her death,she was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture and Rural Development in the provincial government of Limpopo. She was also a member of the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party and a former member of the ANC National Executive Committee and the ANC Women's League National Executive Committee.

The Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are appointed from among the members of the North West Provincial Legislature by the Premier of the North West,an office held since September 2021 by Bushy Maape of the African National Congress (ANC).
Thamsanqa China Dodovu is a South African politician who is currently serving as a Delegate to the National Council of Provinces since May 2019. He was formerly the Mayor of Klerksdorp's Matlosana Local Municipality and served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Local Government and Traditional Affairs in the North West provincial government from May 2012 until June 2013. Dodovu is a member of the African National Congress and served as the party's Deputy Provincial Chairperson in the North West from 2011 to 2015.
Sebonta Desbo Mohono is a South African politician who is currently serving as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture and Rural Development since December 2018. Since 2009,she has served continuously in the North West Provincial Legislature and the Executive Council of the North West,including as MEC for Tourism from 2014 to 2018.
Mmaphefo Lucy "Wendy" Matsemela is a South African politician who was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in the North West from May 2019 to December 2022. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2022. While in the provincial legislature,she served almost continuously in the North West Executive Council,excepting two gaps from 2010 to 2013 and from 2016 to 2018. She resigned from the provincial legislature in December 2022 after Premier Bushy Maape fired her as an MEC.
Bulelwa Tunyiswa is a South African politician who served as the Eastern Cape's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports,Recreation,Arts and Culture from May 2018 to May 2019. Before that,she was the Deputy Speaker of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2010 to 2018. She lost her position on the Executive Council after the 2019 general election,when she failed to gain re-election to the provincial legislature. A member of the African National Congress (ANC),Tunyiswa has also been a member of the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party (SACP) since 2012.
Mandla Makupula was a South African politician who served as the Eastern Cape's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) from November 2010 until his death in October 2018. He had represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since 1999.
Onewang Rebecca Kasienyane was a South African politician who served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health and Social Development from May 2009 to November 2010. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature from May 2009 until her death in April 2013. Before that,she was a Member of the National Assembly from 1999 to 2009. She was also a prominent leader of the ANC Women's League in the North West.
Rachel Nomonde Rasmeni is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Council of Provinces from 2009 to 2014 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2009. Under Premier Edna Molewa,she served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health from 2005 to 2009 and as MEC for Social Development from 2004 to 2005. She also served on the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party between 2007 and 2017.
Tebogo Constance Modise is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Council of Provinces since May 2019. She formerly served in the North West Executive Council between November 2010 and January 2016,when she resigned from the North West Provincial Legislature to become Mayor of Ratlou Local Municipality.
Mosetsanagape Margaret Mokomele-Mothibi is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2014,when she failed to gain re-election. She served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development,Women,Children and People with Disabilities from November 2010 to June 2013 under Premier Thandi Modise. She was fired from the Executive Council after she admitted that she had used public funds to attend the ANC's 52nd National Conference in December 2012.
Louisa Lorato Mabe is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2014. She served as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance from 2009 to 2012 and as MEC for Education from 2012 to 2013. Premier Thandi Modise fired her from the Executive Council in June 2013 after she was accused of involvement in procurement irregularities.
Jerry Dimotana Thibedi is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2010 to 2019 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2009. He was the inaugural Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature between 1994 and 1999 and subsequently served in the North West Executive Council between 1999 and 2009 under Premiers Popo Molefe and Edna Molewa.
Oabetswe Johannes Tselapedi was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature. He served as the second Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature from 1999 to 2004 and then as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education from 2004 until November 2010,when he was fired by newly elected Premier Thandi Modise. He also served as Deputy Provincial Chairperson of the ANC in the North West from 1996 to 1998. He was serving as a local councillor in Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality at the time of his death in 2021.
Howard Debeza Yawa is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature and North West Executive Council. Under Premier Edna Molewa,he served as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works from April 2004 until May 2007 and as MEC for Local Government and Housing from May 2007 until May 2009. After the 2009 general election,he served as MEC for Public Safety under Premier Maureen Modiselle. He was fired from the latter position in November 2010 by Modiselle's successor,Thandi Modise.
Boitumelo Shadrack Tshwene is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature. He also served in the North West Executive Council under Premiers Maureen Modiselle and Thandi Modise from May 2009 to May 2012.
Raphael Leroi "Mahlakeng" Mahlakeng is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West Provincial Legislature until 2019. He served in the North West Executive Council as Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works,Roads and Transport from May 2009 to May 2012 until Premiers Maureen Modiselle and Thandi Modise.
Hlomane Patrick Chauke is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2010 and later from 2016 to 2019. In the interim,he served in the North West Provincial Legislature from 2010 to 2014,including as the North West's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports,Arts and Culture from November 2010 to May 2012 until Premier Thandi Modise. He failed to gain re-election to the National Assembly in the 2019 general election.
