Maliyadeva College is a national school controlled by the Sri Lankan central government. It is located in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka, and was established in 1888 by the Buddhist Theosophical Society, led by Colonel Henry Steel Olcott. It is one of Sri Lanka's oldest schools. Today, the school accommodates 5,000 students. The term "Devans" is used to refer to the former and present pupils of Maliyadeva College.

Bars could be awarded for further acts of gallantry meriting the award for a second and third time, denoted by a star in the ribbon bar for each additional award.

Field Marshal Gardihewa Sarath Chandralal Fonseka is a retired Sri Lankan army officer. He was the eighteenth Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, and under his command the Sri Lankan Army ended the 26-year Sri Lankan Civil War in 2009, defeating the militant group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam; he thereafter briefly served as the Chief of Defence Staff. After retiring from the Army with the rank of General, he entered politics as the common opposition candidate in the 2010 presidential election contesting against President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Sri Lanka Military Academy, commonly known simply as Diyatalawa, is the oldest military academy in Sri Lanka, and trains commissioned officers for the Sri Lanka Army. It is located in the garrison town of Diyatalawa in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It has capacity to train more than 300 cadets.

Operation Balavegaya was a combined military operation launched by the Sri Lankan military in Jaffna, the largest amphibious assault in its history. Operation Balavegaya was launched in response to the siege of Elephant Pass by the LTTE. It is believed that Operation Balavegaya was the largest and most successful military operation of the Sri Lankan military until Operation Riviresa in 1995.

A mass murder of Police officers took place on 11 June 1990. Ranasinghe Arachchige Nimal Gamini Amaratunga is a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. He was appointed in January 2005. Amaratunga completed his primary education from Maliyadeva College in Kurunegala. Thereafter, Amaratunga attended University of Colombo obtaining a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) in 1970. In October 1972 he was called to the Bar. He joined the Attorney General's Department in 1978 as an Acting State Counsel was appointed a State Counsel on 1 June 1979. Whilst still at the Attorney General's Department, in 1984, he obtained the Post Graduate Degree of Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Colombo. Amaratunga has also obtained a second Post Graduate degree of 'Master of Laws' from the International Maritime Law Institute in Malta, in 1990. He was promoted to Senior State Counsel on 8 September 1988.
