HMCS Whitethroat was a controlled minelayer based on the Isles-class naval trawler constructed for Canada in the United Kingdom during World War II. The ship was completed near the end of the war and most of its naval service was spent dismantling the defences erected during the war. In 1946 the ship was paid off and became a naval auxiliary and given the new prefix CNAV Whitethroat. As an auxiliary, Whitethroat was used a naval research platform and to repair undersea cables. Reactivated for the Korean War as a minelayer again, the vessel returned to auxiliary service on the Pacific Coast from 1954 to 1967. Whitethroat was sold for scrap in 1967.

Description

Whitethroat was built as a controlled minelayer based on the Isles-class naval trawler design. The ship had a standard displacement of 580 long tons (590 t) and 790 long tons (800 t) at full load. The vessel measured 164 feet (50.0 m) long overall and 150 feet (45.7 m) between perpendiculars with a beam of 27+12 feet (8.4 m) and a draught of 12+12 feet (3.8 m). The ship was powered by steam provided by one cylindrical boiler to a triple expansion engine rated at 850 indicated horsepower (630 kW) with a maximum speed of 12.5 knots (23.2 km/h; 14.4 mph). The vessel was armed with either one 4-inch (102 mm) anti-aircraft gun [1] or a 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon. [2]

Service history

During World War II, the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) sought to provide the port of Halifax, Nova Scotia with a defence of controlled minefields. Their solution was to acquire Sankaty, a former Staten Island ferry and convert her to a minelayer. Towards the end of the war, the RCN sought to replace the older ship which had never been entirely suitable for the role with one of modern design. [3] Whitethroat was built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell Ltd. at their yard in Beverley, East Yorkshire and was laid down on 15 May 1944 with the yard number 736. [4] The ship was launched on 6 September 1944. [1] The ship was commissioned at Beverley on 7 December 1944 and completed on 12 December. [2] [4] Whitethroat sailed to Canada as part of the convoy ONS 42 in February 1945. Upon arrival, the ship replaced Sankaty and took part in the dismantling of harbour defences following the end of the war. This took until 6 May 1946 when the ship was paid off as a warship from the RCN and made an auxiliary ship, with the prefix Canadian Naval Auxiliary Vessel (CNAV) with the hull number NPC 113 and then AGH 113. As an auxiliary vessel, Whitethroat was used to repair undersea telegraph cables and in 1950, served as a platform for oceanographic work for the Naval Research Establishment. [2] With the onset of the Korean War Whitethroat was activated as a warship and given the prefix HMCS again in April 1951 at Halifax. [2] [6] Once again a mine and loop layer, Whitethroat remained in this service until 30 September 1954 when the ship was paid off and returned to being a CNAV after the arrival of HMCS Bluethroat. In March 1955, Whitethroat sailed west to join the Pacific Naval Laboratory, of which the vessel remained a part of until 1967. There the ship was used as a research test bed along with planting the practice mines for the Canadian minesweepers. [2] [5] The ship was sold for scrap and broken up at Vancouver, British Columbia in November 1967. [4]

HMCS <i>Armentières</i>

HMCS Armentières was one of twelve Battle-class naval trawlers used by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). Armentières entered service in 1918 near the end of the First World War on the Atlantic coast of Canada. Following the war, the ship was transferred to the Department of Marine and Fisheries for a short period before reverting to RCN service in 1923 on the Pacific coast of Canada. The ship sank in 1925, was raised and re-entered service, remaining with the fleet through the Second World War as an examination vessel at Prince Rupert, British Columbia. After the end of the war, the vessel entered mercantile service becoming A.G. Garrish in 1947, later renamed Arctic Rover in 1958, Laforce in 1962 and Polaris in 1973. The ship's registry was deleted in 1991.

The vessel entered service in 1918 near the end of the First World War and was used for patrolling and escort duties along the Atlantic Coast of Canada. Following the war, Arras was transferred to the Department of Marine and Fisheries where the ship was used as a fisheries patrol vessel. Following the outbreak of the Second World War, the ship re-entered RCN service as a gate vessel. In 1943, the ship was heavily damaged by fire and was broken up in 1957.

Following the war, the trawler was sold for commercial use and renamed Inverleigh. Inverleigh was scuttled off Burgeo, Newfoundland on 30 June 1971.

HMCS Ypres was one of twelve Battle-class naval trawlers constructed for and used by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the First World War. Named after the Second and Third battles of Ypres, the ship entered service in 1918, patrolling the east coast of Canada for submarine activity. Following the war, the ship remained in service with as a patrol and training ship. In 1938, the vessel recommissioned as a gate vessel, re-designated Gate Vessel 1, in service at Halifax, Nova Scotia. On 12 May 1940, the gate vessel was rammed and sunk in a collision with the British battleship HMS Revenge.

Battle-class trawler 1917 Canadian naval trawler class

The Battle-class trawlers were a class of naval trawlers built for and used by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the First World War. Between the wars, some remained in RCN service, but most were transferred to the Department of Marine and Fisheries, where they performed a number of functions, including working as lightships and fisheries patrol vessels. During the Second World War, a number of these trawlers were re-acquired by the RCN, but all the navy's Battle-class trawlers were decommissioned soon after the war. A number of the class remained in civilian government and commercial service for years after the war, although most had been disposed of by the early 1960s.

HMCS <i>Gulnare</i>

HMCS Gulnare was a Canadian government ship that served as a patrol boat and guard vessel for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) during the First World War. Acquired by the Canadian government in 1902, Gulnare was used for fisheries patrol and hydrographic survey duties until 1914. Following the war, Gulnare was used to intercept smugglers. Returned to government service in 1920, the vessel was converted to a lightship in 1925 and sold in 1937 to private interests. The vessel was broken up for scrap in the late 1940s.

HMCS Newington was a commissioned patrol vessel of the Royal Canadian Navy that served in the First World War. Prior to the war, the ship served as a fishing trawler and lighthouse tender for the Canadian government. Following the war the vessel was returned to government service. Newington was converted to a tugboat in 1920. Sold to private interests in 1920 the ship sank on 26 August 1959 while laid up in Burrard Inlet, British Columbia.

HMCS <i>Stadacona</i>

HMCS Stadacona was a commissioned patrol boat of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) that served in the First World War and postwar until 1920. Prior to entering service with the RCN, the vessel was the private yacht Columbia. Following the war, Stadacona performed hydrographic surveys. The vessel was sold for commercial use in 1920 and was burned for salvage in 1948. Stadacona is a historic name associated with Canada, the voyages Jacques Cartier, the colony of Samuel de Champlain, and Quebec City.

HMCS <i>Curlew</i>

HMCS Curlew was a commissioned minesweeper and patrol vessel of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) that served in the First World War. Constructed in Ontario in 1892, Curlew was initially a Canadian government fisheries patrol vessel on the East Coast of Canada. In 1912, the ship was fitted as a minesweeper and in 1914, joined the RCN. Curlew spent the entire war on the East Coast of Canada. Following the war, the ship was taken out of service and sold in 1921.

<i>Sankaty</i>

Sankaty was a propeller-driven steamer that served as a ferry to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in Massachusetts; in Rockland, Maine; Stamford, Connecticut and Oyster Bay, Long Island in the United States from 1911 to 1940. During World War II, the ship was requisitioned by the Royal Canadian Navy for service as a minelayer and maintenance vessel along the Canadian Atlantic coast. Following the war the ship returned to a ferry, working the Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island and Caribou, Nova Scotia route in Canada from 1947 until 1964. While being towed to the breaker's yard, the ship sank off the coast of Nova Scotia on October 27, 1964.

The Porte-class gate vessels were a class of five boom defence vessels built in the early 1950s and operated by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and Canadian Forces (CF) during the Cold War. The class derived its name from the gates of the French fortifications of Québec and Louisbourg and was designed by the RCN as a replacement for World War I-era Battle-class trawlers used to operate anti-submarine booms during World War II. The Porte class were used primarily as training vessels during the Cold War.

CNAV Eastore was a coastal auxiliary ship in service with the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II and the Cold War. Eastore, originally constructed as the United States Army Design 381 freighter FS-554, was acquired in 1944 and entered service with the Royal Canadian Navy in December of that year. The ship was paid off on 8 April 1946 and re-entered service as a naval auxiliary (CNAV). The ship remained in service with the Royal Canadian Navy until sold on 30 July 1964.
