Gravelly Hill is an area of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Location

Gravelly Hill is approximately 4 miles north-east of Birmingham city centre. To the north-west is Perry Barr and to the north-east are Stockland Green, Erdington and Sutton Coldfield. Aston is to the west and Washwood Heath lies to the south. The housing in the area is mostly Victorian and pre-war with some recent developments of modern apartments. Housing in the area is popular with students (particularly those attending Aston University) given its good transport links to the main campus.

The Gravelly Hill Interchange, also known as Spaghetti Junction, provides the intersection between the A38(M) Aston Expressway from the centre of Birmingham to the M6 motorway. The complex junction also supports local roads joining the two motorways. The design of the intersection was also made complex by the presence of two railway lines including a high speed electrified railway and the existence of three canals including a turning basin, and two rivers.

The area has a number of industrial units in variable condition. One of them, Gravelly Industrial Park, is among the city's largest industrial estates. Companies with units in the park include Carlsberg, which distributes to regional accounts and national depots.

Gravelly Hill railway station is part of the Cross-City Line.

Local government

Gravelly Hill is a ward of Birmingham City Council [1] ; until 2018 it was part of Stockland Green ward. However it was previously a ward in its own right and also formed part of the Erdington Constituency. The previous ward was occasionally won by the Conservatives, with the mother of current Conservative Councillor for Erdington Robert Alden, narrowly losing the seat in 1976 elections. His father was parliamentary candidate in 1975-79 for the area, gaining one of the largest swings in the country in 1979.

The A5127 is a major road in England which runs between Birmingham and Lichfield, Staffordshire. Salford Junction

Salford Junction is the canal junction of the Grand Union and Tame Valley Canals with the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. It is in the north of the administrative city of Birmingham, England and historically marked a tripoint between two divisions of Aston to the south and Erdington to the north. It is directly east of most of the Gravelly Hill Interchange. With Aston and Bordesley Junctions it forms a circuit, at the heart of Birmingham's thirty-five miles of canals.

Bromford is an industrial and residential area of Birmingham, situated between Ward End, Alum Rock, Hodge Hill, Washwood Heath, Shard End, Stechford, Castle Bromwich and Tyburn. The industrial area is predominantly situated on the north side of the M6 motorway, including The Bromford Gate industrial park, Fort Shopping Park, and Fort Dunlop, with one industrial site sitting east of the M6 called Bromford Central. The residential area sits adjacent to the East of the M6 comprising two neighbourhoods, Bromford built along Bromford Drive, and The Firs built along Chipperfield Road. The industrial and residential areas have increasingly become two separate distinguishable places, and not recognised locally as joined or one. This is signified by the M6 & River Tame dividing the two areas, poor public transport links between the two areas, and the areas sitting within three different local authority wards, and two parliamentary constituencies (industrial area situated within Birmingham Erdington and residential area situated within Birmingham Hodge Hill.
