William Rufus DeVane King was an American politician and diplomat. He was the 13th vice president of the United States from March 4 until his death in April 1853. Earlier he had served as a U.S. representative from North Carolina and a senator from Alabama. He also served as minister to France under President James K. Polk.

He also served as collector of the port of Wilmington,inspector of posts along the eastern line of the southern coast during the Rutherford B. Hayes Administration,and special agent of the United States Treasury Department.
Furnifold McLendel Simmons was an American politician who served as a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from March 4,1887,to March 4,1889,and U.S. senator from the state of North Carolina between March 4,1901,and March 4,1931. He served as chairman of the powerful Committee on Finance from March 4,1913,to March 4,1919. He was an unsuccessful contender for the 1920 Democratic Party nomination for president. Simmons was a staunch segregationist and white supremacist,and a leading perpetrator of the Wilmington insurrection of 1898.
Alton Asa Lennon was an American Democratic politician who represented North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. He first served as an interim appointment to the Senate from 1953 to 1954,unsuccessfully sought re-election,and later represented the Cape Fear region in the House from 1957 to 1973. Lennon is one of very few former senators in modern times to serve in the House after leaving the Senate.
The Wilmington insurrection of 1898,also known as the Wilmington massacre of 1898 or the Wilmington coup of 1898,was a municipal-level coup d'état and a massacre that was carried out by white supremacists in Wilmington,North Carolina,United States,on Thursday,November 10,1898. The white press in Wilmington originally described the event as a race riot perpetrated by a mob of black people. In later study from the 20th century onward,the event has been characterized as a violent overthrow of a duly elected government by white supremacists.
Robert Bower "Buzz" Peterson Jr. is an American basketball executive who is the assistant general manager for the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has also coached college basketball,most recently as the head coach of the UNC Wilmington Seahawks men's basketball team. He was fired by UNC Wilmington at the conclusion of the 2014 season. Peterson was the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers basketball team for four years before being fired in 2005. He previously coached a second stint at Appalachian State—he coached the 2009–10 Mountaineers,as well as the 1996 to 2000 squads. Previously,he was the men's basketball head coach at the University of Tulsa and at Coastal Carolina University,a position he held until mid-2007,when he left the program to be executive with the Charlotte Bobcats of the NBA.
