Hastings Elwin

Hastings Elwin KC (1776 – 31 August 1852) was an English-born Australian politician.

He was the son of Hastings Elwin and Elizabeth Diana Woolhead. A minor aristocrat, he was lord of the manor of Booton in Norfolk, and his friends included the Marquess of Lansdowne and the poet Thomas Moore. He was a founding member of the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution and a member of the Anacreontic Society. He was a barrister, and spent time in Antigua as advocate general. In 1803 he married Margaret Matilda Ottley; she died in 1826 and he remarried Mary Anne Cole in 1829. Having moved to New South Wales, he was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1843 to 1844, during which time he was also Chairman of Committees. Elwin died at Camperdown in 1852.^[1]

In English and Irish history, the lordship of a manor is a lordship emanating from the feudal system of manorialism. In modern England and Wales, it is recognised as a form of property, one of three elements of a manor that may exist separately or be combined, and may be held in moieties:

the title ;
the manorial, comprising the manor and/or its land; and
the seignory, rights granted to the titular holder of the manor.

Booton is a village and civil parish in the Broadland district of Norfolk, England, just east of Reepham and seven miles west of Aylsham. According to the 2001 census, it had a population of 100, including Brandiston and increasing to 196 at the 2011 Census.

Of the county's population, 40% live in four major built up areas: Norwich (213,000), Great Yarmouth (63,000), King's Lynn (46,000) and Thetford (25,000).

Hastings was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales from 1859 to 1880. It was replaced by Hastings and Manning from 1880 to 1894, which elected two members with voters casting two votes and the two leading candidates being elected. In 1894 it was divided between the single-member electoral district of Hastings and Macleay and Manning. In 1920 proportional representation was introduced and Hastings and Macleay was absorbed into the new four-member district of Oxley. The electorate was named after the Hastings, the alluvial valleys of which contained most of its population.

This is a list of members of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1869 to 1872. Elections for the sixth Legislative Assembly were held between 3 December 1869 and 10 January 1870 with parliament first meeting on 27 January 1870. There were 72 members elected for 52 single member electorates, 6 two member electorates and 2 four member electorates. Due to a change in the Constitution of New South Wales the maximum term of this parliament was reduced from 5 years to 3. However the assembly was dissolved after only 25 months after the third government of James Martin lost a vote of supply.
