Punchi Banda Jayasundara is a Sri Lankan economist. He was the former Secretary to the President,Gotabaya Rajapaksa and former Secretary of the Treasury on multiple occasions. [1] [2]
He was a past pupil of Maliyadeva College in Kurunegala and Jayasundera was graduated from University of Sri Lanka,Colombo in 1973 with a BA in Economics,he also gained Masters in Development Economics from Williams College in 1980 and a PhD in economics from Boston University in 1984. [2]
He joined the Central Bank of Sri Lanka as an economist in 1974 and was later promoted to the senior economist in the 1980s following his postgraduate studies in the United States.
In 1990,he was seconded to the Treasury (Ministry of Finance) as an Economic Advisor in 1990 on secondment. In 1995 he was appointed as Director-General,Department of Fiscal Policy and Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance and from 1997 to 1999 he served as the Deputy Secretary to the Treasury. He served as Secretary to the Treasury and the Ministry of Finance from 1999 to 2001,during which Sri Lanka experienced its first recession since gaining its independence in 1948. [3] He then served as chairman,Public Enterprises Reform Commission,Senior Policy Advisor,Ernst &Young Sri Lanka,and as a consultant to the IMF and the World Bank in Sri Lankan assignments. Jayasundera was reappointed as Secretary to the Treasury and Ministry of Finance in 2004. [2] [4]
In 2008,he was found guilty by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka of a violation of procedure in the awarding of a large contract for the expansion of the Port of Colombo. The court barred him from holding any public office. As a result,he resigned from all public offices he held at the time.
In 2009,on invitation by then President Mahinda Rajapaksa to P.B. Jayasundera to once again take up the post of treasury secretary,he submitted a fundamental rights petition protesting the original decision to the Supreme Court,which was heard by the newly appointed Chief Judge who overturned the previous decision and allowed Jayasundera to be reinstated as secretary of the treasury. On the day before the 2015 presidential election,at which Mahinda Rajapaksa was defeated,Jayasundera left the country to Singapore. [6] He was replaced the day after the election by Dr. R H S Samaratunga as secretary of the treasury.
Following the election of Mahinda Rajapaksa's brother President Gotabaya Rajapaksa,Jayasundera was appointed Secretary to the President on 19 November 2019. [7] He gave his resignation in December 2021,and was asked to leave on 15 January 2022 by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa following a long dispute between Jayasundera and the Cabinet of Ministers,who disliked his level of power and influence,with the ministers blaming Jayasundera over the 2019–present Sri Lankan economic crisis. [8] He along with former Treasury Secretary Attigala and former CBSL Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal were later accused by Finance Minister Ali Sabry of preventing the Sri Lankan Government from approaching the IMF for a bailout in favor of a home grown solution which ultimately forced Sri Lanka into a preemptive sovereign default. Sri Lanka is a semi-presidential representative democratic republic,whereby the President of Sri Lanka is both head of state and head of government,and it relies on a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet of Ministers. Legislative power is vested in the Parliament. For decades,the party system was dominated by the socialist Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the conservative United National Party. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.

Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa is a former Sri Lankan politician and military officer,who served as the eighth President of Sri Lanka from 18 November 2019 until his resignation on 13 July 2022 due to months of public anger. He previously served as Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development from 2005 to 2015 under the administration of his elder brother former President Mahinda Rajapaksa,during the final phase of the Sri Lankan Civil War.

He served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka,holding the post from 1 July 2006 until his resignation on 9 January 2015. He again became the Governor of Central Bank of Sri Lanka in September 2021,replacing W. D. Lakshman,and resigned again in April 2022.

The extended Rajapaksa family is believed to have amassed a large amount of wealth and while the amount of and scale is unknown several members of the family have been revealed in international investigations such as the Pandora Papers to be using networks of shell companies and trusts to hide their wealth in offshore tax havens which has led to accusations of Rajapaksas turning Sri Lanka into a Kleptocracy

The Sri Lanka People's Front,commonly known by its Sinhalese name Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP),is a political party in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan economic crisis is an ongoing crisis in the island country of Sri Lanka that started in 2019. It is the country's worst economic crisis since its independence in 1948. It has led to unprecedented levels of inflation,near-depletion of foreign exchange reserves,shortages of medical supplies,and an increase in prices of basic commodities. The crisis is said to have begun due to multiple compounding factors like tax cuts,money creation,a nationwide policy to shift to organic or biological farming,the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter bombings,and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka. The subsequent economic hardships resulted in the 2022 Sri Lankan protests.
The 2022 Sri Lankan protests were a series of mass protests that began in March 2022 against the government of Sri Lanka. The government was heavily criticized for mismanaging the Sri Lankan economy,which led to a subsequent economic crisis involving severe inflation,daily blackouts,and a shortage of fuel,domestic gas,and other essential goods. The protesters' main demand was the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and key officials from the Rajapaksa family. P. Nandalal Weerasinghe is a Sri Lankan economist and banker who is also currently serving as the 17th Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. A career officer in the Central Bank of Sri Lanka,serving as its chief economist and senior deputy governor. He has also served as an alternative executive director at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC representing the countries such as Sri Lanka,Bhutan,India and Bangladesh from January 2010 to August 2012. He has also previously acted as a chairman of the monetary policy committee and foreign reserve management committee of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The Uttara Lanka Sabhagaya or Supreme Lanka Coalition is a political alliance in Sri Lanka formed in 2022. The coalition is made up of seven Sri Lankan leftist and nationalist parties who were formerly part of the SLPP-led Sri Lanka People's Freedom Alliance,before defecting to the opposition amidst the 2022 economic crisis and political crisis. The first conference of the alliance was held on 4 September,2022. Leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) and former cabinet minister Wimal Weerawansa is the chairman of the Supreme Lanka Coalition. The alliance has 15 seats in the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
The Freedom People's Alliance is a political alliance in Sri Lanka founded in 2023 to contest in the upcoming local elections. The alliance consists of 12 political parties,including the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SFLP),the Uttara Lanka Sabhagaya and the Freedom People's Congress.
