Gundlakamma Reservoir Project (officially Kandula Obula Reddy Gundlakamma Reservoir Project) is an irrigation project across the Gundlakamma river located in Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, India. The dam, with 3.859 billion cubic feet of live storage capacity. [1] [2] [3]

At the time of its inauguration in 2008, only 15,000 acres out of the total envisaged area of 80,000 could be irrigated due to issues in land acquisition for constructing canals. [4] [5] As of 2024 land acquisition issues continue to dog the project preventing full utilisation, as some of the affected farmers did not agree to the compensation fixed by the government.

Design

It is planned to use 12.845 TMC of water through filling the reservoir 6 times during the monsoon season to provide irrigation facilities to 62,368 acres in Khariff and 80,060 acres in Rabi seasons in 6 mandals of Prasakam district. It is also planned to provide drinking water facility to 2.56 lakh population in 43 villages enroute canals and to Ongole town.

The reservoir consists of earthen dam with a length of 5.699 km, 227 meters long spillway with 15 vertical gates. The crest level of gates is +16.38 M for a maximum flood discharge of 2,72,000 cusecs. Right canal with take off at 3.785 Km of right bund for a length of 27.26 Km feeds an ayacut of 28,000 acres. Left canal with take off at 0.9 Km of left bund for a length of 21.975 km feeds an ayacut of 52,060 acres. [1]

Land acquisition issues

As of 2024 land acquisition issues continue to dog the project preventing full utilisation, as some of the affected farmers did not agree to the compensation fixed by the government. [6]

Maintenance

Two crest gates of the reservoir developed leaks in 2023,leading to loss of water and also damage to ayacut crops, as water was released suddenly to manage the crisis. [7]

Subsequently there was other issues like state bifurcation came to high intensity, subsequent Chief Ministers failed to give priority for Jalayagnam.

The Polavaram Project is an under construction multi-purpose irrigation project on the Godavari River in the Eluru District and East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh. The project has been accorded National project status by the Central Government of India. Its reservoir back water spreads up to the Dummugudem Anicut and approx 115 km on Sabari River side. Thus back water spreads into parts of Chhattisgarh and Odisha States. It gives major boost to tourism sector in Godavari Districts as the reservoir covers the famous Papikonda National Park, Polavaram hydro electric project (HEP) and National Waterway 4 are under construction on left side of the river. It is located 40 km to the upstream of Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage in Rajamahendravaram City and 25 km from Rajahmundry Airport.

The Pulichintala Project is a multi-purpose water management project for irrigation, hydropower generation, and flood control in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is a crucial irrigation facility for farmers in four coastal districts: West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Palanadu, and Prakasam, covering over 13 lakh acres. It has 24 gates and a balancing reservoir with a capacity of 46 Tmcft at 175 feet (53 m) MSL full reservoir level (FRL).

Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi project is the longest water canal project in the region of Rayalaseema, Andhra Pradesh, India. The project was conceived to provide a reliable irrigation and drinking water supply for the region through drawing flood waters from the Srisailam reservoir.

"Tatipudi Reservoir" is a dam located on River Gosthani in Andhra Pradesh. It is a water supply reservoir to the city of Visakhapatnam. Thatipudi Reservoir Project was constructed across Gosthani River during 1963–1968. The Project is aimed to irrigate a total ayacut of 15,378 acres (62 km2) in Vizianagaram District and to provide drinking water to Visakhapatnam City. The Project utilizes 3.325 tmcft of the available water and the reservoir storage capacity is about 3 tmcft. The Cost of the project is Rs. 1,820 crores. The Ayacut of 15,378 acres (62 km2) has been stabilised in Gantyada, S.Kota and Jami Mandals of Vizianagaram District.

Kurnool Cuddappah Canal popularly known as K.C. Canal is an irrigation canal located in Kurnool and Kadapa districts in Andhra Pradesh, India.

Jeedipalli Reservoir is an irrigation project located in Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh, India. It receives water from Handri-Neeva canal which draws water from Srisailam reservoir. It is located in Jeedipalli village of Beluguppa mandal.


The Veligonda Project is an irrigation project located in Markapur, Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, India. When completed, the project will provide irrigational facilities to 447,000 acres and drinking water to 1.5 million people in 30 Mandals of fluoride and drought affected areas in Prakasam district, Nellore district and Kadapa district by diverting 43.5 TMC of floodwater from the Krishna River from foreshore of Srisailam Reservoir near Kollamvagu and proposed to store in Nallamalasagar Reservoir. The water for the project is drawn through two 18.8 km long tunnels across Nallamala hills. The project has been renamed to the "Poola Subbaiah Irrigation Project". It displaces around 20,946 families. The oustees have protested for enhanced compensation over the years and many have not received the compensation promised to them.


Kandula Obul Reddy, popularly known as Obul Reddy was an Indian politician. He held prominent roles throughout his career, serving as the General Secretary of the Congress for Madras State and later as a Cabinet Minister in 1955 and as Minister for Major Irrigation in 1978 in Andhra Pradesh. Gandikota Reservoir is an irrigation project located across Penna River of Andhra Pradesh in the Indian state. It receives water from Galeru Nagari Sujala Sravanthi Project canal. It is located between Gandikota village and Kondapur village of Kadapa district.

Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Project is a river interlinking project which connects Godavari River to Krishna River. This project has thereby become the first of such irrigation type projects in the country to be completed in time without any budget enhancements. It also holds a record in Limca Book of Records. The project was Inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Nara Chandrababu Naidu in March 2016 while the project was completed in one year record of time.

Jogulamba Barrage is a proposed barrage across Krishna River with full pond level (FPL) 274m. It would be located at Veltoor village, Peddamandadi mandal, Wanaparthy district, Telangana, India. This barrage is proposed to divert 3 TMC of water via lift to Yedula Reservoir being built as part of Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme. This would also provide water for Dindi Lift Irrigation Project and Mahatma Gandhi Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme.
