Hailey Benton Gates is an American model, actress, director, and journalist. She hosted the Viceland series States of Undress . [1]

Early life

Gates grew up in the Los Angeles area, where her family has resided for seven generations. [2] Gates's parents separated during her childhood. [3] Gates's maternal grandmother is screenwriter Joan Tewkesbury. [4] Her great grandfather was the first mayor of Santa Monica. [2]

In 2012, Gates graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in experimental theater from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. [4]

Career

The Paris Review

Upon her graduation from New York University in 2012, Gates began working as an editor and director of advertising at The Paris Review . She left the magazine in 2015. [5]

Modeling

Gates has starred in campaigns for Miu Miu (by Steve Meisel), Costume National, and Target. [6] [1] [7] She also appeared on the July/August 2011 cover of Jalouse magazine. [8] She is currently signed to M Model Management. [9]

Acting

Gates appeared in Ricki and the Flash as Emily in 2015. [2] She also co-wrote and produced A Space Program, a 2015 docudrama, with artist Tom Sachs. The film received a positive review from The New York Times . [10]

Gates hosted Viceland's States of Undress . [11] The investigative docu-series focuses on the political and social circumstances surrounding fashion weeks around the world. [3] The show's second season premiered on June 6, 2017. [12]

Gates had a small role as "drugged-out mother" in David Lynch's 2017 reboot of Twin Peaks on Showtime. [13] [14] In 2019, Gates appeared in the Safdie brothers' movie Uncut Gems . [15]

Directing

In January 2019, a short film directed by Gates and starring Alia Shawkat, Shako Mako, premiered in Los Angeles. The film was produced as part of Miu Miu's Women's Tales series of shorts directed by women. [16] In 2023, she directed a feature length film, Atropia with Alia Shawkat and Callum Turner among the cast. [17]

Personal life

As of May 2016, Gates resides on the Upper West Side of New York City. [6]

The Oranges is a 2011 American romantic comedy-drama directed by Julian Farino and starring Hugh Laurie, Leighton Meester, Catherine Keener, Oliver Platt, Allison Janney, Alia Shawkat, and Adam Brody. The film chronicles how two families deal with a scandal involving a married man and his friend's daughter. Set in The Oranges area of Essex County, New Jersey, The Oranges was primarily filmed in New Rochelle, New York. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2011, and was released in the United States on October 5, 2012, by ATO Pictures. The film received mostly negative reviews upon its release and criticism and attacks for its ageist themes and tropes.

Viceland is a brand used for television channels owned and programmed by Vice Media. The brand launched on February 29, 2016, with two cable channels in North America. The American version is a joint venture majority-owned by A&E Networks. A Canadian version operated as a Category A-licensed specialty channel majority-owned by Rogers Media; it was discontinued on March 31, 2018.
