Hayde Bluegrass Orchestra is an internationally-touring English-language bluegrass ensemble from Oslo, Norway, who have been nominated for a Norwegian grammy, and featured as international showcase artists. [1] [2] [3]

Origin and influences

Hayde Bluegrass Orchestra performs with eight band members in the genres of folk, Americana, and bluegrass. [4] [5] The founding members were Joakim Borgen and Rebekka Nilsson, [4] and the group's formation was inspired by the Belgian Oscar-nominated movie, The Broken Circle Breakdown. [4] According to Lee Zimmerman of the website, Bluegrass Today:

"Ironically, the duo found certainly [sic] similarities between bluegrass and Norway’s native folk traditions, especially those sounds that connect them by way of British folk music and the traditional hymns. 'The fiddle — or more precisely the Hardanger fiddle, a Norwegian version that includes a double set of resonating strings — is very central to Norwegian folk music, along with a number of other harp-like string instruments,' Borgen explains." [4]

John Lawless wrote of their Migrants album that the band often performs original compositions which blend "Appalachian and Nordic folk influences." [6]

Arild Rønsen of Puls music magazine wrote of the band, "It is almost impossible to be more American than the Hayde Bluegrass Orchestra" and that they are among the first Norwegian artists to enter the Billboard bluegrass chart. [7] [8]

Awards and honors

The band's album, Migrants, debuted at number four on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart on March 27, 2021. [9]

Hayde Bluegrass Orchestra's 2021 album, Migrants, was nominated for a Norwegian grammy (also called a Spellemannprisen). [1] In 2022, the band was an official showcase artist of the Folk Alliance International. [2]

In 2022, the group was nominated for Band of the Year for the 2022 IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Awards) Momentum Award. [3]

Appearance in film and media

The group spent five years in the development of their first album, and have produced numerous videos on YouTube, including a full-length concert in 2018. [4] [10] Their 2015 music video of the American folk song, Wayfaring Stranger, had registered over five million views on Youtube as of January, 2024. [11]

The band's cover of the Everly Brothers' All I Have to Do is Dream, was featured in the Netflix animation, Lost Ollie. [12] [13] [14] [15]

The Seldom Scene is an American bluegrass band that formed in 1971 in Bethesda, Maryland. The band's original line-up comprised John Starling on lead vocals and guitar, Mike Auldridge on Dobro and baritone vocals, Ben Eldridge on banjo, Tom Gray on double bass, and John Duffey on mandolin; the latter three also provided backing vocals. Together they released their debut studio album, Act I, in 1972, followed by both Act II and Act III in 1973.

The band was originally formed in high school by Kenny Feinstein and his neighbor, Josh Rabie (fiddle). They put out one album under the name Water Tower String Band and two albums as The Water Tower Bucket Boys, with various line ups, before changing their name to Water Tower in 2011. Rabie left the band in 2013 and Feinstein spent a year recording and putting out a solo album, an acoustic cover of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless called Loveless: Hurts to Love.


Rebekka Karijord, born 1976 in Sandnessjøen, is a Norwegian born, Stockholm, Sweden-based musician and composer. Karijord holds a degree from the Stockholm University of the Arts, where she honed her voice as an actor, playwright and musician. Over the course of her career she has composed music for over 30 films, modern dance performances and theatrical pieces, as well as released six solo albums under her own name. Karijord recorded the solo record The Noble Art of Letting Go in 2009. It was released in Scandinavia in the Fall of 2009 and Europe in 2010. There were also song placements on BBC and ABC Television, and the world touring nouveau cirque Cirkus Cirkör performance Wear it Like a Crown being based upon Karijord's song of the same title.

Balsam Range is an American bluegrass and acoustic music group founded in 2007 in Haywood County, North Carolina. They are 2014 and 2018 International Bluegrass Music Association (IMBA) Entertainer of the Year award recipients. Their other accolades include IBMA Vocal Group of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. Balsam Range consists of its original five members—Buddy Melton on fiddle and lead vocals; Darren Nicholson on mandolin and vocals; Tim Surrett on upright bass, resonator guitar, and vocals; Caleb Smith on guitar and vocals; and Marc Pruett on banjo.
