Harshana Thilakarathne (born 2003) is a Sri Lankan chess player and International Master. [1] He is currently the no 2 chess player in Sri Lanka. He completed his education at the Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala. [2] He is trained by Dmytro Komarow. [3] He started training in the game under the coaching of former veteran national chess player Romesh Weerawardane. [4]

Career

Harshana claimed a bronze medal in the Under 7 age category at the 2009 Asian Schools Chess Championship which was held in Sri Lanka. [5] He also claimed gold medal in Under 11 age category at the 2014 World Schools Chess Championship which was held in Brazil. [6] He was awarded the Candidate Master title in 2015. He claimed silver medal in Under 13 category at the 2016 World Schools Chess Championship which was held in Sochi, Russia. He also won silver medal in Under 15 category at the 2018 World Schools Chess Championship which was held in Albania. [7] He also won gold medal in Under 16 open category at the 2018 Commonwealth Chess Championship which was held in New Delhi. [6] [8] In the same year, he was awarded the FIDE master title. He also competed at the 43rd Chess Olympiad which was held in Georgia in 2018 where he scored 6 points from 10 matches. [9]

He won his first national chess championship title at the age of 16 in 2019. [10] [11] He also secured silver medal in the Under 18 open event at the 2019 West Asian Youth Chess Championship which was held in New Delhi. [12] He captained the 12 member Sri Lankan contingent in the FIDE Online Chess Olympiad 2020. [13] [14] [15] He was also selected to play in the Online Intercontinental Youth Chess Cup 2020 representing the Asuan Youth Chess team. [16] He also captained the Sri Lankan boys team at the 2020 Asian Boys and Girls Online Chess Championship in their Zonal 3.2 category where boys team secured third position and it was also the inaugural online edition of the Asian Boys and Girls tournament. [17]

In October 2020, he was awarded the prestigious International Master title by the World Chess Federation and became the second Sri Lankan to be awarded the international master title after Romesh Weerawardane. [16] He received the title after securing three norms with the required rating of 2400. [16]

In September 2021, he won the Under 18 category of the 2021 Western Asian Online Youth Chess Championships and his victory also guaranteed his eligibility to compete in the FIDE World Youth and Cadet Chess Grand Prix 2021. [18] [19]

Up to date, she remains as the only chess player to have won a gold medal at a World Chess Olympiad for Sri Lanka. She has also won the Sri Lankan Women's National Chess Championship title ten times. She is well known for her efforts in developing the game of chess across the country.

Herath Mudiyansalage Dinesh Priyantha, also simply known as Dinesh Priyantha, is a Sri Lankan Paralympic track and field athlete who competes in javelin T46 events. He also served as an important member for the Sri Lanka Army during the Sri Lankan Civil War. He was disabled after being shot at his left arm during the final stages of the war. He is the defending Paralympic champion in men's javelin throw F46 category. On 30 August 2021, he became the first ever Sri Lankan to win a gold medal at the Paralympics when he won the men's javelin throw F46 category. Romesh Weerawardane is a Sri Lankan chess player. Weerawardane was the first Sri Lankan to be an International Master. Weerawardane competed in two Chess Olympiads in 2010 and 2016, scoring 2/6 and 2.5/10 respectively. He serves as a FIDE Instructor.

Kotambewaththe Gedara Dilshi Maheesha Shyamali Kumarasingha also simply known as K. G. D. M. S. Kumarasinghe or Dilshi Kumarasinghe aka Shyamali Kumarasinghe is a Sri Lankan track and field athlete and a national record holder in women's 800m. She is currently coached by Susantha Fernando.

Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage also simply known as Ranindu Liyanage is a Sri Lankan chess player and current national champion. In July 2021, he became the first Sri Lankan man to participate at the FIDE Chess World Cup. He is currently coached by Uzbekistani chess grandmaster Alexei Barsov.

Susal Thewjan de Silva is a Sri Lankan chess International Master (2022), three times Sri Lankan Chess Championship winner.

Nuwan Indika Gamage also spelt as Nuwandika Indika is a Sri Lankan para sprinter and long jumper. He served in the Sri Lanka Light Infantry which is considered as the oldest regiment in the Sri Lanka Army.

Mohomed Shamil Mukthar Wakeel is a Sri Lankan professional squash player. He is also employed at Brandix. He studied at the D. S. Senanayake College.

Veera Samiyel Chanithma Sinaly is a Sri Lankan professional squash player. She is also the current national champion in women's singles in the sport of squash. She achieved her highest career PSA world rankings of 161 in November 2023.
