Graffiti Composition is an album by Christian Marclay. It began as a street installation in 1996 before being converted into a score and recorded. The album was released by Dog W/A Bone on August 17, 2010.
In 1996 the Berlin Academy of Arts commissioned Marclay for the Sonambiente sound art festival. [1] He plastered 5,000 blank posters of sheet music throughout the city. [2] Marclay stated that he was "not only interested in breaking the tradition within the music or whatever I'm making, but also bringing it into a different location, to a new audience." [3]
Most of the posters were plastered over or torn down. [4] With those that remained, passers-by added fragments of musical notation, drawings, writing, graffiti, and abstract marks. [3] The properly written music included scales, waltzes, and drinking songs. Participants sometimes modified each other's writings or made jokes such as an instruction to "repeat yourself until your friends are embarrassed." [3] Marclay and an assistant returned to photograph the scores. [5] 800 photographs of the posters were produced, and 150 were selected for the score. [6] The Deutsche Bank Collection purchased the photographs in 2011. [7]
Graffiti Composition was previewed at LSO St Luke's on March 22, 2005. [6] Steve Beresford conducted a nine-piece ensemble of strings, brass, guitar, piano, harp, and percussion. [8] [9]
The album was recorded on September 13, 2006 during a performance at the Museum of Modern Art. [10] Curator Eva Respini organized the event. [11] Elliott Sharp selected images to fit the style of each musician and conducted the group. [2] The group consisted of Vernon Reid, Mary Halvorson, and Lee Ranaldo on guitar; Melvin Gibbs on bass guitar; and Sharp on eight-string bass guitar. [1] Each musician had a stopwatch so that the performance would last 40 minutes. [12] Graffiti Composition was released in 2010 by the Dog W/A Bone label, run by the Paula Cooper Gallery. The release was timed to coincide with an exhibition of Marclay's work at the Whitney Museum. [2] There, Sharp performed the work with pipa player Min Xiaofen. [13]
When Beresford previewed the composition, The Guardian denounced it as "offensive" and commented that the performance sounded "like every other left-field collage of scrape and hoot cobbled together to bolster the elitism of a tiny audience." [8] The Times was impressed by its "poise and clarity" but said that it lacked energy. [9]
After the album's release, Pitchfork Media said that it "rarely coheres into something larger than a collection of sonic events" and described the result as "uneven". [14] PopMatters joked that "your enjoyment of my review might be increased if you understand that it is comprised of words randomly contributed by other people. Mayonnaise." [12]
Lee Mark Ranaldo is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter, best known as a co-founder of the rock band Sonic Youth. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Ranaldo at number 33 on its "Greatest Guitarists of All Time" list. In May 2012, Spin published a staff-selected top 100 guitarist list, ranking Ranaldo and his Sonic Youth bandmate Thurston Moore together at number 1.

Truelove's Gutter is the sixth studio album from musician Richard Hawley, released on 21 September 2009 in the UK and on 22 September 2009 in the US. The album title refers to an ancient street in Hawley's native Sheffield, now thought to be the location of present-day Castle Street, which was allegedly named after 18th-century innkeeper Thomas Truelove, who used to charge local people to dump their rubbish in the gutter in the street that then flowed down to the River Don. Thematically, Truelove's Gutter is Hawley's darkest album to date. Hawley told the BBC that the album was inspired by particularly dark periods in his life and those of others. The album features some uncommon instrumentation, such as the waterphone, megabass, and cristal baschet.

Destroyer is a Canadian indie rock band from Vancouver, formed in 1995. The band is fronted by founding member Dan Bejar, with a collective of regular band members and collaborators joining him in the studio and during live performances. Alongside Bejar, Destroyer currently includes longtime producers John Collins (bass) and David Carswell (guitar), Nicolas Bragg, Ted Bois (keyboards), JP Carter (trumpet) and Joshua Wells (drums).
English Graffiti is the third studio album by English rock band The Vaccines. It was produced by Dave Fridmann, with co-production from Cole M. Greif-Neill at Fridmann's New York studio. The album was released on 25 May 2015 through Columbia Records and charted at #2 upon release. The album marked the band's first release in two years, following the Melody Calling EP, and their first full studio album release in three, following Come of Age in 2012. Young stated that Fridmann was chosen due to both his track record in making "consistently fantastic records". It is the last album recorded with drummer Pete Robertson, who left the band after completing their 2016 U.S. tour.
Record Without a Cover is an album by artist Christian Marclay. It was released in 1985 by Recycled Records. An improvised sound collage, the album was sold as an LP record with no cover or protective packaging, such that the damage from shipping, storing, and playing the record becomes a part of the work.
Potty Mouth was an American pop rock band, formed in Western Massachusetts, in 2011 at Smith College. The band's original lineup was Ally Einbinder (bass), Phoebe Harris, Abby Weems, and Victoria Mandanas (drums). Following Harris' departure, Potty Mouth continued as a three-piece, with Abby Weems on lead guitar.
