Mufti Harun Bin Izhar, popularly known as Mufti Harun Izhar [1] is a Bangladeshi Deobandi islamic scholar, politician, writer and religious personality. He is the former education, culture secretary and central leader of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh. [2] And Assistant Director of Jamiatul Uloom Al-Islamia Lalkhan Bazar. He is the son of Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury, president of Nizam-e-Islam Party and former influential leader of Hefazet Islam. [3]

Personal life

He is the elder son of Nizam-e-Islam Party President Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury. [4] And he has a younger brother Musa Bin Izhar. [5]

Education

He studied at Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam in Chittagong and now currently he is the Assistant Director of Jamiatul Uloom Al-Islamia Lalkhan Bazar Madrasa in Chittagong. [6]

Arrest

In 2009, Izhar and two Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives were arrested in Chittagong while planning an attack on the Indian High Commission and US Embassy. [7]

On July 10, 2013, Harun Izhar was arrested in connection with the horrific grenade blast in Chittagong's Lalkhan Bazar Madrasa. He was in prison for a long time. Later he was released. [8]

In 2021, he was arrested by RAB from Chittagong's Lalkhan Bazar Madrasa on the night of April 28 that year on the charge of directly supporting the sabotage that took place in different parts of the country around the issue of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in Bangladesh to celebrate Bangladeshi independence. Later, he was released from Chittagong Central Jail on Monday night, May 22, 2023. [9]

It was established in 1938 by Azizul Haq under the direction of Zamiruddin Ahmad. It is also known as an International Islamic University. It has a role in the promotion of Islam in Bangladesh, inclusion of Qawmi Madrasas under one syllabus, providing modern and higher education for scholars.

Wifaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh is the largest Qawmi madrasa education board in Bangladesh. it was founded in April, 1978 after a seminar of Islamic scholars. This organization of Qawmi Madrasas of Bangladesh is also known as the "Wifaqul Madaris". It is an extension of the process that formed the Wafaq ul Madaris Al-Arabia, Pakistan in 1957. "Bangladesh Qawmi Madrasah Education Board" is the largest federation of Islamic seminaries in Bangladesh. Qawmi educational system practices originate from the traditional Muslim educational system of Bangladesh. At present, there are more than 65,000 Qawmi Madrasahs in Bangladesh. As of 2013, more than 20,000 Seminaries across the People's Republic of Bangladesh are affiliated with "Befaqul Madaris". It controls all the seminaries which are run by Deobandi School of thought. Deobandi School of thought is supposed to be the most powerful and dominated school of thought in Bangladesh.

Jamiatul Uloom Al-Islamia Lalkhan Bazar, popularly known as Lalkhan Bazar Madrasa, is a Qawmi madrasah situated in the Lalkhan Bazar area of port city Chittagong. The jamia is founded by Mufti Izharul Islam. His elder son Mufti Harun Izhar is the assistant director of the jamia.

He was an early student of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam in Hathazari. Hasan established Al Jameatul Arabiatul Islamia Jiri, which was the second Qawmi madrasa of Bangladesh.

Ashraf Ali Bishwanathi (1928–2005) was a Bangladeshi Deobandi Islamic scholar, educator, politician and religious writer. He was called "Baba-e Jamiat" in order to lay the foundation of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh in East Pakistan and present day Bangladesh. He was also the president of the party for 2001 to 2005. He was also the founder of Jamia Islamia Darul Uloom Madania Bishwanath, Madania Qawmia Mahila Madrasa and the literary magazine Monthly Al Farooq.

Shah Sultan Ahmad Nanupuri, also known by his daak naam Badshah, was a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, teacher and author. He established numerous madrasas in Bangladesh and was the founding principal of Al-Jamiah Al-Islamiah Obaidia Nanupur for seventeen years.
