Grant Brits (born 11 August 1987) is a South African-born competition swimmer who represented Australia at various international championship events including at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where he secured an Olympic bronze medal. Brits later worked in investment banking and finance, and as of 2018 ran the superannuation fund Superestate. [1]

Swimming career

Beijing Olympics 2008

Brits was selected in the squad for the 4 × 200-metre freestyle relay for the 2008 Summer Olympics. He helped Australia qualify sixth in the heats where he was the fastest of the four heats swimmers. This effort resulted in the selectors deciding to retain him for the final of the 4 × 200-metre freestyle relay. He swam the third leg of the relay, the Australians managed to secure a surprise bronze in the event; handing Brits his first Olympic Medal.

Other Swimming Achievements

Brits also held a world record. In 2007 Brits was part of the team that set a new world record the 4 × 200 metre freestyle short-course relay. They completed the course in 6 min 52.66 s.

At the 2007 World Aquatics Championships in Melbourne, Brits competed in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. He swam the third leg in the heats, posting a time of 1 min 48.73 s to help Australia qualify second fastest for the final. He retained his position for the final, where he again swam the third leg. He maintained third place throughout his leg, and ended with a silver medal when Kenrick Monk overtook his Canadian counterpart on the anchor leg.

Brits' mother, Jeanette, swam for South Africa in the 1970s.

Professional career

Grant Brits completed a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Applied Finance at Macquarie University. After University Brits began his professional career in Investment Banking.

Robert George Windle is an Australian freestyle swimmer of the 1960s, who won four Olympic medals, including an individual gold medal. Windle won the 1500 m freestyle and took bronze in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and silver and bronze in the 4 × 200 m and 4 × 100 m freestyle relays respectively at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Known for his versatility, he is the only male swimmer to represent Australia at the Olympics in all freestyle distances from 100 m to 1500 m. During his career, Windle set six world records and won six Commonwealth Games gold medals. He won 19 Australian championships in all distances from 220 yd to 1650 yd.

Kevin O'Halloran was an Australian freestyle swimmer of the 1950s who won a gold medal in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne.

Nicholas David Ffrost is an Australian freestyle swimmer and relay veteran who has contributed to the Australian 4×200-metre freestyle relay to capture 8 international medals. He was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. Ffrost's first international meet was the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Ffrost competed in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay. He swam the first leg in the final to help Australia win the bronze medal. He went on to make the final in the individual 200-metre freestyle, finishing 8th place. He placed 11th in the 400-metre freestyle semi-finals, but did not advance to the finals.

Pernille Blume is a former Danish swimmer specializing in sprint freestyle events. She competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics. At the 2016 Summer Olympics she was the gold medalist in the women's 50 metre freestyle and won a bronze medal in the women's 4 × 100 metre medley relay where she swam the freestyle leg of the relay in both the prelims and the final. She also competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the 50 metre freestyle.

With four gold and three bronze medals she was the most decorated athlete across all sports at the 2020 Summer Olympics, and tied for the most medals won by a woman in a single Olympic Games. Ryan Held is an American freestyle swimmer who specializes in the sprint events, and is currently sponsored by Arena. Ariarne Elizabeth Titmus, is an Australian swimmer. She is the reigning Olympic champion in the women's 200-metre and 400-metre freestyle, having won both events at the 2020 Summer Olympics, and the world record holder in the long course 400-metre freestyle event. In 2019 and 2020, she competed representing the Cali Condors in the International Swimming League.

Kristóf Milák is a Hungarian swimmer. He is the current holder of the world record in the long course 200 metre butterfly and the European record in the long course 100 metre butterfly. Zachary "Zach" Douglas Apple is a retired American competitive swimmer who specializes in the sprint freestyle events. He used to swim for DC Trident in the International Swimming League. He won his first Olympic gold medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics, swimming in the prelims and the final of the event, and later in the same Olympic Games won a gold medal and helped set a new world record and Olympic record in the 4x100-meter medley relay, swimming the freestyle leg of the relay in the final.

Mollie Grace O'Callaghan, is an Australian swimmer. She was the 2023 world champion in the women's 100m and 200m freestyle individual events, and part of the world champion 4 × 100 m and 4 × 200 m Australian women's relay teams together with 4 × 100 m mixed relay team. As of July 2023 she is the world record holder in the women's individual 200m freestyle.

Meg Harris, is an Australian swimmer. She is a world record holder in the 4×100 metre freestyle relay. She competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics, where she won a gold medal in the 4×100 metre freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay. She also won an individual gold medal at the 2017 Bahamas Commonwealth Youth Games in the 50 freestyle. She is also the co-founder of the clothing brand Dally&Co Label.

Lani Pallister is an Australian competitive swimmer. She is a world record holder in two sports, with a world record in swimming, the short course 4×200-metre freestyle relay, and world records in life saving for the youth age group in the 100-metre rescue medley and 200-metre super lifesaver. She holds the Oceanian, Commonwealth, and Australian records in the short course 1500-metre freestyle and the Australian record in the short course 800-metre freestyle. She is the first female World Short Course champion in the 1500-metre freestyle, winning the inaugural event for women at the 2022 edition. Over the course of the 2022 World Short Course Championships, she won the gold medal in each of the four events she contested.

Trenton Jeffrey Julian is an American competitive swimmer. He is a world record holder in the short course 4×200 meter freestyle relay and 4×100 meter medley relay. He won a gold medal in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2019 World University Games. He followed up with gold medals in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2021 World Short Course Championships, 2022 World Aquatic Championships, and 2022 World Short Course Championships. In the 4×100 meter medley relay, he won a world title and gold medal at the 2022 World Short Course Championships, swimming butterfly on each the prelims and finals relay.
