Habitat for Humanity Uganda is a Non-governmental organization in Uganda that seeks to provide safe and affordable accommodation housing for vulnerable communities. It partners with volunteers, families, local communities, and other national and international partners to build homes for people. [1] [2] [3] [4]

History

Habitat for Humanity Uganda was incepted in 1982 by Habitat for Humanity International which was founded in 1976 by Linda Faula with its headquarters in Geneva England. [1] Its objective is to fight housing poverty in Uganda through policy advocacy for reforms on the deconstruction of socio-economic, infrastructural, and structural barriers to access to decent shelter for underserved and marginalized communities. Projects

Home Equals:

The project was launched in 2023 in conjunction with the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development. It is a project with a focus on policy reforms, and support for the provision of equitable shelter to informal settlements like the Katanga slum, Kamokya, and Nsooba slums amongst some of the notorious slums found in Uganda. Urban Low-cost house:

The project was launched at Kyasira Home Of Hope, a home for children who were affected by the Lord's Resistance Army War (LRA) in northern Uganda that occurred 20 years ago and aimed to build houses for vulnerable people. In Kumi district, 45 houses were built for people including orphaned children, people living with HIV/AIDS, widowers, and widows. [2] [10] [3] [11]

Youth Vocational training programs: It offers vocational training programs including tailoring, and garment cutting to youths in vulnerable communities enabling them to earn incomes to support themselves and their families. [12]

Policy Advocacy Areas

The organization reawakens the Ugandan government to reform and re-assess its existing policies including the Uganda National Housing Policy reform, National Land Use Policy, and National Slum Upgrading Strategy and Action Plan to benefit underserved societies and also calls upon people to save money for building decent houses instead of renting expensive houses. They also focus research on inclusive land governance, leadership, and capacity-building programs for appropriate land use and distribution and protection of land rights. [1] [16] [17] [18]

The right to housing is the economic, social and cultural right to adequate housing and shelter. It is recognized in some national constitutions and in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The effects of climate change in Uganda are increasingly severe, affecting the lives of the country's citizens and its environment. It has led to extreme weather events such as unpredictable, prolonged drought and rainfall. Uganda's climate is mostly tropical with regular rainfall and sunshine patterns. Due to climate change the seasons have changed, with the rainy season becoming more variable in length and droughts more ubiquitous, especially in eastern and northeastern Uganda. Kungu Al-Mahadi Adam, is a Ugandan Journalist working with Next media and Radio 4.

Alice Komuhangi Khaukha is a Ugandan Lawyer and Judge that has made contributions to the Ugandan legal system. She has held various positions within the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and recently became a High Court Judge for international Crimes Division as the Focal Judge for SGBV.

Simon Peter Kinobe is a Ugandan lawyer and human rights activist. He is the chairperson NGO Board and a former president of Uganda Law Society, a position he served from 2018-2020.

World Vision Uganda is a Christian Non-Governmental Organization and a branch of World Vision International committed to addressing poverty through relief, development, and advocacy programs. It was started in Uganda in 1986 to offer relief, and resettlement packages as well as help reconstruct the districts in central Uganda affected by the Ugandan Bush War of 1981-1986.
