On 20 February 2011, a state election was held in Hamburg, Germany, for the 20th legislative period of the Hamburg Parliament after World War II. The election is a result of the collapse of the coalition government led by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Green Alternative List (GAL). [1] The Hamburg Parliament was officially dissolved on December 15, 2010. [1] The Social Democratic Party (SPD) won an absolute majority after winning 62 seats. [2] Absolute majorities are considered rare in Germany. [3] The Free Democratic Party (FDP) re-entered parliament after failing to win any seats in the previous election. [2]
Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany with a population of over 1.8 million.

The Hamburg Parliament is the unicameral legislature of the German state of Hamburg according to the constitution of Hamburg. As of 2011 there were 121 members in the parliament, representing a relatively equal amount of constituencies. The parliament is situated in the city hall Hamburg Rathaus and part of the Government of Hamburg.

The relationship between the Christian Democratic Union and the Green Alternative List has been strained since the former Mayor Ole von Beust announced he was stepping down in July. [1] [5] Von Beust was a popular mayor and was seen as the guarantor for the coalition government. [5] The CDU/Green party coalition was the first coalition government between the two parties in Germany. [1] [6] Christoph Ahlhaus was chosen as the mayor. [1] Since Ahlhaus became mayor, there were many conflicts which were intensifying. [1] Ahlhaus had been critical of the GAL on several occasions. [7]
Carl-Friedrich Arp Ole Freiherr von Beust, generally called Ole von Beust, is a German politician who was First Mayor of Hamburg from 31 October 2001 to 25 August 2010, serving as President of the Bundesrat from 1 November 2007 on for one year. He was succeeded as mayor by Christoph Ahlhaus.

Post election analysis showed that the election result was strongly dominated by local issues (82% of voters according to Forschungsgruppe Wahlen). [10]
The number of elections in Hamburg varies. Hamburg has a state election every four years, the elections for the state parliament. There are also elections to the federal diet of Germany, the local elections of the diet of the boroughs (Bezirksversammlungen) and every five years to the European Parliament. All elections take place by universal adult suffrage and are regulated by law.

The 2011 Baden-Württemberg state election was held on 27 March 2011 to elect members to Baden-Württemberg's state diet, the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart. It was the 14th state election since the foundation of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. Prior to the election, Stefan Mappus of the Christian Democratic Union had led a coalition government between his party and the Free Democratic Party. His government was defeated in the election. Winfried Kretschmann is a German politician of the Alliance '90/Greens. He has been Minister President of the state of Baden-Württemberg since 12 May 2011. From 1 November 2012 until 31 October 2013 he was President of the Bundesrat and ex officio deputy to the President of Germany. He is the first member of the Greens to serve in these offices. Himself identifying as a green conservative, Kretschmann has been associated with both socially and economically liberal policies.

On 20 January 2013, the SPD and the Green party won the 2013 Lower Saxony state election by one seat. On 19 February 2013, he was elected Prime Minister of Lower Saxony with the votes of SPD and Alliance '90/The Greens. From 1 November 2013 until 31 October 2014 he was President of the Bundesrat and ex officio deputy to the President of Germany. In November 2017, he was again elected Prime Minister of Lower Saxony with the votes of SPD and CDU.
State elections were held in Saarland on 26 March 2017. All 51 seats in the Landtag of Saarland were up for election. The incumbent Minister-President Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer went into the election leading a grand coalition of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), seeking re-election after serving two terms as Minister-President.
