Guirim is a census town in North Goa in the Indian state of Goa. For administrative purposes, however, it is considered to be a village, and has a village panchayat, which is the local administration of a village in parts of India. Guirim is located on the outskirts of the North Goa main commercial city of Mapusa (also spelt as Mapsa or Mapuca). It is the last village along the Panjim-Mapusa highway that one encounters prior to reaching Mapusa.
Guirim has an area of 4.03 square kilometres, and a total of 1,178 households. [1] Its population totals 5.036 (according to the 2011 official Census) which comprises 2,502 males and 2,534 females. [1] Its under-six population in 2011 was a total of 493 children, comprising 258 boys and 235 girls. [1]
The village is also known as Girvoddea in the local Konkani language. Gurim has been home to the prominent St. Anthony's High School, run by the Goa Capuchin Friars and is located on a hillock that overlooks the agrarian village whose geography is dominated by paddy fields.
The village cemetery has, prominently written on its entrance, the text in Konkani which is meant to be a reminder of our own limited nature, Aiz Mhaka, Falea Tuka, which means, "Today it's my turn. Tomorrow yours."
St Anthony's at Guirum, the prominent local school, is run in the English-medium. [2] It was earlier a boys-only school though now is a mixed school catering to both boys and girls.
The school was conceived by the Capuchins in 1936 and became a reality in 1941. [2] This Catholic religious order was planning to build their residence at Peddem, on the other side of Mapusa, when Fr. Hippolito da Luna (1909-1942), director of the Collegio de Santo Antonio boarding school offered to hand over to them the school, boarding, Chapel and adjoining property on the hill to the Capuchins. [2]
The Capuchins took over the school in May 1942. [2] It was set up with the aim of offering the youth of Goa sound and quality and all-round education through literary, moral, religious, emotional and physical education. [2] This school is open to all. Its motto in Latin is Ad Ardua (towards higher, greater achievements). [2] Every year 45 students get scholarships and 90 freeships are given for hardworking students. [2]
This has been one of the prominent schools in Bardez, with a particularly strong reputation for its prowess in sports, particularly football and hockey around the second half of the 20th century.
Guirim is located at 15°33′48″N73°48′55″E / 15.563419°N 73.815237°E . [3] It has an average elevation of 7 metres (23 feet).
As of 2001 [update] India census, [4] Guirim had a population of 6371. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Guirim has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 75%, and female literacy is 65%. In Guirim, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
During the heavy monsoons of June 2020, some fields of Guirim were reported flooded. [5] A flyover on the road highway cutting through Guirim was inaugurated in July 2020. [6] Citizens, green campaigners, youth and local farmers sought to resuscitate coconut trees near the Guirim underpass in 2020. [7] [8] [9] In February 2020, an issue broke out over the illegal mud-filling of Guirim lands and fields. [10]
Panaji is the capital of the Indian state of Goa and the headquarters of North Goa district. Previously, it was the territorial capital of the former Portuguese India. It lies on the banks of the Mandovi river estuary in the Tiswadi sub-district (taluka). North Goa district is one of the two districts that constitutes the state of Goa, India. Nachinola is a small village in North Goa district, Goa, India. It is situated in Bardez taluka (sub-district) between the villages Moira and Aldona. Nachinola is divided into three vadde that are called Vainguinn, Zoidar, and Borvonn. For administrative purposes, Panarim, a vaddo of Aldona, is also considered to be a part of Nachinola. Siolim is a village in Bardez taluka, and a census town on the central west coast of India, in the North Goa district of Goa. The 2001 population was 10,311, and 10,936 in 2011. Siolim is also the name of a constituency in the Goa assembly, which includes Assagao, Anjuna and Oxel, in addition to Siolim. A person from Siolim is known as a Siolcar or even as Shivalkar.
Socorro is a village that lies five kilometres to the east of Mapusa town in Bardez taluka. It is administered by a panchayat represented by members from the seven wards of Ambirna, Arrarim, Carrem, Maina, Porvorim, Vaddem and Zosvaddo. It is also considered as a census town in North Goa district in the Indian state of Goa. It once formed part of the comunidade and the larger village of Serula. Serula has since been divided into the villages of Salvador do Mundo, Penha da Franca(Britona), Pomburpa and Socorro. The village takes its name from the patron saint or deity of its parish church, our Lady of Succour or Nossa Senhora do Socorro.
Mapusa River is one of the main tributaries of the River Mandovi in Goa, India. The river originates from the jungles of Dumacem and Amthane, meanders eastward and then southward before it drains itself in the Mandovi river at Penha de France. Mapusa River has separated Corjuem from mainland Aldona. The Assonora River is the main tributary of Mapusa River. It is situated 12 km from the mapusa city which is a capital of the Bardez taluka and is one of the largest towns of Goa. It flows 20 kilometres in western direction. Penha de Franca church is situated on the junction of the River Mapusa and River Mandovi. Mapusa is the largest town located on the banks of the river.
Velim, formerly Velliapura, is a large village situated in Salcete, neighbouring Quepem taluka, and falls under South Goa district, in the coastal state of Goa. It has access to the Arabian Sea via the Sal river that flows through it and shares its borders with neighbouring villages and towns of Assolna, Ambelim, Betul, and Cuncolim. The village consists of 22 hamlets or subdivisions which have been organized into 9 wards. As of 2020, the village has a total population of about 8600 residents residing in 2568 households. It is a part of the Velim Assembly constituency.
Raia is a quaint village in the Salcete taluka of South Goa district, Goa state, India. It is located 4 km (2.5 mi) east from the district headquarters of Margao and 35 km (22 mi) from the state capital Panjim.
Ucassaim is a village in Bardez, in the west coastal region of Goa. It is located close to Mapusa town and is known as the home for some prominent persons from the area. Ucassaim was once is known as Mistirincho Ganv, because of the number of musicians (mistri) who flourished in this village.

St. Jerome Church is a parish of the Catholic Church in Mapusa, Goa, India, in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. It is dedicated to the Church Father St. Jerome. The church also holds the shrine of Our Lady of Miracles and the feast day of Miracles is thronged by thousands of devotees every year.
Nagoa is a village in the Bardez sub-district of Goa, and lies between the North Goa headquarters town of Mapusa and the tourist-destination and former fishing village of Calangute. It is not to be mixed-up with a village of the same name which lies in the South Goa sub-district of Salcete.
