The politics of Latvia takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic,whereby the Prime Minister is the head of government,and of a multi-party system. The President holds a primarily ceremonial role as Head of State. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament,the Saeima. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. The Economist Intelligence Unit rated Latvia a "flawed democracy" in 2019.

The Soviet Story is a 2008 documentary film about Soviet Communism and Soviet–German relations before 1941 and after,written and directed by Edvīns Šnore,and sponsored by the Union for Europe of the Nations group in the European Parliament. The film features interviews with Western and Russian historians such as Norman Davies and Boris Vadimovich Sokolov,the Russian writer Viktor Suvorov,the Soviet dissident Vladimir Bukovsky,members of the European Parliament,and participants and survivors of the Soviet terror. Sokolov later emphasized that he simply offered expert advice and told Šnore that some of the things he claimed were based on obvious falsifications.

Riga is one of the five multi-member constituencies of the Saeima,the national legislature of Latvia. The constituency was established in 1922 when the Saeima was established following Latvia's independence from the Soviet Union. It consists of the city of Riga and overseas voters. The constituency currently elects 35 of the 100 members of the Saeima using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2018 parliamentary election it had 549,137 registered electors.
