His Majesty's Prisons (Her Majesty's Prisons in the case of a female monarch) is the name given to prisons in the United Kingdom, as well as some in Australia and a small number in Canada, Grenada, Jersey, The Bahamas and Barbados. The title makes up part of the name of individual prisons and is usually abbreviated to HM Prison or HMP.

Australia

The title of HM Prison is given to a number of prisons in Australia, especially in the state of Victoria.

Bahamas

Fox Hill Prison in Nassau was formerly known as Her Majesty's Prisons. [1]

Barbados

The title of HM Prison was given to HMP Dodds Prison in St. Philip, until the crown was dissolved, it was also the name given to the former Glendairy Prison in Station Hill, St. Michael.

Belize

The Belize Museum was formerly a HM prison.

Canada

Her Majesty's Penitentiary (as of September 2023 the name has not changed to reflect the accession of King Charles III) [2] [3] [4] at 89 Forest Road in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador was built in 1859, and is still operational as a men's correctional facility of the Department of Justice and Public Safety of Newfoundland and Labrador. [5]

In November 2021, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador issued a request for proposals to design, build and finance a new prison to replace the aging HMP facility. [6]

Grenada

The title of His Majesty's Prison (Grenada) is given to the Richmond Hill Prison in Saint George's, Grenada. The prison is run by the Ministry of National Security. The prison governor is Dr John Mitchell, the Commissioner of Prisons in Grenada. [7] [8]

The prison accommodates both sexes, but has separate sections for male and female prisoners. [9] As of 2019 it held 463 prisoners, more than double its official capacity of 198. [7]

His Majesty's Prison Bure, more commonly known as HM Prison Bure, and often abbreviated to HMP Bure, is a Category C men's prison, located in the parish of Scottow in Norfolk, England. The prison is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service, and became operational in November 2009.

Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women (LCIW) is a prison for women with its permanent pre-2016 facility located in St. Gabriel, Louisiana, United States. It is the only female correctional facility of the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections. Elayn Hunt Correctional Center is immediately west of LCIW. LCIW includes the state's female death row. As of 2017 the prison has temporarily moved due to flooding that occurred in August 2016, and its prisoners are housed in other prisons. The administration is temporarily located in the former Jetson Youth Center near Baker. By 2021 the Baker area address was given for the prison on the LCIW website.

Bermuda Department of Corrections, formerly Her Majesty's Prison Service, Bermuda, is the agency charged with managing the prisons within the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda. It is a part of the Ministry of National Security and is headquartered in Hamilton. In 2002, the Government of Bermuda renamed the HM Prisons to Correctional Facilities. At the same time, HM Prison Service was renamed The Department of Corrections. It is the only prison/corrections force within the British Overseas Territories and United Kingdom that uses the "Corrections" title rather than the more usual "HM Prison Service" as is customary.

Her Majesty's Penitentiary (HMP), located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada is the primary facility for housing medium and maximum security male prisoners in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Office of the High Sheriff of Newfoundland and Labrador is a provincial law enforcement agency overseen by the Minister of Justice and Public Safety in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Founded in 1729, it is the oldest law enforcement agency in Canada. Sheriffs are provincial peace officers appointed under the Sheriff's Act, 1991 with authority to enforce all relevant federal and provincial acts including the criminal code throughout Newfoundland and Labrador while in the lawful execution of their duties.

Fox Hill Prison is the only prison in the Bahamas. Located in Nassau, the capital, it is operated by the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services. Fox Hill Prison has minimum, medium, and maximum security facilities for male prisoners. It also has one block for female prisoners, as well as a medical block.
