Greater Amman Municipality is the arm of local government responsible for the administration of the Jordanian capital of Amman. [1]

History

First municipal council in Amman was established in 1909 under the Ottoman Empire. The local inhabitants elected Ismael Babouk, a Circassian aristocrat, for the mayorship position.

The current mayor of GAM is Yousef Shawarbeh who was appointed to the position in 2017.

The foreign relations of Jordan have consistently followed a pro-Western foreign policy and traditionally Jordan has had close relations with the United States and the United Kingdom. Queen Alia International Airport

Queen Alia International Airport is Jordan's main and largest airport and is located in Zizya 30 kilometres (20 mi) south of the capital city, Amman. It is named after Queen Alia, who died in a helicopter crash in 1977. The airport is home to the country's national flag carrier, Royal Jordanian Airlines and serves as a major hub for Jordan Aviation.

Black September, also known as the Jordanian Civil War was a conflict fought in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan between the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF), under the leadership of King Hussein, and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), under the leadership of Yasser Arafat, primarily between 16 and 27 September 1970, with certain aspects of the conflict continuing until 17 July 1971.

Al-Wehdat SC

Al-Wehdat Sports Club is a Jordanian sports club founded in 1956. The club is based in and represents the Amman New Camp, a Palestinian refugee camp which is also known as Al-Wehdat. Al-Wehdat's home games are played at King Abdullah II Stadium, also known as the Stadium of fire and victory. There are several other sports offered in the club, such as volleyball, and basketball.

Sahab, Jordan City in Amman Governorate, Jordan

Sahab is a municipality in Jordan located 16 kilometers (9.9 mi) southeast of the capital Amman. It is the only locality in the Sahab District of the Amman Governorate. Modern Sahab began as a Bedouin-owned plantation village in the late 19th century during Ottoman rule. The plantation was originally worked by Egyptian migrant farmers who purchased and permanently settled the lands in 1894 and developed Sahab into an agricultural estate. Sahab became its own municipality in 1962 and today is a densely populated industrial hub. It is home to the country's largest industrial city, the Abdullah II Ibn Al-Hussein Industrial Estate, and the largest cemetery in greater Amman, as well as the Caves of Raqeem site mentioned in the Qur'an. The population of Sahab in 2015 was 169,434.

2011–2012 Jordanian protests

The Jordanian protests were a series of protests in Jordan that began in January 2011, and resulted in the firing of the cabinet ministers of the government. In its early phase, protests in Jordan were initially against unemployment, inflation, corruption. along with demanding for real constitutional monarchy and electoral reforms.

Prostitution in Jordan is technically illegal, but in practice, tolerated, with authorities turning a blind eye to the act. Prostitution occurs mainly in the larger cities and around refugee camps. It occurs in brothels, restaurants, night clubs and on the streets. The prostitutes are mainly from Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria, Iraq and Palestine as well as Jordanians.

Nasser Judeh

Senator Nasser S. Judeh is a Jordanian politician who served as Jordan's longest serving Minister of Foreign Affairs, having served between 2009 and 2017 in eight consecutive governments. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister of Jordan from 2015 to 2017. He currently serves as a senator in the Jordanian Upper House of Parliament.

2018 AFC Womens Asian Cup

The 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup was the 19th edition of the AFC Women's Asian Cup, the quadrennial international football tournament in Asia competed by the women's national teams in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). It was originally scheduled to be held in Jordan between 7 and 22 April 2018, but later was changed to 6 to 20 April 2018.

Capital punishment is a legal penalty in Jordan. The country had a moratorium on capital punishment between 2006 and 2014. In late 2014 the moratorium was lifted and 11 persons were executed. Two more executions followed in 2015 and 15 executions took place in 2017.

2017 Jordanian local elections

On 15 August 2017, Jordan held local elections for three levels of government: mayoralties, municipal and local councils, and governorate councils.
