The Hawthorne Juvenile Stakes was an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually from 1927 through 1999 at Hawthorne Race Course in Stickney/Cicero, Illinois. The race was open to two-year-old horses and was last contested on dirt at a distance of a mile and a sixteenth (8.5 furlongs).

Contents

The inaugural edition took place on August 27, 1927, as the Chicago Juvenile Handicap at a distance of six furlongs on dirt. It was won by John W. Marchbank's filly, May Cooper. [1]

The race in 1999 was supplanted by the Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity, a race open to Illinois-bred two-year-old colts and geldings.

In 1958, the filly Indian Maid defeated her male counterparts to win the Hawthorne Juvenile.

The race has produced three horses that went on to win the second leg of the U.S. Triple Crown series. Head Play accomplished the feat in 1932–33, Bee Bee Bee in 1971–72, and Elocutionist did it in 1975–76. In each case, the horse won only the Preakness Stakes.

Untapable is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed promise as a two-year-old in 2013 when she won two of her four races including the Pocahontas Stakes and was placed in the Starlet Stakes. In 2014 she emerged as a top-class racehorse, winning the Rachel Alexandra Stakes, Fair Grounds Oaks, Kentucky Oaks, Mother Goose Stakes, Cotillion Handicap and Breeders' Cup Distaff and was named American Champion Three-Year-Old Filly.

Work All Week is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. A specialist sprinter bred in Illinois, he has won twelve of his fifteen races. He has spent most of his career racing in the Mid-West winning races such as the Tex's Zing Stakes, Lightning Jet Handicap, Hot Springs Stakes and Iowa Sprint Handicap. In the autumn of 2014 he was moved up in class and won the Phoenix Stakes at Keenland and followed up with an upset win over a strong field in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. In a racing career which lasted from April 1978 until August 1980, she won eleven of her twenty-four races, finished second three times and third on four occasions. As a two-year-old she won two minor races from her first four starts but then emerged as arguably the best British filly with five consecutive wins in the Cherry Hinton Stakes, Princess Margaret Stakes, Lowther Stakes, Flying Childers Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes. At three she was mainly campaigned over sprint races: she won the Gus Demmy Stakes at Haydock Park and was placed in the Nell Gwyn Stakes, King George Stakes, Goldene Peitsche and Haydock Sprint Cup. The Troy Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three years old and older over the distance of 5+12 furlongs on the turf scheduled annually in August at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. The event currently carries a purse of $300,000.
