Habibganj is a suburb in Bhopal, in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. It is notable for BHEL township and the Habibganj railway station (renamed "Rani Kamalapati railway station" in November 2021 [1] ), which is the country's first private as well as first world class railway station. [2]

Etymology

In Hindustani, "Habibganj" means "Lovely village/city". It was earlier a village outside Bhopal and was named so by the then begum of the Nawab of Bhopal because the greenery and lakes here used to enhance its beauty. As Bhopal city expanded, it gradually became a suburb of Bhopal.

Transport

By road

Habibganj is located on NH 46, earlier known as Hoshangabad road, six kms from the old city of Bhopal. It is served by Bhopal city bus services. The outgoing inter-city buses also stop here.

By rail

Habibganj is served by Habibganj railway station which was renamed as "Rani Kamalapati railway station" in 2021. [1] The station is located 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) away from Bhopal Junction. It lies on the New Delhi–Chennai main line of the Indian Railways. It serves as a secondary station to Bhopal Junction railway station. 16 passenger trains originate from or terminate at this station in a week. 107 passenger trains halt at this station in a week. [3]

The railway station was redeveloped on the lines of Germany’s Heidelberg railway station and is promoted as India’s first world-class station. The station now has various facilities like large covered parking area, 24X7 power backup, drinking water, air-conditioned lobby, offices, shops, high speed escalator, lift, anchor stores, automobile showrooms, a convention centre, a hotel and a super specialty hospital. The redeveloped railway station has received GEM 5 star rating in GEM Sustainability Certification by ASSOCHAM for Green, sustainable design and eco-friendly project. The station has planned an extensive reuse of water with Zero discharge technology being utilised for sewage treatment systems. A provision of rainwater harvesting is also present at the station. To ensure clean energy, solar energy generation is implemented in the station. Around 6800 and 7300 square metres are identified for soft and hard landscaping respectively. [4]

Habibganj has a township of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). It is an Indian central public sector undertaking and the largest government-owned power generation equipment manufacturer.

Mandideep is a town with municipality in Goharganj sub-district of Raisen district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Mandideep is 23 km from Bhopal and is basically an Industrial township which came into existence in late 1970s. The Mandideep Municipality has population of 59,654 of which 32,390 are males while 27,264 are females as per report released by 2011 Census of India. Literacy rate of Mandideep city is 83.76 % higher than state average of 69.32 %. In Mandideep, Male literacy is around 89.33 % while female literacy rate is 77.04. Mandideep's annual productions are worth some Rs. 80,000 crore in 2021, making it one of the most productive economic centers in India.

Hazrat Nizamuddin–Rani Kamalapati Express is a daily Superfast train service, connecting Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, India and New Delhi. It has the distinction of being the fastest 'non-Shatabdi', 'non-Rajdhani' and 'non-Sampark Kranti' train in India. The Shaan–E–Bhopal Express is the prestigious, one of the "first" ISO 9002 certified train of India, having high security features and high priority on the Indian Railways. The train is known for its cleanliness and maintenance also defining mindset of Bhopal which itself is cleanest state capital in India.

Rail transport in Madhya Pradesh began in the year 1867 when Allahabad–Jabalpur branch line was opened in June 1867. The Etarsi to Jabalpur section was opened on 7 March 1870 by GIPR, linking up with EIR track at Jabalpur from Allahabad, and establishing connectivity between Mumbai and Kolkata. In 1903, with the introduction of Delhi-Chennai rail route through the state and Bhopal Junction railway station, the state got a good rail connectivity. Presently major portion of the state's rail connectivity is provided by the railway zone called West Central Railway.
