Hassan Ugail (born 24 September 1970) is a Maldivian mathematician and computer scientist. He is a professor of visual computing at the Faculty of Engineering and Informatics at the University of Bradford. [1]
Hassan Ugail was born in Hithadhoo, Addu City, in Seenu Atoll, Maldives. [2] In 1987, he moved to Malé to continue his education at the English Preparatory And Secondary School and at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education. In 1992, he received a British Council scholarship to continue his studies in the UK. [3] Ugail received a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics in 1995 and a postgraduate certificate in 1996, both from King's College London. He earned his PhD in Visual Computing at the University of Leeds in 1999. [4] His doctoral research focused on the application of partial Ddfferential equations in interactive surface design. [5]
After completing his PhD, Ugail worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Department of Applied Mathematics at University of Leeds until September 2002. He then became a lecturer at the School of Informatics at the University of Bradford. He was appointed as a senior lecturer in April 2005, and became a professor in 2009. [1] In 2010, Ugail received the Vice-Chancellor's Excellence in Knowledge Transfer Award from the University of Bradford. [6] In 2011, Ugail received the Maldives National Award for Innovation for his work in the field of visual computing. [7] Ugail is the director of the Centre for Visual Computing at the University of Bradford. [8]
Ugail is known for his work on computer-based human face analysis including facial recognition, [9] face ageing, [10] [11] emotion analysis [12] and lie detection. [13] In 2018, Ugail worked with Bellingcat journalists to verify the identities of two suspected Russian spies involved in the Salisbury Novichok poisoning case. [14] [15] [16] In 2019, he helped the Commission on Deaths and Disappearances to investigate cold cases such as Ahmed Rilwan, Yameen Rasheed and Afrasheem Ali via his lie detection services as well as his face-recognition system. [17] [18] In 2020, BBC News investigators consulted Ugail as an expert in facial mapping to identify an alleged Nazi war criminal. [19] As of 2023 [update] , Ugail's team is working on image analysis as part of a project to assess the quality of human organs for transplant. The project is supported by NHS Blood and Transplant, Quality in Organ Donation biobank, and the National Institute for Health and Care Research. [8]

He is a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Computer Science in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of Tennessee. He holds the position of a Distinguished Research Staff member in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Turing Fellowship in the School of Mathematics at the University of Manchester, and is an adjunct professor and teacher in the Computer Science Department at Rice University. He served as a faculty fellow at the Texas A&M University Institute for Advanced Study (2014–2018). Dongarra is the founding director of the Innovative Computing Laboratory at the University of Tennessee. He was the recipient of the Turing Award in 2021.
Sir Roy Yorke Calne was a British surgeon and pioneer in organ transplantation. He was part of the team that performed the first liver transplantation operation in Europe in 1968, the world's first liver, heart and lung transplantation in 1987, the first intestinal transplant in the UK in 1992 and the first successful combined stomach, intestine, pancreas, liver and kidney cluster transplantation in 1994.
John Gustav Daugman was a British-American professor of computer vision and pattern recognition at the University of Cambridge. His major research contributions have been in computational neuroscience, pattern recognition, and in computer vision with the original development of wavelet methods for image encoding and analysis. He invented the IrisCode, a 2D Gabor wavelet-based iris recognition algorithm that is the basis of all publicly deployed automatic iris recognition systems and which has registered more than 1.5 billion persons worldwide in government ID programs.

Bellingcat is a Netherlands-based investigative journalism group that specialises in fact-checking and open-source intelligence (OSINT). Allegations of forced organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners and other political prisoners in China have raised concern within the international community. According to a report by former lawmaker David Kilgour, human rights lawyer David Matas, and journalist Ethan Gutmann of the US government-affiliated Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, political prisoners, mainly Falun Gong practitioners, are being executed "on-demand" in order to provide organs for transplant to recipients. Reports have said that organ harvesting has been used to advance the Chinese Communist Party's persecution of Falun Gong and because of the financial incentives available to the institutions and individuals involved in the trade. A report by The Washington Post has disputed some of the allegations, saying that China does not import sufficient quantities of immunosuppressant drugs, used by transplant recipients, to carry out such quantities of organ harvesting. However, the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation alleged that the Post's article made an “elementary statistical error” and omitted unofficial pharmacy data in Chinese hospitals.
Emotion recognition is the process of identifying human emotion. People vary widely in their accuracy at recognizing the emotions of others. Use of technology to help people with emotion recognition is a relatively nascent research area. Generally, the technology works best if it uses multiple modalities in context. To date, the most work has been conducted on automating the recognition of facial expressions from video, spoken expressions from audio, written expressions from text, and physiology as measured by wearables.
Hanspeter Pfister is a Swiss computer scientist. He is the An Wang Professor of Computer Science at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and an affiliate faculty member of the Center for Brain Science at Harvard University. His research in visual computing lies at the intersection of scientific visualization, information visualization, computer graphics, and computer vision and spans a wide range of topics, including biomedical image analysis and visualization, image and video analysis, and visual analytics in data science.
