In mathematics, a group is a set equipped with a binary operation which combines any two elements to form a third element in such a way that four conditions called group axioms are satisfied, namely closure, associativity, identity and invertibility. One of the most familiar examples of a group is the set of integers together with the addition operation, but groups are encountered in numerous areas within and outside mathematics, and help focusing on essential structural aspects, by detaching them from the concrete nature of the subject of the study.

Harold Scott MacDonald "Donald" Coxeter, FRS, FRSC, was a British-born Canadian geometer. Coxeter is regarded as one of the greatest geometers of the 20th century. He was born in London, received his BA (1929) and PhD (1931) from Cambridge, but lived in Canada from age 29. He was always called Donald, from his third name MacDonald. He was most noted for his work on regular polytopes and higher-dimensional geometries. He was a champion of the classical approach to geometry, in a period when the tendency was to approach geometry more and more via algebra.

Serge Lang mathematician

Serge Lang was a French-American mathematician and activist who taught at Yale University for most of his career. He is known for his work in number theory and for his mathematics textbooks, including the influential Algebra. He received the Frank Nelson Cole Prize in 1960 and was a member of the Bourbaki group. As an activist, he campaigned successfully against the nomination of the political scientist Samuel P. Huntington to the National Academies of Science, and later descended into AIDS denialism, claiming that HIV had not been proven to cause AIDS and protesting Yale's research into HIV/AIDS.
