Gunner Trey Kiel (born July 23, 1993) is a former American football quarterback. He played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and later for the Cincinnati Bearcats.
Kiel attended Columbus East High School in Columbus, Indiana. He played on the Columbus East football team. As a senior in 2011, he won the Indiana Mr. Football Award. [1]
Kiel was considered the best quarterback recruit in the nation by the Rivals.com and Scout.com recruiting networks. [2] [3]
Kiel originally committed to Indiana University, before decommitting and committing to Louisiana State University. He then decommitted and officially enrolled at the University of Notre Dame on January 17, 2012. [4]
After spending the 2012 season on the depth chart behind Everett Golson, Tommy Rees, and Andrew Hendrix, Kiel announced his decision to transfer from Notre Dame. [5]
On April 10, 2013, Kiel announced he would transfer to the University of Cincinnati for the 2013 season. After sitting out the 2013 season as required by NCAA transfer rules, Kiel made his college debut on September 12, 2014, against the Toledo Rockets. He threw six touchdown passes in that game, the most by an FBS quarterback in a first game. [6] Kiel finished the season with 3,254 passing yards, second most in the American Athletic Conference. [7] His 31 touchdown passes led the conference and tied the school record. [7] [8] Kiel was 18 yards short of tying the Cincinnati school record for single season passing yards when he exited the Military Bowl in the third quarter with a head injury. [9]
Kiel began the 2015 season as Cincinnati's starter. He was plagued with injuries throughout the year, being replaced by backup Hayden Moore on several occasions. Kiel missed two games after being hospitalized with a head injury in Cincinnati's game against Memphis. [10] He did not travel with the team to their bowl game in Hawaii, citing personal problems. [11]
Prior to the 2016 season, Cincinnati head coach, Tommy Tuberville, announced that Kiel, now a fifth-year senior, would be the third-string quarterback behind sophomore Hayden Moore (starter) and redshirt freshman Ross Trail (second-string). [12] On October 20, Kiel was named the starter for Cincinnati's homecoming game against East Carolina after Hayden Moore went down with injury. [13] He started the next three games but was benched again when Moore returned from injury. [14]

Gunner's uncle, Blair Kiel (1961–2012), was a quarterback at Notre Dame and played in the National Football League, [16] His brother Drew Kiel was QB for Illinois State, and brother Dusty Kiel was a QB for Indiana University.
Brayden Tyler "Brady" Quinn is an American former football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for seven seasons. He played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, where he won the Maxwell Award. Quinn was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Following three seasons in Cleveland, he was traded to the Denver Broncos, where he played for two seasons. Quinn spent his last three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, the New York Jets, and the St. Louis Rams for one year each.

Blair Armstrong Kiel was an American professional football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL), Canadian Football League (CFL), and Arena Football League (AFL). He was a four-year starting quarterback and punter in college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 1980 to 1983. He was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1998. Kiel worked as an advisor to corporate real estate clients in the Indianapolis area. He retired to start a non-profit organization to help young athletes plan for when their athletic careers are over.
Matthew Lawrence LoVecchio was a starting quarterback for the University of Notre Dame football team in 2000–01, and for Indiana University in 2003–04.
Trerein "Tre" E. Roberson is an American professional football defensive back for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent following the 2016 NFL Draft. He then played for the Stampeders until he signed with the Chicago Bears in 2020. Prior to entering the NFL, Roberson was a collegiate quarterback at Indiana University and Illinois State University. Roberson had a 3–4 record for his career as the starting quarterback at Indiana and a 23–5 record for Illinois State.

The team played its home games at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio due to the renovation at Nippert Stadium, which was completed at the start of the 2015 football season. The Bearcats were led by second-year head coach Tommy Tuberville. They finished the season 9–4, 7–1 in AAC play to finish in a three way tie for the America Athletic championship. They were invited to the Military Bowl where they lost to Virginia Tech.

The team returned on campus to Nippert Stadium after playing 2014 home games at Paul Brown Stadium during stadium renovation. The Bearcats were led by third-year head coach Tommy Tuberville and were members of the Eastern Division of the American Athletic Conference. They finished the season 7–6 overall and 4–4 in American Athletic lay to finish in a tie for third place in the East Division. They were invited to the Hawaii Bowl where they lost to San Diego State.
