Hakeem Ali Mohammad (1906-1988) was an Unani physician in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India.

Life

Hakeem Ali was born in Zaina Kadal, Jammu and Kashmir. His father was also an Unani physician. Hakeem Ali was the descendant of Hakeem Abdur Rehman, whose lineage comes from Sheikh Hamza. Originally belonging to the Hindu Kashmiri pandit Raina family, his ancestors were converted to Islam by Mir Syed Ali Hamadani.

Hakeem Ali was married to Sidiqa Begum. The couple had three sons and five daughters. His sons Hakeem Mohammad Tahir and Hakeem Manzoor were high ranking officers in Jammu and Kashmir state administration besides being prominent literary personalities.

Career

Hakeem Ali got his formal education from Molvi Mohammad Hassan Taqi among others. He got his Unani education from his father Hakeem Habib-Ullah. After completing formal education in Unani medicine, he began his practice initially in Zanina Kadal and later moved to Gojwara, where he lived for the rest of his life. During his lifetime he became president of the Jammu and Kashmir Tibiyya Conference a chapter of All India Tibbiya Conference and traveled extensively in his quest for spirituality. He was a practicing Sufi who maintained a low profile. He performed Hajj in 1975 and adopted a life of tarik thereafter. He was connected to famous Sufi saint of Kashmir Mirak Shah sahab of Shalimar. In his early days he was afsar-e-mohalla of his locality in Zaina Kadal and post 1947 was appointed Emergency officer (Halqa Kawdara) for some time during Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah's emergency administration, but his Sufi inclinations weaned him away from politics.

Death

Hakeem Ali died in Gojwara after a brief illness in February 1988. He was buried in his ancestral graveyard near the Bahu-Din Sahib shrine.

Syed Mohammed Yusuf Shah, commonly known as Syed Salahudeen, is the head of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, a pro-Pakistan Kashmiri separatist militant organisation operating in Kashmir. He also heads the United Jihad Council, a Pakistan-based conglomeration of jihadist militant groups sponsored by the ISI, with the goal of annexing Jammu and Kashmir to Pakistan. Salahuddin vowed to block any peaceful resolution to the Kashmir conflict, threatened to train more Kashmiri suicide bombers, and vowed to turn the Kashmir valley "into a graveyard for Indian forces."

Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad

Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad (1907–1972) was an Indian politician belonging to the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, who served as the Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 1953 to 1964. Bakshi was a member of the National Conference from its founding and rose to be the second in command to the principal leader Sheikh Abdullah. He served as the Deputy Prime Minister of the State of Jammu and Kashmir between 1947–1953, but disagreed with Abdullah's advocacy of independence for the state in 1953. He staged a 'coup' with the help of the Head of State Karan Singh, resulting in the dismissal and imprisonment of Sheikh Abdullah. Bakshi was the longest serving Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, whose rule saw the formulation of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir and a normalisation of relations of Jammu and Kashmir with the Indian government.

Hakeem Noor-ud-Din was a close companion of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the founder of the Ahmadiyya Movement, and was chosen as his first successor on 27 May 1908, a day after his death, becoming the first caliph and leader of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. He was a renowned physician, writer, theologian, and an expert in Arabic and Hebrew.

Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir Cadre-based socio-religio-political organisation in Jammu and Kashmir

The Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir or Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir (JIJK) is a cadre-based Soco-religious-political organization in Jammu and Kashmir, distinct from the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. The organisation's stated position on the Kashmir conflict is that Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory (Indian) and the issue must be sorted as per UN or through tripartite talks between India and Pakistan and the real representatives of Jammu and Kashmir. This organization was always against the exodus of Kashmiri pandits.

Ghulam Mohammad Shah or G.M. Shah was an Indian politician who was Chief Minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir from 2 July 1984 to 6 March 1986. He succeeded his brother-in-law Farooq Abdullah. Shah's father-in-law was Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, of which Shah was once a senior member. Shah died 6 January 2009 at the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar. He was 88.

Khwaja Mubarak Shah was a senior Jammu & Kashmir National Conference leader and former Member of The Indian Parliament (MP) from the North Kashmir constituency of Baramulla in the early 1980s and also served as a Deputy Minister in the 1952 Government of Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. He also served as Superintendent of Police from 1947 for a brief spell and was trained under Gen. Thimaih, and had given up the job to join politics after Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah was made as an interim Administrator to govern the State when its Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh was dethroned in 1947. He was jailed along with Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and remained in Jail from August 1953 to February 1963, when his father had died. Mubarak Shah polled an overwhelming 67.57% of votes in the Parliamentary Elections in 1980 as opposed to his closest opponent, Muzaffar Hussain Beg who polled 28.48% of total votes polled. He is the son of Khwaja Sikander Shah of Varmul and the Brother-in-Law of Ghulam Ahmad Ashai. He was succeeded as the MP from Baramulla by Saifuddin Soz, who went on to serve as the Union Minister for Water Resources in the first Manmohan Singh Administration.

Nyla Ali Khan

Dr. Nyla Ali Khan is a Visiting Professor at Rose State College, former lecturer at the University of Oklahoma, and former professor at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. She is the author of four books, including The Fiction of Nationality in an Era of Transnationalism and Islam, Women, and Violence in Kashmir: Between Indian and Pakistan, and several articles that focus heavily on the political issues and strife of her homeland, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Despite being the granddaughter of Sheikh Abdullah, Nyla Khan prefers not simply to live in his shadow but to "stand up for myself and be taken seriously ... express my anger without being labeled an 'Islamic militant' ... [and] legitimately question things I don't understand", as she stated in a 2010 interview related to the release of her second book.

The All Jammu and Kashmir Plebiscite Front, or Plebiscite Front, was a political party in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir that called for a "popular plebiscite" to decide if the state should remain part of India, join Pakistan or become independent. The patron of the party was Sheikh Abdullah, the former Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and chief of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, even though he never formally joined it.

Sheikh Abdullah, also known as Papa Mian, was an Indian educationalist, social reformer, lawyer, founder of Women's College, Aligarh and a member of the Executive Council of the Aligarh Muslim University who served to the post from 1920 to 1928. Later in 1902, he was appointed to the All India Muhammadan Educational Conference as a secretary for women's section. He is primarily known for his contribution to the Muslim women education during British India period.

Nund Rishi Kashmiri sufi saint and poet

Nund Rishi, also known as Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani and by the honorary title Alamdar-e-Kashmir, was a Kashmiri Sufi saint, mystic, poet and Islamic preacher. Nund Reshi was among the founders of the Rishi order, a Sufi tradition of the region. He was influenced by spiritual teachers and saints, including Hamza Makhdoom, Resh Mir Sàeb, and Shamas Faqir.

Elections for the Constituent Assembly of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir were held in September–October 1951. Sheikh Abdullah was appointed Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Following frictions with various groups, Abdullah was dismissed in August 1953 and imprisoned. Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad was appointed as the next Prime Minister.

Mohammad Ashraf Khan, chiefly known as Ashraf Sehrai, is a Kashmiri separatist leader and chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, a united political front formed during the Kashmir conflict. He was elected chairman through a first-ever election conducted in the history of Hurriyat when Syed Ali Shah Geelani relinquished office due to his deteriorating health.

Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali

Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali(Hindi:चौधरी जुल्फकार अली) is an Indian politician and former cabinet minister of Jammu and Kashmir. He is an Advocate by profession and was part of the 11th and 12th Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from Darhal constituency. He is commonly known as Sher e Pir Pangal in the area. He is a second generation politician whose father Chowdhary Mohmmad Hussain was renowned politician and statesman in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Zulfkar has also served as Cabinet Minister under the Chief Ministership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Mehbooba Mufti 2015 to 2018. He was associated with Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party and served as district chief of the party for district Rajouri 2003 to 2013,He also seved as Member of highest decision making body of the party (PAC). He has left PDP and become the founding member of Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. Presently Vice President of the party. Ali has been Honoured with Best Legislature 2012. He is one of the most educated politician in Jammu and Kashmir state. As a Cabinet Minister, Ali headed various portfolios. He is pioneer minister of Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Zulfkar also implemented national food security act (NFSA) in the state and launched food for poor scheme (MMSFES).
