New Hanover County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census,the population was 225,702. Though the second-smallest county in North Carolina by land area,it is one of the most populous,as its county seat,Wilmington,is one of the state's largest communities. The county was created in 1729 as New Hanover Precinct and gained county status in 1739. New Hanover County is included in the Wilmington,NC Metropolitan Statistical Area,which also includes neighboring Pender and Brunswick counties.

Furnifold McLendel Simmons was an American politician who served as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from March 4,1887,to March 4,1889,and U.S. senator from the state of North Carolina between March 4,1901,and March 4,1931. He served as chairman of the powerful Committee on Finance from March 4,1913,to March 4,1919. He was an unsuccessful contender for the 1920 Democratic Party nomination for president. Simmons was a staunch segregationist and white supremacist,and a leading perpetrator of the Wilmington insurrection of 1898.
Alton Asa Lennon was an American Democratic politician who represented North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. He first served as an interim appointment to the Senate from 1953–1954,unsuccessfully sought re-election,and later represented the Cape Fear region in the House from 1957–1973. Lennon is one of very few former senators in modern times to serve in the House after leaving the Senate.
The Wilmington insurrection of 1898,also known as the Wilmington massacre of 1898 or the Wilmington coup of 1898,was a coup d'état and a massacre which was carried out by white supremacists in Wilmington,North Carolina,United States,on Thursday,November 10,1898. The white press in Wilmington originally described the event as a race riot caused by black people. Since the late 20th century and further study,the event has been characterized as a violent overthrow of a duly elected government by a group of white supremacists.
Robert Bower "Buzz" Peterson Jr. is an American basketball executive who is the assistant general manager for the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has also coached college basketball,most recently as the head coach of the UNC Wilmington Seahawks men's basketball team. He was fired by UNC Wilmington at the conclusion of the 2014 season. Peterson was the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers basketball team for four years before being fired in 2005. He previously coached a second stint at Appalachian State—he coached the 2009–10 Mountaineers,as well as the 1996 to 2000 squads. Previously,he was the men's basketball head coach at the University of Tulsa and at Coastal Carolina University,a position he held until mid-2007,when he left the program to be executive with the Charlotte Bobcats of the NBA.
