Harun Izhar [1] is a Bangladeshi Deobandi Islamic scholar, writer and religious personality. He is the former education, culture secretary and central leader of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh. [2] [3] And Assistant Director of Jamiatul Uloom Al-Islamia Lalkhan Bazar. He is the son of Izharul Islam Chowdhury, president of Nizam-e-Islam Party and former influential leader of Hefazet Islam. He is the son of Nizam-e-Islam Party President Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury. [5] And he has a younger brother Musa Bin Izhar. [6] He studied at Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam in Chittagong and now currently he is the Assistant Director of Jamiatul Uloom Al-Islamia Lalkhan Bazar Madrasa in Chittagong. [7]
In 2009, Izhar and two alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives were arrested in Chittagong while planning an attack on the Indian High Commission and US Embassy. [8]
On July 10, 2013, Izhar was arrested for alleged connection with the grenade attack in Chittagong's Lalkhan Bazar Madrasa. [9] Another case was filed over the recovery of picric acid from the Madrasa. [10] He was in prison for a long time. Later he was released. [11]
In 2021, Izhar was arrested by RAB from Chittagong's Lalkhan Bazar Madrasa on the night of April 28 that year on the charge of directly supporting the sabotage that took place in different parts of the country around the issue of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in Bangladesh to celebrate Bangladeshi independence. [12] Later, he was released from Chittagong Central Jail on Monday night, May 22, 2023. [13]
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government, Izhar filed a case with the International Crimes Tribunal over the police crackdown on the 2013 Shapla Square protests. [14] He named 23 accused including Sheikh Hasina and Shahriar Kabir. [14]
As Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, Izhar led a march of the organization to the Indian High Commission. [15]
