Hang On to Your Resistance is the debut album by Canadian musician Tom Cochrane, originally released in 1974 on Daffodil Records. The album was released under just his last name, Cochrane. In 1987, Capitol Records re-released the album under Tom Cochrane but changed the title slightly to Hang On to Your Resistance (The Early Years).

Neruda is the third studio album by the Canadian rock band Red Rider, released in 1983. The album was recorded at Metalworks Studios in Toronto, Ontario. The figure on the album cover was inspired by Denise Sexton. The instrumental track "Light In The Tunnel" followed by "Power" have been used to open Red Rider's concerts on several tours. Neruda became Red Rider's third straight platinum album in Canada, selling more than 100,000 copies, and peaking at number 11 on the charts.

Inspired by Cochrane's experiences during the years following the success of his album Mad Mad World, the song was released in 1995 as his first single since "Bigger Man" in 1992. It became only the second song—and the first by a Canadian artist—to debut atop the Canadian RPM 100 Hit Tracks chart, giving Cochrane his second number-one single in his home country, and it also reached number three on the RPM Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. Outside Canada, "I Wish You Well" experienced brief chart success in the United Kingdom and the United States.
