Hardcore Never Dies is a 2023 Dutch crime drama film directed by Jim Taihuttu. The film won the Golden Film award after having sold 100,000 tickets. [1] [2] The film takes place during the gabber music scene in Rotterdam, Netherlands in the 1990s. [2] [3]
The film follows brothers Michael, a gifted pianist working a manual labor job, and Danny, a gabber devotee and small-time drug dealer. [4] Danny introduces Michael to gabber while coming up with increasingly dangerous schemes to repay an escalating debt to a local drug lord.
Jim Deddes, Joes Brauers and Rosa Stil play roles in the film. [2] [5] Principal photography began early 2023. [6] [7]
The film's trailer features the track "Ruffneck (still) rules the Hardcore scene" by Juggernaut a.k.a. DJ Ruffneck (Patrick van Kerckhoven), which itself is a variation of Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King"; both songs interleave in the trailer.
Hardcore Never Dies is an original trademark and Record Label from Dance Concepts and they have approved the use of the name for this film. It's a brand name and music label of this event company with its own artists and merchandise.[ citation needed ]
Algemeen Dagblad (AD) rated the film four stars and praised Jim Deddes for his role in the film, as well as director Jim Taihuttu. [8] [9] NRC rated the film three stars. [9] Both AD and NRC described the crime plot as 'predictable'. [9] Trouw rated the film two stars and described the film's crime plot as clichéd. [9]
At the 2024 Netherlands Film Festival, the production team of Hardcore Never Dies won four Golden Calf awards: Gijs den Hartogh for Best Sound Design, Gino Taihuttu and Jiri Taihuttu for Best Music, Ben Zuydwijk for Best Production Design and Minke Lunter and John van Vlerken for Best Costume Design. Carice Anouk van Houten is a Dutch actress. Her first leading role in the television film Suzy Q (1999) won her the Golden Calf for Best Acting in a Television Drama; two years later, she won the Golden Calf for Best Actress for Miss Minoes (2001).

The character Olli was created in 2004 by Dutch designer and film director Hein Mevissen along with writer Diederiekje Bok as a character for a bottled mineral water. Olli was one of the many characters used on the packages and posters of the bottled water brand and John's Phone. Olli was launched at a party of MTV In Rotterdam in 2004. In 2013, Olli was again part of a campaign, this time to save the Rotterdam Zoo Diergaarde Blijdorp. Olli is part of the Ollimania family which is the company that created and owns all characters. After the launch, Olli became the symbol of Rotterdam and professional football club Feyenoord. On 10 September 2015, Ollimania and its creators Hein Mevissen and Diederiekje Bok donated a huge Olli statue to the Sophia children's hospital in Rotterdam.

The Energiehal was an events hall built in a park in west Rotterdam in 1955, for the E55 exhibition. It was then relocated to the Blijdorp district in north Rotterdam, being used for decades as a sports hall and for other events. In the 1990s, it became a rave venue and is famous in the history of gabber. It was demolished in 1999.

The film is a sequel to De Schippers van de Kameleon and Kameleon 2, being released 16 years after this last film. Director Steven de Jong returned for the sequel but the two main actors where re-cast. The film also has a significant role for Nando Liebrecht, an actor with Down syndrome. A reviewer for NRC Handelsblad called the main actors a sidecharacter in their own story.

The film premiered as the opening film of the Netherlands Film Festival before its nationwide theatrical release. The film was nominated for three Golden Calf awards, including Best Feature Film and Best Leading Role. Both Algemeen Dagblad and NRC praised the film.

It was chosen as the Dutch entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. The film won two Golden Calf awards for best feature film and best leading role for Leny Breederveld. The winners where announced at the Netherlands Film Festival.
